🏈 Fall Camp thread - 2018! --Updates from scrimmage #2

Got my email yesterday and I will be attending the scrimmage on the 18th. I look forward to that email almost as much as I do to seeing the email concerning arrival of season tickets!! ALMOST!!!! Don't know if my son will make the trip this year or if my Dad will make the ride. My son is a HS junior this fall and they have their preseason scrimmage on the 17th and likely will have practice or film study the next morning.
I don't claim to be an insider. I'm just a former walk on that earned a privilege or two during my time. If I see any oddities, I'll try and remember to pass them along.

— Alabama made some switches at linebacker as Christopher Allen practiced with the inside backers while Ben Davis moved alongside the outside backers.
For clarity's sake--Allen and Miller have been getting reps inside all three days of practices. The way this is worded it sounds like the move just happened on day three.

Another note: From day one I've heard several talk about how the younger players look. It's as much of an annual conversation as "white helmets." I found comments on Phidarian Mathis encouraging both in the way he's developed but in terms of depth how he's getting reps inside with the defensive line.

Who is number 17? He has that quick twitch.

Nevermind, I looked it up and it is Waddle. Makes complete sense now. Love how he is full go on and isn't taking anything off on his routes during practice.

That's one of the things that stands out to me at high school practices right off the bat. Kids pretty much jogging through routes, lazily making cuts with little to no correction from coaches. Then, there will be that one person that is going full boar from beginning to end, snapping in and out of his cuts, running crisp routes. It's not hard to see which kids have a chance to end up playing on Saturday's.

Pretty sparse

-- Sophomore Chris Allen continues to work with the inside linebackers. He was part of the third group of inside linebackers in drills along with freshman Jaylen Moody. Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses were the first group. Josh McMillon and Markail Benton were second.

-- Ben Davis continues to work with the outside linebackers.

-- It looked like everybody was practicing as far as I could tell.

-- There were several NFL scouts at practice. The Steelers, Saints, Eagles and Lions all had scouts in attendance.

Tuesday Insider Report (Practice No. 4)

Tuesday Insider Report (Practice No. 4) | BamaInsider.com

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its fourth of 20 preseason practices Tuesday as the team prepared for its Sept. 1 season-opener against Louisville. Players were dressed in shorts and shells and practiced outside in sunny, 89-degree weather. Here are a few notes from the media viewing session.

— Josh Jacobs appeared to be somewhat limited during practice. He went through some of the drills at half speed and didn’t get as low as the other backs.

— Christopher Allen continued to work with the inside linebackers while Ben Davis remained with the outside linebackers. Earlier this offseason, Christian Miller spent some time inside. However, he has worked exclusively with the outside linebackers during camp.

“We’re just plugging and playing, and whatever we can do to help the team that’s what we’re going to do,” Miller said Tuesday.

— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers and was followed by Miller, Jamey Mosley, Jarez Parks, Cameron Latu, Eyabi Anoma and Ben Davis. Defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi has been really interactive with Anoma, making sure he gets his technique right on every play.

— Lupoi was his usual self with the rest of the outside linebackers, cracking jokes while giving them instruction during drills.

“He brings the energy every day to everybody on the team,” Miller said. “One thing he does really well, he’s a really good teacher. He likes to break things down to the concepts, and that way you learn the foundations and they it builds from there. Like I said, he just brings the energy and guys take to him very well.”

— Mack Wilson led the inside linebackers and was followed by Dylan Moses, Markail Benton, Joshua McMillon, Jaylen Moody and Christopher Allen. Benton has drawn some praise this offseason, especially from Wilson.

“He’s one of those guys I try to stay on a lot because I see potential in him just like Rueben (Foster) saw it in me,” Wilson said. “I tell him all the time, ‘If something happens to me or Dylan, you’ve got to be the one to step up. I try to tell him to take everything seriously because you never know. You’re always one snap away.”

— The offensive line practiced in groups of three. Ross Pierschbacher, Lester Cotton and Jonah Williams represented the left side of the first unit, while Chris Owens, Jedrick Wills and Alex Leatherwood made up the right side. Matt Womack worked alongside Joshua Casher and Richie Pettibon in one trio.

— Isaiah Buggs led the defensive line and was followed by Raekwon Davis, Quinnen Williams, Johnny Dwight, LaBryan Ray, Phidarian Mathis, Stephon Wynn, Christian Barmore and Tevita Musika.

— Despite being listed at 6-foot-1, 338 pounds, Musika doesn’t have much unnecessary weight on him. He’s built like a brick and moves pretty well for a big guy.

— The defensive backs worked out of a nickel package with two groupings. Trevon Diggs, Saivion Smith, Jayln Armour-Davis and Josh Jobe worked at corner, while Shyheim Carter, Patrick Surtain, Kyriq McDonald and Keaton Anderson worked at Star. Deionte Thompson Xavier McKinney, Jared Mayden, Daniel Wright and Eddie Smith served as the safeties.

I'm a bit out of the loop, is Chris Owens our backup center? Seems like he's been making up ground over the year +!

