🏈 Fall practice notes & CNS Presser

Fair enough. But the idea that Wills who just showed up is already getting reps with the 1's, and likely has jumped Leatherwood, is really impressive.

I just realized Womack is a RS sophomore... For some reason I was thinking he was a RS freshman. We've got 5 OT's right now that haven't played a meaningful snap that are big time prospects... Basically battling for 1 spot the next 2 seasons since Jonah has a spot locked down. Womack, Wills, Leatherwood, Lashley, Randolph... Amazing job of recruiting. RTR

And a junior college transfer in 5* Elliot Baker from California running around somewhere.

After getting a less-intense walk through on Monday, Alabama was back on the football field for one of the hottest and more humid practices on Tuesday.

A few observations:

-- Bo Scarbrough was back with the running backs after missing Friday's practice and Saturday's scrimmage. Nick Saban said he was sick those days but appeared to be playing full speed.

-- Josh Jacobs was still out of practice. It's been more than a week since a hamstring injury sidelined him.

-- Ronnie Clark remained with the running backs as he's been for the last week or so. He had transitioned to the tight ends in the spring.

-- It looks like Matt Womack was still working with the first group at right tackle as Jedrick Wills made progress at that spot.

-- Practicing in dime, Hootie Jones was a safety and Minkah Fitzpatrick moved up to play closer to the line.

-- No scout team jerseys yet for Florida State. Stay tuned later in the week.

Minkah is a demon off the edge in a pass rush situation. He is fast, strong and packs a wollup. Great ball skills don't hurt. I think they will blitz him out of this or use him to cover the inside slant. Not many qb's are going to out run him when he has up a head of steam either.

Been a lot of amazing DB's that have come through the Saban era... I don't think there's been a better one. He's so versatile, physical, fast and most importantly aggressive. Kid is going to be something at the next level

BTW this would be a great debate... I personally would put Landon Collins as my #2, although he didn't play that much early on. Haha was special, Mark Barron, Javy, the list goes on... RTR

I have always pulled for Rashad Johnson for where he came from and how he developed under CNS his last two years. IMO, he bought in to"The Process" when CNS arrived and set the cornerstone for the DB's of the future.

One of the side notes on the FSU game was learning that their starting safety Trey Marshall is suspended for the first half. He was caught targeting in the second half of the Michigan bowl game. That is amazing to me. Should that kind of punishment be allowed to be carried over to the next season? Suppose he had been a senior? That one I don't get.

My oldest wants to be in law enforcement, I've talked to several cops, including our city chief about it. They've all said degrees help in advancement, which equals pay. Sounds like most who get into LE these days have a degree.

Firemen, most of them have 2-3 side jobs they're working in their off hours. Pretty good job if you think about it, especially if you need space from your significant other :D.

Our security/EMTs where I work are fire and rescue folks doing the side jobs.

Practice day 17

By Tony Tsoukalas

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After going through a walkthrough practice Monday, Alabama returned outside for a full practice Tuesday. Players were dressed in full pads in humid, 87-degree weather for their 17th workout of preseason camp.

Here are a few notes from the media viewing period:

— Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough (illness) was back in practice and looked to participating full-go with the rest of the running backs. Fellow running back Josh Jacobs (hamstring) was absent from practice and was seen wearing street clothes prior to the workout.

— Damien Harris led the unit followed by, Scarbrough, Najee Harris, Brian Robinson and Ronnie Clark.

— Christian Miller appeared to be limited during practice. The redshirt junior was standing alongside the rest of the outside linebackers but was not participating in any drills.

— Alabama’s defensive line remains the same with Da’Shawn Hand, Da’Ron Payne, Joshua Frazier and Raekwon Davis leading the first unit. The second unit consisted of Isaiah Buggs, Jamar King, Johnny Dwight and Quinnen Williams. LaBryan Ray, Taylor Wilson, Daniel Powell and Phidarian Mathis made up the third unit.

— I’ve been hearing positive things about King from and his performance this offseason. While the senior isn’t one of the flashiest names on Alabama’s defensive line, don’t be surprised if he sees a good share of action this season while providing depth to the unit.

— Alabama’s offensive line also remained the same. Jonah Williams, Ross Pierschbacher, Bradley Bozeman, Lester Cotton and Matt Womack made up the first unit from left to right. Alex Leatherwood, Deonte Brown, Brandon Kennedy, J.C. Hassenauer and Jedrick Wills were on the second unit. Brown has bounced back and forth this offseason, dropping as low as the fourth unit a couple of days ago. Tuesday’s placement might be an optimistic sign for the redshirt freshman moving forward.

— Alabama practiced out of the dime formation during team drills. Trevon Diggs and Anthony Averett were the cornerbacks, while Tony Brown played Star and Minkah Fitzpatrick played at Money. Hootie Jones and Ronnie Harrison played at the safety positions, while Shaun Dion Hamilton was shadowed by Mack Wilson at the lone linebacker spot.

