🏈 Florida State's Jameis Winston Has Lost The Support Of His Alabama Hometown

Yeah, I know we are tired of hearing about him, but I found it interesting given the Alabama context so deal with it ;):p

The tides have turned quickly in Hueytown, Alabama, which is best known as Jameis Winston's hometown. Just three months after the town participated in a formal celebrationhonoring the Heisman-winning quarterback, disgruntled residents are making their voices heard.

Winston, they say, has lost their support.

According to several residents quoted in areport from AL.com, Winston is now suffering the effects of poor leadership while he was an emerging high school football star.

They see the negative attention he has received over the past year -- which range from sexual assault allegations to stealing food from a local grocery store, and now yelling oscenities in a public setting -- as the product of a poor foundation established when Winston was still living in the community.

"I am furious with Jameis," said Hueytown resident Pam Miller to AL.com. "I came here and saw him play in high school and he was a special talent. But in high school they allowed him to do whatever he wanted. You could see then that there were problems. So no one here, sadly, is shocked by anything he's done.

"His parents haven't held him accountable, his coaches haven't and the police in Tallahassee haven't. I feel bad for him. I pray for him. Because so many people who are supposed to be leaders are failing Jameis."

Gary Jennings, meanwhile, is concerned about where Winston will wind up. The father of a former Cincinnati Bengal in the NFL, Jennings told the paper he thinks someone needs to set Winston straight before further mistakes are made.

"Jameis doesn't have any respect for women and it's like he constantly needs attention," Jennings said. "He's embarrassed Hueytown."

The article's author suggests that Winston has lost the support of most of the small community. He writes that many of those people feel that his current behavior is the product of several influences, including a naiveté toward the consequences of his actions; his mostly rural upbringing, which didn't prepare him for the national spotlight; and an environment growing up where he didn't face consequences for inappropriate behavior.

On top of that, Hueytown isn't necessarily optimistic about Winston's future. Even the individuals that root for him are concerned that the writing is on the wall for the Florida State quarterback, and that, without a drastic change, the young man could wind up sabotaging his future and destroying the opportunities laid out in front of him.

Pretty much been saying this for a while. His coaches and teachers as far back as jr high enabled this kid. I heard several things about his dealings with females that go as far as a coach telling a female to go and "abort" a child that was thought to be his. Sad state of affairs!!

being from and living in Hueytown, i cringe every time when someone asks me where i live and i say, "Hueytown" and they instantly ask about jameis.

i can hardly imagine what his family is going through having to watch every time he does something moronic get blasted on the news. my mother would kick my ass if i did any ONE of the things he's done.

I wouldn't think about them too much, because there is no doubt in my mind they enabled him to where he became what he is. He hasn't committed murder or anything, but the alleged rape still doesn't look in his favor as more and more facts are released. His parents are as much to blame as him based on the Hueytown resident's comments saying it's been like this for a while. I hope his parents are hurting, because they're the base, the backbone cause of it all.

My wife asked me, this past weekend, where Winston came from and I answered, with some bit of shame, Alabama.

As for his family, I don't know anything about them, but I do know that sometimes, bad people come from good families.
When a person is old enough to make their own decisions, they, sometimes, make bad ones or they get involved with the wrong kind of people.
But that's another story for another time.....

As for FSU, they should be responsible, now, for applying proper discipline to Winston for his sake and the school's reputation.

I agree. I hate it for his family's sake. They've got to live, shop, go to church, etc with these people. I would be ashamed to disgrace my family like he has his. And that's a big part of the problem with Winston: he's not the least bit ashamed.

First off, one person doesn't make a town look bad.

Pretty much been saying this for a while. His coaches and teachers as far back as jr high enabled this kid. I heard several things about his dealings with females that go as far as a coach telling a female to go and "abort" a child that was thought to be his. Sad state of affairs!!

Yup, you can't feed the machine and then get upset when the machine you fed is "suddenly" broke. I say suddenly jokingly...

@rick4bama the FSU staff can do something about him if they would suspend him for more than one game. Jimbo has given him chances to correct his behavior so maybe a more stern attention getter is needed. If I am his daddy, we are having a come to an understanding meeting. ;)
@alabama mike If FSU would have done that during the Clemson game maybe, Jimbo show the whole world he doesn't care.

Hueytown is what I would call a working class suburb. Not posh, high income like some of those south of Birmingham, but good solid folks who go to work every day. Before Jameis came along their chief claim to fame was that a family of NASCAR drivers (the Allisons) called it home. I am sure that most of them are embarrassed at his behavior, and upset at the efforts to excuse this behavior.
