šŸˆ ESPN reports on Ohio State--a story that hasn't gone quietly in the good night.

Urban is as slippery as they come in the media... I could easily see him surviving this. And if he doesn't, he will have a huge lawsuit against tOSU for reasons that I agree with TerryP on.

It's a crazy world. I'm enjoying the hell out of watching Urby suffer though :bama2:

@BamaBoyJosh , I saw that video yesterday and wondered the same thing. I also wondered how much of that stuff happens at every college and university. I remember Coach Rich Wingo, who was the S&C coach when I was a freshman was pretty abusive and abrasive. I just thought it was normal.

I mean its a different world. Even when I was in high school (2003-2005) my D-Line coach would kick us square in the gooch if our asses were too low in a 3-point stance. And I mean HARD. There is no way that would be tolerated now, especially in high school.

I played HS in the late 80's and it was rough. Got to UA and Wingo was slapping guys around and kicking them out of Coleman, literally a kick to the gut out the door and down the steps.
When I began coaching, I made the decision to never be "that coach".

Urban just passed the buck upstairs. Now, Urban, the AD and the Title IX dude in charge you would assume would have been notified about the 2015 incident. Courtney Smith says she didn't receive even one inquiry from the university about the alleged 2015 assault, not one. Think about the universities liability as well under Title IX and just the political climate today. It's going to be interesting what the investigating committee finds in the way of how everyone was notified by Meyers and what the university's due diligence was toward Courtney and her husband in response.

Which brings us back to Meyers and his moral obligations as head coach to do the right thing. Now he admits to knowing and reporting the 2015 incident. He's going to have to explain why he kept this guy on staff after these multiple domestic abuse incidents all the way back to 2009 Florida and especially from 2015 till 3 weeks ago when he was actually fired. The term "enabler" is still looking very accurate. At this point, the university also has some explaining to do about their due diligence after the fact. Based on what looks like negligence already from other ongoing abuse incidents within the university, I don't see how Urban Has done anyone any favors.

And can someone please explain to me why Urban was put on administrative leave when the university would have known he did his due deligence?

What I don't get is the loyalty Urby has for this guy? Despite all this dating back almost a decade you not only keep him on but take him to a new job with you? I would highly doubt its because hes just so fantastic as a coach or recruiter.

Heard an interview with McMurphy yesterday and he mentioned something interesting. Smith's ex wife told him that at one point Smith told her that if he went down for anything he would take EVERYONE at tOSU down with him... McMurphy didn't have any specifics but the dude clearly has a screw loose, maybe Urban didn't want to rock that boat.

McMurphy said he had more info that he wasn't releasing, what that is who knows...

The timing of this seems really convenient for him, his contract with ESPN expiring this month and he's going to be looking for a job as he said he's been using Twitter/Facebook to stay relevant so that it makes it easier for him to land a job in August 2018.

Not true. McMurphy has been laid off since April from ESPN. He also had a very restrictive non-compete clause .

The implication that there was anything convenient for him implies a lack of credibility for the story, which couldn't be further from the truth and is just a dumb thing to imply.

What's not true?? Not sure how anything I said makes the story any less credible. Explain please :-)

My point, he was laid off in April 2017, had a 18 month no-compete clause, of which reporting via twitter/facebook doesn't violate. His no compete clause ends this month. And yes, it's very convenient the story releases weeks prior to his contract with ESPN expiring allowing him to work wherever. Maybe it was just perfect timing...

I think it's silly to believe he wasn't thinking about the timing of the article. It keeps him in the game at the right time...

you said his contract was expiring. He has no contract. He was laid off.

McMurphy has been doing reporting and had offers. He broke the Frost to Nebraska news. He got his new job back in December. As for this story, he's been researching it for a while and had traveled around to do in person digging. Calling it convenient marginalizes the absuse Courtney Smith suffered and at best is clumsily worded.

@NickelDoubleDog,

You're both saying the same thing, telling the same story, just differently.

He's still getting paid from ESPN through the remainder of his original contract. If he went to work for another outlet, he'd lose the money he was owed from ESPN. Publishing articles like this on Facebook doesn't violate his settlement agreement when he was laid off.

Literally, Brett has been paid by ESPN to publish a story on Facebook.

I believe his new job starts this month as well--Stadium.

First, I'm not marginalizing anything with regards to her reported abuse...in fact, I've said the opposite if you read what I've said in this thread. I'm just saying, the timing of this with the timing of his contract expiring are close to each other...I should have said coincidence instead of convenient.

In Brett's own words, he has a contract with ESPN that expires "on Aug 12, 2018 at midnight approximately". He is still getting paid by ESPN, if he works somewhere else, he stops getting paid by ESPN. Give this a read https://deadspin.com/how-espn-ended-up-paying-brett-mcmurphy-to-post-the-yea-1828089258.

From the link I posted earlier in this thread in Brett's own words below. He talks about his contract expiration here if you want to listen to it. Good podcast if you want to hear Brett break down how he became aware of this and how he dug in to get more information.

ā€œI was part of the mass layoffs at ESPN last April and I had 18 months left on my contract. So we had non-compete clauses in our contracts. What that means in simple terms is if I wanted to go work for another company I was free to but by doing so ESPN was no longer required to pay me the remainder of my contract. So to get paid the remainder of my contract…I could not work for a third-party. However, I was able to tweet on my personal Twitter account. Also put information on my personal Facebook account because that was not a third party.ā€

ā€œSo when I got laid off, I had a decision to make. You know, I could sit on my couch and eat lime Tostitos for the next 18 months, which I did a lot of anyway, and not work and hope I get a job in 18 months or I can continue to try to report news, break news, via Twitter or Facebook, and try to stay relevant. So when my contract is up in August of 2018, then hopefully I’ll be more attractive to be hired somewhere else. So basically that’s what I did. I said I’m gonna bust my ass and I’m gonna try to keep working.ā€

ā€œI just figured the way the industry was, if I didn’t stay relevant or try to stay relevant, any value I had to a future employer 18 months ago would diminish greatly if I wasn’t doing anything for the following 18 months. So I kinda worked while I wasn’t working, if you will, and tried to stay relevant, and here we are.ā€