And I'm really starting to feel bad for Josh Jacobs. He's got some shit luck... Would love to see him get the chance to compete healthy for once

This would be better put if he'd said "I've only seen Miller on the outside." Another practice observer, in the same viewing periods, has stated unequivocally that Miller has worked inside and out.

Saw this posted on The Rant.......hope this kid does sign with Bama....he can play this season as well.......

Kevin Hagan on Bill King this morning said he is hearing Kaho will either enroll at USCw or Bama. He said it looks like Bama at this point. He put it conservatively at 70% and said he looks for Saban and Tosh to close this out ASAP.

I know this had been discussed and he might be wrong here, but he said Kaho would be immediately eligible this season.

Goes without saying, but he of course said it - Kaho would be an absolute homerun for the staff as a #1 recruit at the #1 position of need.

Relative to our team chemistry he indicated it was not impacted by the QB battle. He said the unquestioned leaders on offense (Harris) and defense (Jennings) have the team where they need to be and that at Bama almost every player is in or has been in a position battle so it's not that unusual of a situation for the team.

He Coming......

Great get and talk about something out of the blue. The Washington folks ain't happy about losing their #1 recruit and many are screaming the fix is in. But, that's what fans do. Many claims that his mom was always big on USC and that Dad preferred Alabama before he signed with Washington.

I say, keep the Polynesian pipeline going, Tosh.

-- It was the first day in pads. Saban likes the acclimation period.

-- Stormy weather forced the team inside for part of practice for the first time this August.

-- First scrimmage is Saturday and they're looking to see who is "emotionally" ready to play is a big part of it.

-- He's happy but not satisfied with the first five days of practice. "I love the process," Saban said.

-- DL Stephon Wynn strained a ligament in practice Tuesday. Won't require surgery but he will miss some time.

-- Saban on Jalen Hurts' comments: Every player has a right to speak their mind and every player can speak with any coach at any time. Saban said there is a lot more talk about the interview outside the building compared to inside the building. Nothing there will factor into any quarterback decision. More to come on this later.

-- Shyheim Carter is "a jack of all trades" who can play any number of positions in the secondary from star to money and cornerback.

-- Josh Jacobs is 100 percent, playing fast.

-- Saban said it's hard to ignore the cameras from ESPN. "They might need to use some bleeps," he said with a smile. He likes the idea of being able to showcase the program on national TV.

-- Saban said he loves it to hear players like Christian Miller loves practicing this time of year. We wrote about it yesterday.

-- The concern with youth is there are some players who didn't have a role last year but will be called upon this year. You don't always know how players respond in a game situation.

Wednesday Practice Report (Fifth practice)

Wednesday Practice Report (Fifth practice) | BamaInsider.com

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its fifth of 20 preseason practices Wednesday as the team prepared for its Sept. 1 season-opener against Louisville. Players were dressed in full pads for the first time as they participated in their hottest workout of camp under sunny, 93-degree weather. Here are a few notes from the media viewing session.

— Both Josh Jacobs and Brian Robinson were limited during practice. Robinson was not practicing at all during the drills I was watching. Instead, he was standing off to the side of the running backs with two footballs in his hands. Jacobs did participate in drills but was at half speed for some reps. Jacobs also missed reps during Tuesday’s practice. Neither player was wearing a black, no-contact jersey Wednesday.

— Damien Harris led the unit followed by Najee Harris, Jerome Ford and Ronnie Clark. When Jacobs was participating in drills, he was at the back of the group.

— For a third straight day, Christopher Allen worked with the inside linebackers, while Ben Davis moved to outside.

— Allen appears to be taking well to his new role as Alabama experiments with him to add depth inside. At 6-foot-4, 242 pounds, he’s the biggest player in the unit. However, he moves well for his size and looked agile during ball-recovery drills.

— Alabama might be gaining another reinforcement at inside linebacker in the coming days as four-star Ale Kaho is reported to be joining the Crimson Tide after receiving his release from Washington earlier this week. Kaho never enrolled at Washington and would be eligible to play right away for Alabama.

— Alabama’s secondary worked out of the nickel package during team drills. Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith were the first-team corners as Smith was shadowed by Josh Jobe. Shyheim Carter was shadowed by Patrick Surtain Jr. at Star. Deionte Smith was shadowed by Eddie Smith at one safety spot, while Xavier McKinney was shadowed by Keaton Anderson at the other.

— Nigel Knott and Jalyn Armour-Davis were the corners on the second unit. Jared Mayden was at Star, while Kyriq McDonald and Daniel Wright played at the two safety spots.

— Josh Jacobs appeared to be somewhat limited during practice. He went through some of the drills at half speed and didn’t get as low as the other backs.

I'm really starting to feel bad for Josh Jacobs. He's got some shit luck... Would love to see him get the chance to compete healthy for once

@Tidestalker, yeah me too but CNS said he was 100% healthy in his press conference. What gives?

Must've been nicked up 2 days ago. Probably taped an advil to it and realized he's fighting for every snap he can get
