šŸˆ šŸ”„ Hot Seat 2025 / Coaching Carousel:

Because we watch the games.... Before jumping to an extreme what that doesn't mean, the D has strenghts, they are getting better, they are creating turnovers, and stepping up at critical times. But the defense struggles against the run. What I do not understand is why is that is so hard to understand and why is that viewed negatively when people point it out.
Simply put. This is not what you have said.

Come on, man. Simple? Ya know this isn't the way these conversations about the defense have gone.
I've never been a fan of Womack's D. I know some are happy with the statistics and maybe rightly so but if you watched a random pick of 50% of the D plays this year do you think most would think they play fundamentally sound defense? I hate to watch it, I enjoy watching Oklahoma play D this year for the most part.

That is how I have seen the conversatons.. I say something about the D and specifically about run D and it is like I am calling peoples baby ugly.
Within the last week you said the defense was subpar. You didn't say the run defense had issues. It was the defense as a whole. That's is not the case.

IF you would have said I don't like the yards the defense is giving up in the rushing game this conversation would be completely different. It would be centered more on why (and I do believe there's a reason being overlooked.)

While efficiency numbers are statistics, it's a little vague just to call it "happy with stats." The rushing yards in the last quarter versus UT? Statistically, who could be happy? When you factor in things like game control, the point differential, and those yards coming in garbage time? I'm not unhappy. I'm disappointed in some fans knowing the game evolved but their expectations remain in 2011. As many times as it's been said, "it's a different building, it's a different staff, it's a different approach..." that's still being, essentially, ignored.

Kevin mention this casually the other day. I thought it was a great point that I should have emphasized. I thought about diving into these numbers; didn't have the time that day.

So, in a nutshell on just one point. Are we seeing teams move the ball, late, in the fourth quarter? Yes. Are they scoring? No. Are they getting those yards between the 20's? Yes. Does the defense stand up when they get in scoring position? Yes.

The point is ... while all of this is going on, and Bama is sitting on a lead, what is happening with the clock?

I think some understand that and while I can see that happening and understand the concept I can't make myself like it.

Okay. Consider this.

When you were growing up you looked at the numbers and made judgments based on box scores and finals. It's what you saw in the paper on Sunday. It grew. It evolved.

People see "200 yards rushing" and don't see that 100 came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach.

Do you count foul shots in the last few minutes and say the team had a fouling problem? I'm trying to think of how to say this ...

I get what your saying and I understand the strategy but I don't like watching an alabama D give up anything. I enjoyed the days of joyless murder ball and making their ass quit. I understand it's gone and probably ain't coming back but that doesn't change my preference for it. I do not like watching any defense Womack has been a part of. While his concept may work I still say they don't play fundamentally sound defense, gap control, maintaining an edge, pursuit angles, form tackling that's just what I want to see. I'm not arguing your point it's just my perspective.

I don't disagree with any of this. I never have. I look from your perspective and don't like the view. It's not a placation. It's a verification. Context. Against whom, when, and where...to me, it matters.

It does matter.

I didn't like going to prevent defense which is similar to what Womack did in the 4th quarter just a different style.

My main issue with him is the D doesn't play like they are well coached and is very susceptible to giving up long run plays. I haven't checked but it seems like he's been running less stunts, twists, etc the last few weeks and it's lessened the gash plays.
