Ex-Georgia Star Floats Conspiracy Theory On Nick Saban's Retirement

Former Georgia football player James Cook suggests that the College Football Playoff selection process was rigged in favor of Alabama’s Nick Saban.

However, there is no evidence to support Cook’s conspiracy theory, as Saban’s retirement came as a surprise and the committee kept it a secret.

Cook fails to acknowledge the differences between this year and his final season, where undefeated teams secured playoff spots and Texas was ranked ahead of Alabama. If any conspiracy theory were to arise, it would make more sense for a Florida State alum or fan to question the selection process.

Former Georgia football player James Cook has suggested that the selection process for the College Football Playoff was rigged in favor of Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Cook made these claims in an interview with USA Today, stating that Georgia deserved to be in the playoffs and would have won the championship if given the chance. He believes that the committee did not want to see Georgia go back-to-back and intentionally excluded them. Cook also noted the similarity between this year and his final season, where Georgia also lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship but still made it to the playoffs and eventually won the championship. He suspects that the committee knew about Saban’s retirement and tried to sneak him in one last time.

However, there is no evidence to support Cook’s conspiracy theory. Saban’s retirement came as a surprise to many, including his own team. The selection committee kept his retirement a secret and there is no indication that they had prior knowledge. Cook also fails to acknowledge the key differences between this year and his final season. Michigan and Washington both secured playoff spots with undefeated records, making it difficult for Georgia to be included. Furthermore, Texas was ranked ahead of Alabama due to their head-to-head win.

It is worth noting that if any conspiracy theory were to be floated, it would make more sense for a Florida State alum or fan to do so. The Seminoles were the first unbeaten Power Five champion to be left out of the playoff. While Cook’s claim that Georgia would have won its third straight title may not be completely outlandish, as they displayed their dominance with a resounding win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl, it is important to consider the overall context and the other teams’ performances throughout the season.

Michigan didn’t get the memo.. They were supposed to lose the national championship game…

Ask anybody in Georgia and they’ll say uGaly should have gone to playoff. So this is news? Did it for CNS? MJ will destroy brain cells and make one paranoid….

This is a perfect example of how people buy into conspiracies.

Someone believes their group is exceptional (in this case Georgia fans) and that it's "them against the world". They allege plotting against them to favor someone else (Saban over Georgia) because everyone on the selection committee knew of something a month before anyone else did (Saban's retirement). They ignore obvious things (Georgia's loss and more undefeated teams this year) when making comparisons.

It all makes perfect sense.

So in a world of loose lips, breaking news by ESPN, and the rest, he honestly thinks every committee member knew Saban was retiring, kept it a secret, and made the decisions they made for that reason? Not sure anyone ever had either Cook as academic marvels, so whateva...

Was unfortunate for UGA ...they lost sec championship game
As was bamas 3 peat...the lost to AU on miracle play..

The ghost of 3 peat is alive and well..
Off the top of your head, how many undisputed back to back champs have happened in college football's history? It's an aberration in itself.

And, how many back to backs have included a "co-champ?"

Undisputed? Back to back.
Oklahoma 50s. Just guessing here
Bama in 11/12
Uga in 21/22

Cant think of any others

maybe Nebraska and Miami. Without looking

Co champs. all the other repeaters

UA history, as most know, we were denied 3 peat twice. 1966 team denied due to segregation. 1977 team totally screwed in favor of the golden dongers. ND's loss that year was to Ole Miss 20-13. UA beat the Rebels that year 34-13...still pissed about this one.... #5 ND who beat #1 Texas in Cotton Bowl vaulted # 2 UA who demolished OSU 35-6 in Sugar Bowl.

Though very young, I remember it very well. We were royally screwed in 77.

Throughout history, there have been six undisputed, back to back title winners.
There are seven more where one of the teams was listed as a co-champ.

You are right about Nebraska, OU, Bama, and UGA. Army during the war and Minnesota (three peat team.)

Miami has never won back to back.

With the co-champ variable added in Alabama has two more back to backs. Texas, MIchigan State and USC have had one. OU, Nebraska round out the list.

CFB is somewhere around 130 years old with only 13 back to backs. Out of how many teams competing? 1000's.

Just goes to show how hard it is....
And great coaches. Bear had only 3 undefeated team. 61. 66. 79. 2 Championships claimed bama loss to team they shared title with..usc n nd
Saban 2. 09&20. His back to back teams each had a loss. 2 Others losses in championship game.

Unless I forgot some along way

Shocked Oklahoma didnt 3 peat. Several times
And those usc, nebraska , Oklahoma and Miami teams. Power houses

71 nebraska team may have been best team i saw of that era. Put a whomping on undefeated bama as did Clemson in 18...(never figured that game out)...
