No one knew Tyler was going to get hurt in the ULM game. So, we're going to set that aspect aside. Quite frankly, as I've said here on numerous occasions before this game, Alabama was going to win that game regardless.

Now, looking at this situation in Fayetteville realistically.

Their offensive line play has been poor all season—a fact that was resoundingly proven in our game. Their offensive line coach, and the players, and the scheme was the same when Petrino was there. It would have been the same IF he was there this past weekend.

Tyler was banged up a lot the first few games of the season because of what I just mentioned. That would have happened IF Petrino was still there.

Their defense has been poor over the last four seasons. They did have a new DC and a new defensive assistant coach for this season. It would have been the same IF Petrino was still there.

IF Petrino was still there what would have changed this season?

They probably wouldn't have lost to ULM, but it was the defense that gave up those points in the fourth quarter.

They probably wouldn't have been shutout by Bama.

They would still be looking at an 0-1 SEC record and all the hype of being national title contenders would be out the window.

Now, last but not least...a quick story.

I remember a team that finished the season ranked #3 in the final polls. I remember that team was considered a favorite to contend for the national championship. I remember a coach having an affair. I remember that coach lying about the affair only to admit it later on. I remember that coach losing respect from his own staff and losing the respect of a lot of the players on the team because of that incident.

I remember the 2000 season with Alabama dropping out of the polls very quickly to start that season.

What we all don't know?

Even if Jeff Long had decided to keep Petrino would he have maintained the respect level he had with his staff and players?

Right now, as their 2012 season looks eerily like our 2000 season, I don't know if it would be better with Petrino than it has been without him.

NOW, onto FAU and what I consider to be the "Greatest Unknown about our contest this weekend."

As some of you know, I've lived in Dallas for 10 years and one thing I really miss is topography - mostly rolling hills and trees. I got my "fix" driving up to Fayetteville, it really is some beautiful country driving up 540 from Van Buren to Fayetteville. The stadium was really nice and the food was way better than the crap they served at Cowboys Stadium.

I can't help but feel a little bad for the fans, they didn't ask for what happened and they are stuck trying to pick up the pieces and put the blame somewhere. Petrino is the obvious answer as to where the blame should rest, but it seems that the Jeff Long and J.L. Smith have come under "friendly" fire and are probably catching alot of flak at the moment. I heard some really terrible comments from some of the fans aimed directly at Smith and Long. I don't suspect J.L. Smith will make it thorough the season, I'm probably wrong - going for it on 4th and 10 w/ 2:45 left in the game and not getting 3 points on the board sealed his fate.

I know Alabama didn't have the same circumstances during the time you mention above Terry, but as a fan who loves my Alabama, I can relate to how frustrated they are at the whole situation. I know I certainly went through many levels of emotion with Alabama during the down years.

I guess its why I appreciate the hell out of what we have right now, its always a great to be a Bama fan, but we are in a really special time right now - I'm just taking it all in wanting it to last forever - but I know it won't.

You said it Plano. I can remember going to games during the Shula years knowing we had chance, only to see the team fizzle in the 4th quarter and leaving BDS heartbroken, mad, and dejected. All that seems like a lifetime ago. I too, know this won't last forever, but I can soak it all in while it lasts!!

their whole team chemistry and locker room is just in a mess. No leadership, bad work ethic, bad coaching......You 'll have to wonder what their team will be like next year with a new H.C and no Tyler Wilson+Knile Davis
