🏈 Fall Camp Wk 3: Reports and Observations.

I love me some Jay Barker, he is a business friend of mine and a great guy but what did he do in 92 to win a game? He threw 7 count them 7 passes in the championship game and I can't remember a game that year where he threw more than 25 passes... turned out pretty well for us that year. Not saying we will win a championship.. actually I think our schedule is too brutal this year even if we had Tom Brady to go undefeated.

I would actually say this to Jay because I think he was a huge part of our success but we didn't win any games because of him but there were a couple we didn't lose because of him. I keep hearing that the QB is going to have to win us a game and how the game has changed but it is all cyclical and I think the defense could catch up this year. Plus, I think that there is something to this HUNH smash mouth style that Boz had said. Coach Saban goes even more secretive than normal, institutes the sideline flashcards like spread teams, doesn't have a dominant QB and has let a couple little comments slip about no huddle and playing fast.. I think he is up to something.

This type of style would not require a stud QB to win a game we can win with and athletic QB.. "Jay Barker..ish"

He went 25-39 in 1992 against Ole Miss. They stacked the box and sold out on the run. Barker responded and threw for 285. We only rushed for 83 yards that day, after averaging 241 going in to that game.

That's just option ball, period. Nothing to do with aubrun. We read the DE or DT in the Wishbone, and Tyler Watts rushed for what, 162 yards, running the option against South Carolina. auburn has no corner on the option, just being pieces of crap to be buried in the dung pile.

I agree Coker's mental process is a concern. But maybe if we simplified it like this and took away complicated coverage and route reads, that would take the pressure off him.

If the staff chooses Coker, then they obviously see something we don't. Maybe he is high risk/high reward. But, maybe we manage that risk by taking the pressure off him and simplify things and then maximizing his reward potential and let it fly 50 yards down field when the D shows us what we want.

I agree that we limit his throws to play action after a Henry gallop. Run a smash route and limit it to short, deep, or throw it out of bounds. Always have a checkdown.

His high reward ratio, despite risks, makes him the QB with the highest ceiling on our roster. He can Chuck the ball at least 20 yards farther than any QB on our roster, with ease. The big play capability is there.

Take Jamarcus Russel, for instance. A world beater in college with a god-given howitzer for an arm. He gets to the league, and it turns out he's dumb as a box of rocks. Yet, Jimbo was able to highlight Jamarcus's strengths in college by not overcomplicating the LSWho offense for Mr. Purpuh Drank.

Kiffin is great at adapting to featured personnel's strengths. Look at what he did with Blake last year.

It's clear the team is behind Jake. That speaks a lot to team chemistry. Look at the 2012 stretch with AJ. Reports came out after the season that a big reason for our losses was a lack of team chemistry. AJ had lost the team with his attitude in the Sugar Bowl. I'm sure he'd gotten his draft grade, and was a finalist for 3 big awards, one of which being the Heisman. I'm sure he started thinking his shit didn't stink, and the field general became the dictator.

All that to say this: if the team has Jake's back, then I think we can win with him. I'm still on the Team Morris bus, though. He has the lowest risk of any of our QBs because of his smarts. And a serviceable arm. I'll trade that bus in if Jake starts performing well when the lights are on and the pressure is off by week 2 or 3.

Pre-K thru 2nd grade! I initially taught at Fultondale High School, where ArDarius Stewart graduated. Taught 7-12 PE , Health, and History. I got married and moved to Sylacauga, where I have taught PE for the last 16 years. We were initially K-4, then transitioned to a K-5, then back to Pre-K-2. Hell! I play all damn day!!!

I coached for the first 13 years of my career. Assistant football, head baseball, tennis, track, assistant basketball, even did soccer for a year. Thus, "Jack of all Trades" moniker!
I elected to get out of baseball after 3 rounds of the playoffs and 54 games. My wife was more or less raising our two kids by herself, a 3 and 4 year old. I had missed my son's first year playing baseball and my daughter's first year of dance, including her recital. As the old saying goes, "if momma ain't happy, nobody's happy!" The AD got pissed at my decision and told the HC of football that I was out for his job and that I would stab him in the back first chance. According to him, I was pissed because I had been passed over for the HC job. Long story short, HC asked me to volunteer for a year and I voluntarily handed over my keys and packed up my shit and left! Saban got hired and I got my season tickets back and haven't missed a game since. I've made several road trips along the way as well. I go home everyday at 3pm and I'm in the woods by 3:30 during deer season. I see every game and activity that my kids are involved in and momma is happy!

I seriously doubt that Coker can throw a football 70+ yards(very few human can), and I know for a fact that Bateman can throw 50+. And I think BB6 can as well. If you doubt me, go watch their Youtube vids from high school. I don't think Bateman has gotten weaker since arriving in T-town.

Having said this, I doubt arm strength will be the determining factor in who becomes our long-term QB in 2015.

Are the running backs good enough to carry the offense? Im really thinking we see the most running backs used over the course of the seasonthan we have in a long time, especially with Drake being used out wide some. Bo will see the field after his suspension and possibly it is blessing in disguise so he will be an unknown commodity and fresh legs under him. Harris has shown ability and physically looks SEC ready. Henry hasn't had to be the lead dog yet and it would be foolish to over work him before November. That is why I could see Gore or Marks getting PT in some sets more so if the can pickup a blitzing backer. Going 5 or 6 deep this year. Im talking in meaningful games too, not coming in for garbage time.

Yeah but we're barely a week from kickoff. This many QBs sliding back and forth so rapidly this late in the game is a clusterfuck.

This all relies on the OL, if they love up to the expectations we can hold off maybe 8 of our opponents. The rest we will have to throw against, bottom line Ole Miss and LSU won't let us line up and just run.

We're really that bad? 5 QBs and none can throw the ball without constant turnovers? If our defense and JK Scott live up to expectations, a game manager is all we need. I don't think we need massive offense against OM or LSU. They may have good defenses, but it doesn't look like their offenses are going to be anything to write home about.

Pretty amazing (and impressive) that Minkah has essentially jumped Tony Brown and Maurice Smith in the matter of a few months on campus. Gotta keep em all healthy though. That's gonna be the key for the DB's.

I think it was @TerryP that pointed to this over a week ago and said expect the last class in the secondary to look better going into game one than the Brown/Hump duo.
