🏈 “Everybody wasn’t playing their A-Game. They were just ‘Oh, if we escape w/ a win, we’ll be alright-

To be honest, I could see this. Often times, a team will take on the vibe that the coaches put out. Play it close to the vest and look to jump on an opponents mistake rather than be aggressive.

As long as the team holding out for the mistakes ISN'T making those mistakes I don't have a problem with that approach; at all.

Looking at the last five losses, how many of those did we beat ourselves (using this type of game plan?) Ole Miss, no doubt. A&M in 2012 fits as does LSU in 2011. We went toe to toe with Auburn most of the time last year but those same mistakes (IE: missed FG's, etc.) cost the win.

One of the most frustrating things for me was how confused the secondary was with the bunch formations. I dont know if that was something new from Ole Miss because I hadnt watched more than a minute or three of their games thus far, but West Virginia used bunch formations so its not something we have never seen before. And it was beyond inexcusable that some type of changes weren't made. Landon being as confused about those is also inexcusable, you are supposed to be the leader and an All American. You got a true freshman covering one of the best receivers in the SEC, help him out a little.

Never thought I would see the day that Cyrus Jones is the most consistent DB in the secondary, thats not a shot at him because he has played pretty well much of the year. Its just the rest of the DBs save for Landon for MOST of the year have been pretty awful. DBs are Saban and Smart's calling card, and for our secondary to not show much improvement from last season is pretty alarming to me.

I mentioned this in another thread and was tempted to continue with my thoughts but left it alone.

So many have been calling for changes in personnel. "Where's OJ?" Well, we know he had blocking issues last year, has them again this year, and now we're seeing dropped balls.

On your note, how many times have you seen Tony Brown being called for? Tony was targeted 8 times, gave up six receptions. Cyrus targeted six times, gave up two.

Collins did have issues with that bunch formation. He was pretty damn close to those last two TD's. However, as mentioned in that other thread, it's important to note they were lining Treadwell up on the opposite site. We couldn't just play him in man.

OJ and the eighth official did commiserate on his blocking. He had that drive-killing drop, but he also made a great catch, took a hit and held on earlier. In regard to Collins, I haven't watched the game again, but sometimes when there is a bust the safety is the guy in camera shot but he's just coming over to help. Don't know if the lapses were on him or not. Cyrus Jones is developing well, and Tony Brown is a true freshman who will also develop. As will Bozeman. Interesting to see if they use Nudie less as a true FB to keep him fresh as number three or if they spring Tenpenny.

Tim

Brown (and Humphries for that matter) will come around. It's a slow process. BUT(!!) if we had a more aggressive pass rush and more pressure on opposing QBs, the DB play will improve as a result. I think we need to be more aggressive and less conservative up front. Let the guys play and do what they do. We have the talent.

Tony will develop, that Im sure of, but what was kind of mind boggling to me was he looked like a different player in the second half. In the first half he seemed to be jamming receivers and at least getting his hands on them early. In the second half he wasn't even touching them. I dont know if for some reason they just decided to play off and not try to jam or what but it wasnt working.

Having Cyrus follow Treadwell around probably wouldnt have helped matters because I dont think he could have gotten physical with Treadwell. Eddie Jackson is about the same size but he seems to be able to play for physical. We need him back healthy quick. Brown getting thrown in the fire is gonna help him and the team in the future but right now hes gonna struggle bad at times.

Well there was multiple situations where he was confused as to who he should be covering in those bunch formations and ended up taking the wrong guy or just getting beat because he was thinking too much. On the tying TD he missed the tackle after Brown got beat, and then the second one I cant remember if it was zone and Landon was late or if Brown got burned and Landon was late there too but regardless he was late getting over.

I doubt we see Fowler's time reduced at fullback, he is too valuable there and McCarron is nowhere near the blocker or receiver he is. Its def. time to see Tenpenny's touches go up.

We got beat at the los both ways in this game. The secondary is improving but they will need some help from the line more often early this season. iMO we have to risk more and rush more peeps more often to win these big games.

Bama is still a good team. We ran into a defense that was superior... That is all. What ole miss did to us is what we did to teams a few years ago.

So I ask again as I did in another thread, are the defensive coach's throwing too much at our defense? When you have confusion with the coverage, missed assignments and aligned wrong is it too much? This defense had two weeks to prepare for OM and we didn't look good. If we can't cover in man, do we play a 2/3 deep zone? Do we stunt more with the defensive line? Do we blitz our backers more? I am not sure what the answers are to the questions but I hope some can be found this week in practice.

How so? TJ Yeldon ran all over them and the left side of the line was destroying their d-line, right side struggled tho. I have no idea why we went away from running to the left. And we drove the ball the whole game, mental errors and penalties is what killed drives. And I think Ole Miss averaged like 2 yards per carry rushing, so how was the d-line beaten? Not near enough pressure was put on Bo Wallace in the second half I do agree but Dickson had two sacks and Ryan Anderson got a cpl big hits in on Wallace, but its kinda hard to get any pass rush when your DBs are getting beat right off the line.

We got beat when we had two drives get to around the Ole Miss 20 and then ended at the Ole Miss 40 out of field goal range. We did this not once, but twice to ourselves and two field goals would have made a world of difference going into the final plays of the game.

"Not near enough pressure was put on Bo Wallace in the second half" --- because we got blocked. not bashing. just how i see it.

you can't run left the whole game. they stopped us for short gains a few times also which changed down and distance enough to make the coaches want Blake to pass. Our receivers were blanketed and Sims chose to not run for first downs. Here we are.

I too wondered why we got away from the run but nevertheless. Their D-Line > our O-line... Our D-line < their O-Line. They also beat us in special teams. We had them at skill positions but couldn't get the ball to our best players often enough. too many penalties and turnovers and we lose on an unnecessary "hail-mary" pass when we were moving the ball pretty well.

I think some of the loss can be attributed to inexperience also.. especially in the secondary and at QB. Blake played ok but he looked like the game was too fast for him like he needed to take a shot of Jim Beam and get slapped about 3 times by his meanest teammate before going back in.

Bama can still win out... but does Ole Miss lose twice with that defense? *pondering*

I think Fowler's comments are reflect the mindset of the program since last year. Team leadership has adopted this stance. Somebody needs to jerk knot out of this team & it needs to be somebody else besides the coaches.

Do you remember when McLain stopped that guy with the Gatorade cooler who was grabbing it at the SEC Championship when they beat UF? That instance was very telling to me about that team. I think it no coincidence that team went undefeated.

The media's reports, along with how they are interpreted, and fans' reactions this season are prone to A LOT of hyperbole this year.
I'm not using hyperbole if that's what Fowler said. That being said, I listened to the interview and didn't hear him specifically say that. But I don't listen well.I certainly pay almost no attention to the media. I am my own media. Like Rupert Murdoch, except more handsome and slightly older.

@riz In a conversation last night with one of the Bama beat writers I was asked if I saw/listened to the interview. I haven't. His impression, based on interviewing Nudie for a few years now, was along the lines of what was said wasn't exactly what was meant to be said—not misspoken, but misinterpreted.

Funny thing about all of this in my eyes...here we are going into week seven and it's just like going into game four the last several years. Questions, and Arkansas there to provide a few answers.

I've wondered the same myself, mike. Are the Saban/Smart defensive schemes too complex for the way the game has evolved?

It seems to me that our defense plays a lot by rote instead of instinct, like they're more worried about being in the right place instead of just playing. I know being in the right place is important, but when that's all you're thinking about you forget what you are supposed to do when you get there.
