Finebaum guest host calls for Bama to lose five games in '15

Paul Finebaum might need to make a quick return to work, as his fill-in host Peter Burns make a bold prediction Wednesday - Alabama losing five games this season.

Crimson Tide fans responded quickly to defend their team and immediately questioned Burns sobriety in only a manner a true Alabama fan could possibly think to retort:

The surprising pick could certainly be an attempt to rile up fans and gain attention for the radio show but considering the strength of the SEC West and Alabama's inexperience at quarterback, it's not unfathomable for the team to take a step back in the division this season.

Considering Nick Saban has only lost 15 games in his seven year career in Tuscaloosa, five losses does seem very unrealistic. With favor continuing to slightly mount against Alabama this offseason, it could be interesting to see the Tide play the role of underdog for once in the Saban era.

If a quarterback doesn't emerge I think we lose two at most. Our defense will carry us pretty far this season. I just can't think of five teams that field better teams than us. LSU and Auburn are the only two that worry me. Arkansas and Georgia we have to be ready for. Everyone else I feel we have too much depth for at big time positions. Coach has a plan or two for the whole running back situation.

Finebaum guest host Peter Burns explains 5-loss Alabama prediction, unhappy response from...

Peter Burns
didn't set out to inflame the Alabama fan base. It just kinda happened Wednesday afternoon as he guest hosted the Paul Finebaum Show along with Booger McFarland.

But a caller touting Tennessee's chances in Bryant-Denny Stadium got Burns thinking. A look at Alabama's 2015 schedule and some quick figuring led to a notable prediction. The Crimson Tide will lose five games this season, Burns said to kick-start the firestorm.

"Oh my god," was McFarland's immediate response.

It didn't get easier when Burns got home after the show.

"I got threatened to be put on the couch by my fiancƩ last night," Burns said by phone Thursday morning. "She's a diehard Alabama fan. She said 'Why are people texting me about what you said on the Finebaum show today?'"

Coming off an SEC championship and Sugar Bowl appearance, Alabama's been in the top five of most preseason rankings. It's been as high as No. 2 behind defending champion Ohio State.

Burns isn't so sure, though.

His projection happened organically, not part of a plan to poke the bear with a stick. When a caller suggested Tennessee could beat Alabama, Burns looked at the Tide's schedule with an analytical eye. He noted the unsettled quarterback situation and the absence of Amari Cooper as reason for concern.

Looking at the schedule, he said road games at Georgia and Auburn were the best bets for Alabama losses. Match ups with Texas A&M, Arkansas and Tennessee were "coin flips" and LSU is always a battle. All told, he said Alabama could lose four regular-season games and that disappointment will spill over into a bowl-game defeat.

Burns said he didn't realize how hard October and November would be for Alabama until he looked at it game-by game.

"We started really looking at it and I said if things start going sideways, not knowing what the quarterback situation is and I don't know if there's an option that's as athletic and is as creative as Blake Sims was, who has seen that offense for four years," Burns said. "I've seen this go sideways for a lot of teams, maybe this is year. I started looking at the schedule, came up with 8-4 and now I can't open up Twitter.

"Are you an idiot?" one caller said. "Our second string is deep enough to roll with the boys in the SEC."

Burns' favorite response questioned if he was "high on fart bubbles."

The reaction on Twitter had a similar tone.

"Listen, I'm laid back," Burns said. "So none of it bothers me. I love the passion of Alabama fans."

Burns and McFarland return as guest hosts at 2 p.m. CT on Thursday and Friday on ESPN Radio.

If we want to, we could poke a few holes in this explanation. He's made a point with the comment "I've seen this go sideways for a lot of teams." So have I.
A season going sideways falls back to mental make-up a lot of the time. I think about the number of injuries the Tide had in '10, a very unforgiving schedule, and I don't remember this teams' season going sideways. I don't see this '15 squad as one losing a "mental grasp" this year.

That said...

I still won't be shocked, in the least, if we find the SECCG featuring two teams with five combined losses.

You guys still listening to people make predictions? What happens if he's wrong? Not a dang thing.

By the way, he will be wrong. Here's a prediction. Bama wins it all this year. Period.
