Graduate transfer wide receiver already making big impression at Alabama

Calvin Ridley is obvious, a returning star and essentially a lock to be one of Alabama's starting wide receivers.

The other two starting receivers? There is a growing feeling internally that at least one of them will be a newcomer who has quickly made an impression since arriving at Alabama in May.

The Tide's receiver group is arguably the deepest and most talented in the country, and there are other talented, proven difference-makers back from last year's team even aside from Ridley. However, it's looking more and more like graduate transfer Gehrig Dieter is going to be a big part of Alabama's offense.

The transfer from Bowling Green has been so impressive during summer workouts that at least some inside the Tide program believe he will start at one of Alabama's outside receiver spots over either Robert Foster or ArDarius Stewart.

"I think he's a great receiver," Tide tight end O.J. Howard said. "Hands. He has those. He rarely drops the ball. Great routes. He's smart. You can tell he's a veteran guy. Looking forward to him being very helpful for us on our offense this year."

One of the misconceptions outside Alabama's program is that Dieter was brought in to replace Richard Mullaney as the Tide's primary slot receiver.

He may end up playing in the slot some, but the early expectation internally is that he will work mostly outside.

Playing outside, Dieter caught 94 passes for 1,033 yards and 10 touchdowns as a redshirt junior at Bowling Green last season.

Against Tennessee last year, Dieter had seven catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.

He got behind Vols cornerback Emmanuel Moseley for a 38-yard catch during the second quarter and then beat Moseley for a 31-yard touchdown on the next play to cut Tennessee's lead to 21-17.

Dieter then got behind a different Vols cornerback, Malik Foreman, the next time Bowling Green had the ball, making a 29-yard catch to help set up a field goal.

Tennessee star Cam Sutton was asked this question this week: What do you remember about Dieter?

"Making plays," Sutton said. "He was obviously one of the leaders of that offense as well. I know he had a productive year at Bowling Green as well last year. But just another complete receiver."

A comparison? Think a faster, more athletic, stronger version of Mullaney with a history of making big plays down the field.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound Dieter, who set a national high school record with 437 receiving yards in a single game, had seven catches that went for gains of 29 yards or more last season at Bowling Green.

Alabama's receiver group was already one of the deepest and most talented in the country without Dieter. Adding him makes it even better and deeper.

There were only seven Power Five conference schools with multiple receivers named to the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list. Alabama was one of them. The two players: Ridley and Dieter.

"He's been impressive," Howard said of Dieter. "A guy that came in so late, he really didn't know the playbook as well as some other guys do, but he looks (now) like he's been there for a couple seasons the way he looks out there and plays fast. That's a good sign."

Even if he isn't there to replace Mullaney's body, I was hoping very much he would replace the production. I watched highlights of the season and Richard Mullaney was HUGE for us last year. The guy made a lot of clutch catches and a lot of acrobatic catches. His hustle and desire helped us win a title as you can see him hustle and making multiple blocks during plays that sprang for big gains and touchdowns for other players. Looking forward to seeing the guy and what he can do.

Unfortunately 2 of my brothers are 10rsee fans

I watched the replay of the Bowling Green game with 1 of them and I was very impressed with Dieter.

Of course at the time I had no idea he would transfer to Bama. As soon as I heard the news I went dancing through the house overjoyed

I think this kid will be very special in Lane's scheme

BTW, got my tickets for the USC game, so will be in your neck of the woods in about 6 weeks. Keller is where we are staying. Going to try and hit up Kuby's and Pecan Lodge for some German and BBQ.

Sweet. I'd recommend Hutchinson as well (McKinney or Frisco), little outta the way but they're good...all you can eat for $20 and they have the best brisket in the metroplex (sausage is damn good too - cheddar & jalapeno). Pecan Lodge is legit.

Damn, now I'm hungry.

I have never seen such depth of talent at WR. With only one ball, how will we keep them happy? Will it hurt our ability to recruit WR's in the future?

As long as they go as juniors, I think it increases the attractiveness of the position at Bama. When the USC dynasty was putting up huge passing numbers while feeding two feature backs, they had their pick of WR. When we have record-setting all-pros like Julio and Cooper in the league, that proves a WR can thrive in typical run-first our system.

RTR,

Tim

Line up Ridley and Foster on one side, Dieter and Stewart on the other, go 4 verts offense on every play. Have OJ, run a crossing route each time.

This. And if the backers drop, hand it to BoScar on a draw, or even a dump down on a flare. The corners and safeties will be 20 yards downfield. I'd like to see a backer keep up with him when he gets the ball in the flats.

Not gonna lie, I'm chubbing up at the thought.

A WR that compliments Ridley, with a proven record of reliability and success.

Don't get me wrong, Foster and Stewart are great. But, Foster wasn't 100% last year after injury, and Stewart was streaky. He had some big catches, but he also had some big drops as well. Probably just as many drops as catches, it seems.

Dieter is a stud that just does not drop the ball if it's within a 6-7 ft radius. Rarely so, if ever.

Actually, Stewart had all his bad times the first half of the season, when I kept yelling for them to bench him. The second half of the season, the lights seemed to come on for him, not only making the catches but also started doing a great job of blocking on plays where he wasn't the target.

True, and that's what I was roundaboutly getting at. Hardly the model of consistency though.

Trevon Diggs, who I thought would end up with the safeties, has been turning a lot heads in the summer drills.

Foster wasn't anything after his injury last year.

Actually, Stewart had all his bad times the first half of the season,

I remember Stewart's season more like SLO does here. I've seen a lot talk about Foster and his return while forecasting him to have a big year. Those feelings stem from the thought he was becoming the go to guy in the receiving corps but it was Stewart who was getting the majority of the catches—almost twice as many as Foster had in his three games. I recall Stewart having a good game against Ole Miss, and then seem to disappear for a few games until the Tide played the Vols.

Another that's making waves this summer is Cam Sims. He's got his eye on getting into that top four rotation.