— The second unit consisted of Jared Mayden and Levi Wallace at cornerbacks. Deionte Thompson was shadowed by Daniel Wright at free safety while Xavier McKinney was shadowed by Hunter Bryant at strong safety. Shyheim Carter was shadowed by Kyriq McDonald at Star, while Jones was shadowed by Keaton Anderson at Money. Dylan Moses was shadowed by Keith Holcombe at the lone linebacker spot.

— ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler were on hand to take in the practice. The duo will call Alabama’s season opener against Florida State on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. CT on ABC.

— I was able to talk with Herbstreit a little bit before practice. He talked with Alabama head coach Nick Saban earlier in the day and said Saban seemed optimistic about this season. On a personal note, Herbstreit was a really down-to-earth guy, which is not always the case with guys from the national media.

— I also noticed a New York Jets scout in attendance.

Practice day 18

By Tony Tsoukalas

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama remained outside for its 18th practice of preseason camp on what was the first day of classes at the university. Players dressed in full pads in 90-degree weather.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher announced the Seminoles would begin game prep for the Sept. 2 opener against Alabama on Wednesday. During the media viewing period, it did not appear as though the Alabama was following suit, as no FSU scout-team jerseys were spotted during the workout.

Here are some notes from the media viewing period:

— Injured running back Josh Jacobs (hamstring) was spotted by reporters and was dressed out and present but was not doing much during drills. His presence stops a streak of nine straight absences during practice.

— After being withheld from drills on Tuesday, Christian Miller was back participating with the outside linebackers. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound outside linebacker appeared limited and seemed to do his drills at half speed. He had a hamstring-support apparatus taped to his left leg.

— I forgot to mention this earlier this week, but Jamey Mosley is back practicing after dealing with a concussion last week.

— With Miller moving back to the end of the line, Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers and was followed by Mosley, Terrell Lewis, Mekhi Brown, VanDarius Cowan, Ben Davis and Chris Allen.

—The defensive line worked on drills that forced linemen to stay low before exploding to ward a tackling dummy. Da’Shawn Hand led the line and was followed by, Da’Ron Payne, Joshua Frazier, Raekwon Davis, Isaiah Buggs, Johnny Dwight, Jamar King, Quinnen Williams, Phidarian Mathis and LaBryan Ray.

— Alabama’s first unit on the offensive line was the same with Jonah Williams Ross Pierschbacher, Bradley Bozeman, Lester Cotton and Matt Womack from left to right. Alex Leatherwood, Richie Petitbon, Chris Owens, J.C. Hassenauer and Jedrick Wills made up the second unit.

— Alabama practiced out of the dime formation in the secondary. Trevon Diggs and Anthony Averett were the cornerbacks, while Ronnie Harrison and Hootie Jones played at the safety positions. Minkah Fitzpatrick worked at Money with Tony Brown at Star. Keith Holcombe was shadowed by Shaun Dion Hamilton as the lone linebacker.

— Wide receivers worked on cone drills and short-passing drills. Calvin Ridley led the line and was followed by Cam Sims, Robert Foster, DeVonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs and Derek Kief.

— Damien Harris led the running backs and was followed by Bo Scarbrough, Brian Robinson, Najee Harris and Ronnie Clark.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama took part in its first day of game prep Thursday as it prepared for its Sept. 2 opener against Florida State. Players were dressed in full pads in 87-degree weather for their 19th practice of preseason camp.

Here are some notes from an abbreviated media viewing period:

— Josh Jacobs (hamstring) was once again back out with the running backs for a second straight day. He was participating in individual drills but appeared to be limited.

— Damien Harris, Bo Scarbrough, Jacobs and Najee Harris were wearing their normal numbers, while Brian Robinson and Ronnie Clark both wore No. 9, the number of 6-foot-2, 231-pound Florida State running back Jacques Patrick. Alabama’s walk-on running backs were wearing No. 3, which belongs to Florida State freshman running back Cam Akers.

— We also saw scout-team numbers in the outside linebacker unit. VanDarius Cowan wore No. 9 belonging to Florida State defensive end Josh Sweat, Chris Allen wore No. 16 belonging to Florida State linebacker Jacob Pugh and Ben Davis wore No. 99 belonging to Florida State defensive end Brian Burns.

— Matt Womack appears to still be getting reps on the first unit at right tackle. Jedrick Wills was practicing with the second team. Right now, Womack is probably the safe bet to start the opener, but I wouldn’t count out Wills later in the season.

— Alabama first unit on defensive line consisted of Da’Shawn Hand, Da’Ron Payne, Joshua Frazier and Raekwon Davis. Isaiah Buggs, Jamar King, Johnny Dwight and Quinnen Williams were on the second unit. LaBryan Ray was playing Florida State defensive end Demarcus Christmas on the scout team.

— I didn’t have too much time to check out the secondary, but I did note that Minkah Fitzpatrick was practicing with the cornerbacks during individual drills.
