🏈 Fall Scrimmage #2: Reports/Observations

Btw... Those of you holding out hope for Barnett can hang it up. Saban wouldn't give the keys to a true freshman even if he played like Peyton Manning.

Those from Woolly know I'm a big fan of the idea of Coker. I can't remember a time when we've bad a guy with his arm talent. He played well and made zero mistakes every time he saw the field in a game last season. Whether people here want to admit it or not he was one bad drive away from taking over in the iron bowl last year.
Coker only had one meaningful drive and rest was garbage time. He did find a way to mess up as well against FAU. It's not a big deal he has great athletic ability he just sucks at the mental part. Everyone there agreed on that. If only you could have seen it.

Here is a article from al.com.

At the bottom is a video of Coker during warmups. The passes he's throwing here are some of the prettiest damn passes we've had since Brody was at the Capstone. So, those who are at the scrimmage please tell me is he caving under pressure or is he just taking to many chances during the scrimmages? A qb throwing passes like he is in this video makes this team unbeatable.

I was there brother, it was awful. His decision making just isn't there. I want it to be because he has all the tangibles. I'm not anti Coker I'm just being realistic.

Football can be so frustrating. A guy like Nick Marshall who can't spell his own name can start no problem but a guy like Coker who finishes college in 3 years can grasp the mental aspects of the game. It makes no since. I'm sticking to my guns, Coker will be the starter. Blake didn't beat out Coker last year because he was a better qb it was because he won the team over and had a better connection with the best wr in football. If I'm wrong, so be it but it just makes more since than anything else.

Hey at this point anything is possible. If I read all the signals right seperation happened Saturday exactly like they wanted. Not to say practice can't create more. More light will be shown over the coming days.

Nick Marshall couldn't say his own name much less spell it.
Cokers problem is pretty simple, he's a mouth breather.

Mentally, he doesn't have it. And you're dead ass wrong saying Blake wasn't a better QB... Let it go.

Yea I was confused by some people that mentioned that running a read option was more sophisticated than being a pocket passer. I could be wrong, but my understanding was that the read option was extremely simple to run. You basically just read the middle line backer and where he lines up depends on the type of play you run. Im sure there are other small nucances to it but i imagine its way easier than snapping the ball having to figure out which type of coverage it is which guy is going to be open and making that play all in about 5-8 seconds time.

The read option requires you read the front to determine who your read is, either NG, 1 technique, 3 technique for inside read. QB gives or keeps off of these guys. He then determines to pitch off of the 5 technique or OLB. On an outside read, determine 5 technique or 7 technique. Now give or keep off of them then determine who to pitch off of, OLB or FS or SS.

As for a pro style, a lot of determining the coverage comes in the pre snap read. He determines the number of safeties, position of the corners (inside position, outside position, press man, 5-8 yds off). These looks will determine a possible zone or man look. Now when the ball is snapped, the QB has 3.5-4 seconds to determine where the ball should go. A QB only wishes he had 8 seconds back there! A lot of passes have a set scheme to them to help in the progression. Play side has a short route, intermediate, and deep route. QB often reads like peek deep, 1 then 2. The backside routes are normally drags (7-8 yds) or digs (15-20 yds) with a post coming from the other backside receiver. Going to the 4th or 5th receiver is often called from the sideline because the booth has seen something during the game or coaches saw it on film and have told the QB, "when we call this, and they show this, hit the post!"

And there we have it.

I know that the D will crush all comers and no one will be able to score a single point, but just what if some one does get extremely lucky and the O has to match them score for score or worse yet come from behind... Well, that are my worries and much like last year when I predicted BS would not be able to beat one SEC team.... I am probably thinking CNS will probably NOT consult me or any of the rest of the posters here. So let's get our slamming the choices and snarking about why we know which would be best escalated!!! Awaiting the development of BB and Dad handing the keys over to him.
Seems big brother AM has the keys just now (all snaps with the 1's, seems like the family wagon is big brothers hands for sure)
