From what I have heard tonight, Cooper Bateman has a very legitimate shot of being the starter against Wisconsin.

I heard he is making a push, my source isn't convinced he moves past Coker but Morris yes. I think 2 are playing anyway so...

Dude. It's not new or foreign to our OL. Most of them blocked in zone-read offenses in HS.

The thing about zone read for OLmen is... NEWS FLASH....ZONE BLOCKING.

They've been blocking shit like this for 5 years at Bama, just without the zone read.

Hard to read on an elliptical! I went back and re read your post. It is zone blocking to some extent. It would be easier if I could draw this shit instead of type and explain. If we were running the read to the right side, Dom is blocking down anyways and leaving the end man on the LOS to be read. Your pulling backside guard is essentially changing the play from a read to a trap. If you keep the backside guard in, he will zone block up to the second level. Cam will cutoff the backside end from getting in on the play. Kelly blocks man on or reaches the 1 tech to playside. Shank releases up to Mike and so forth. You could motion the TE over to account for a walked up safety or backer.

Listen, I know this looks simple but it takes hours for it to look decent. It is something that could be put in but we may NEVER see it. Hell, it may already be in!

We've run plenty of outside zone sweeps with the backside guard pulling to the playside in the past.

Hell, we'd pull the guard AND center sometimes when Vlachos was here. Did it against Florida in 09 SECCG, I believe. Nacho out front popping the outside backer was a sight.

We are both pulling for the same team and I think we both DON'T WANT TO SEE COKER BACK THERE SCREWING UP! I'm simply saying that the read option concept is a bit more complicated than zone blocking and man blocking. The damn footwork for the QB and backs getting proper meshpoint are PURE HELL!

It would also throw Barnett into his first live-game action against two of the best defenses we'll face all year. Not a good move, in my opinion.

But remember, he will have practiced against the very best defense anyone will see all year!

Just read the backside DE after the snap, bruh. A-la Tebow and Florida a few years ago.


Put Drake in the slot, motion him across the formation pre-snap. If corners are playing soft, hand it to the Drake. If a corner goes or shifts with him, look for the dive with King Henry. If the backside DE crashes inside, keep it to the outside.

We're talking zone-read spread here, bro. Not Notre Dame Box shit.

I got you, brother. No flames, just good debate. I love talking X's and O's like this.

Mesh points in a timed option O like ND Box or Wing T are vital, yes. Hell, even in the veer.

But, we've run outside zone and zone sweep out of the gun with the slot in Jet motion a gazillion times since HTWMI and Julio were here. The only other wrinkle we'd be adding is the QB keep. Simple. Hell, we've also run a little zone QB keep with GMAC even, a few times. We ran it with AJ with Maze in Jet motion. There are essentially no complicated mesh points to figure out here. The biggest thing is timing the snap with the Jet motion. Zone blocking schemes are still intact at the snap, and all Jake has to is read the backside DE at that point.

Maybe..

But, it's actually not. Urban Meyer ran this at UF. All malzahn has done is changed up the WR alignments and upped the tempo. All the zone read has done is modified the old Wing/Double Wing concepts and spread you out more, with the pass option. This is not something new. Malzahn isn't some architect. He just tweaked a few old principles.

That said: If it's all we can do with what we have behind center and we're successful, who GAF?

That's just option ball, period. Nothing to do with aubrun. We read the DE or DT in the Wishbone, and Tyler Watts rushed for what, 162 yards, running the option against South Carolina. auburn has no corner on the option, just being pieces of crap to be buried in the dung pile.

Interested to know your take on the play calling cards...? Being the barn will have done this first. Or the HUNH offense..

To my knowledge we have never committed to neither. But since it is being considered from what I read it must have merit. You can run HUNH and not snap the ball every 10 seconds. It is strategery in that sense. Keeps subs off the fried. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. As far is the flash cards it makes you look hip. Good for recruiting. Sideline bling.

I agree Coker's mental process is a concern. But maybe if we simplified it like this and took away complicated coverage and route reads, that would take the pressure off him.

If the staff chooses Coker, then they obviously see something we don't. Maybe he is high risk/high reward. But, maybe we manage that risk by taking the pressure off him and simplify things and then maximizing his reward potential and let it fly 50 yards down field when the D shows us what we want.
