WV is not in the South; they made that clear in 1863.
I think the intent of the initial statement was to implore of the states that are ridiculed for the same types of things, to not throw stones at each other. I agree with that. WV is a state that is often accused of being inbred, stupid. Etc just as all of us Alabamians have at some point or another. That said.... the statement above is so very true. It is also part of the reason that WV isnt very populated in comparison to the surrounding states. The state lost many families to the south after the stance they took.

Yankees are easy to rile up. I've had people talk crap about me being from Alabama, but some of these people are from Tennessee, so their opinions don't mean anything and I've been surprised they had the intelligence to make a sentence

Sorry but I don't agree. If you study the Civil War, you will learn that it was an exercise on whether individual states have rights to make their own laws, without the federal government ruling that decision. It was more about our country being a republic vs a federation. The federalist won. I am not sure that in the long run it was a good thing. It is obvious that certain issues like slavery was wrong, but a lot of issues like each state making their own rules for insurance have not been good decisions. We need to look deeper when we just say it was a bad thing that we had the civil war or that being from the south is on the wrong side. There is always two sides to an issue.

A lot of citizens from the South left the South and fled to South America and Argentina over this issue. It is still not settled in the mind of many citizens, from the north and the south.

Hey, whoa, we Yanks ain't all bad ;)
Apparently, my ancestors loved 'em. I was surprised to find out that my 3rd and 4th great grandfathers were in the 1st Alabama Calvary. They were Union soldiers. They marched ahead of Sherman all the way to the water. I really didn't expect that when researching my family's past. Probably the weirdest thing was, they were in the Battle of Adairsville which took place in the field behind my backyard. Kind of a weird fact for sure.

So I guess you have a lot of people, walking in your back yard looking for Civil War items.

Bamafan4ever, I found out the same thing. My great-great grandfather and his brother both fought for the Union. Surprised me. That was quite a statement considering they were from east Tennessee and the decision would have been contrary to their neighbors. My older son did the research and came up with letters and all sorts of things. My ancestors' reasoning on the issue was the thing that surprised me the most. I believe this country fought for states' rights, but I'm not so certain that was the highly motivating factor for the soldiers on the ground.

It's nothing but a huge farm field now and yes, the farmer will let people use metal detectors to look for artifacts. The town of Adairsville was once in that field and after the battle that destroyed most of the town, the residents relocated the town closer to the railroad tracks. (The site of the Great Locomotive Chase).

Very interesting. They were certainly the minority and were persecuted for their beliefs, the reason most of them decided to fight for the "other side".

It's funny because I have never seen more Confederate flags hanging from porches, cars, buildings, etc. than in West Virginia.

You should come up to Wyoming. Folks here have them hanging from houses, trucks, cars, etc. Of course every Yankee needs a confederate flag tattoo.

There are a ton of people just in the part of this state I live in and not one of them is from anywhere near the south.
