What some of the "questioners" don't realize is that there has not always been an AP Poll (1936). Before the AP and UPI polls became the criteria for naming a champ, there were other criteria in effect. Other sports media,etc., who named national champions every year. We go by whatever criteria was in force at the time.

We have 12....no doubt. But all this could be settled with a playoff. I'm getting about tired of pollsters deciding who the champions are. It's the only major sport in the entire WORLD that doesn't settle its championship on the field......sure there is a BCS National Championship game and i'll be glad if Bama wins it, but hey, it's gonna eventually take a playoff to shut all the critics up.

It is what is and it really doesn't matter. The system has been screwed up for so long. The way I see it, at least Alabama was around and winning enough to be considered. You can bet that if other schools were told the same thing they would claim them as well.
