🏈 Dre Kirkpatrick

Not sure about his chances, but I sold him a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV not long ago. He is a pretty nice guy. He didn't come across as anything but humble to me. Seems like he might be a pretty good gamer too.

He and his cousins are regulars in my Gadsden store.

Not sure why I felt the need to share lol. Seemed pretty cool to me. Growing up in Tuscaloosa, I used to see the players all the time, so it's kind of cool for me to see one every now and then in Gadsden.

Why would we not play the best pass cover player in the country when we have a defined weakness is covering the passing game?

Just because someone is considered the best in HS does not necessarily translate to them being the best in college...especially in their Freshman year. Don't forget Alonzo Lawerence was considered the second best in the nation by Rivals last year, and I don't think he even saw a snap on Special Teams this passed season. I'm not trying to be a downer when I say that either...I think Dre will be a great one when it is said and done.

I'm guessing that Dre will atleast see the field in one way or another this next season, but I think it's just going to hard for him to come in as a TF and knock off two veteran starters who were part of a VERY good defense last year...and a big part of our success minus the Utah game.

There's a glaring difference between Lawrence and Kirkpatrick though. Lawrence is more of an athletic player playing corner. He was never really taught the fundamentals of playing CB and was a guy that some predicted could end up being moved to safety as a result... on top of that, he is the type of guy that will struggle to understand Saban's plays and adjustments at the CB position. Dre Kirkpatrick has very few fundamental flaws. He is a true CB, despite having the frame and aggression to make him much more. He was coached well and already understands a wide variety of coverages. He is better than Alonzo in being able to anticipate where a ball will go because of his coaching. Alonzo Lawrence could be a great player, but DK is a special player at his position... and that's a drastic understatement. Coachability is the key. Alonzo is going to be a hoss when it clicks and if he accepts the coaching, but just because he didn't play as a freshman, doesn't mean we should expect the same from DK.

As for who he would replace... that's a tough one. Kareem has shown he can get it done but I wouldn't say he is COMPLETELY safe, Marquis was the one that seemed replaceable. Javy will be nearly impossible to dethrone. He is one of the most impressive CBs I've ever seen at Alabama, and we've had some good ones (his brother is a great CB as well at Nebraska so maybe it's just in their blood)... and he will be a leader on the team next year. His size is the only thing he has against him, but he was nearly impossible to beat last year. Even catches his receivers made, he was right there and he has shown it's not a problem for him to take down bigger receivers. Another year like last and he could end up going in the first 2 rounds. I do think Dre will get on the field though. Tough to say though considering he's not even practicing with the team yet. I'm confident in his abilities though.

What are the chances that Dre will start in 09? Do we see him replacing Kareem Jackson (3)?

This is why I've come to hate recruiting sites.

Kareem is our #1 corner and a legit pro prospect. Barring injury, there's a 0.000000000000000000000% chance that Dre beats out Kareem. I like Dre and I'm very happy that he signed with Bama, but he has done NOTHING on the college level.

There is a good chance that Dre will get a hard look at Safety when fall camp starts.

I'd like to know what your thought process is behind that statement.

I don't think it would surprise any of us if Dre worked his way into the nickel/dime packages.

That I can see as a possibility.

A dime package with Barron being the sixth defensive back would be fun to watch.

Terry.. I think it's from messageboard chatter. I've seen that mentioned more than once, but I like to think we have an intelligent coaching staff... and an intelligent coaching staff isn't going to take the top CB in the country, add him to a team that is in DESPERATE need for CBs and move him to safety. I think the reasoning behind is that he has great instincts and we need to get him on the field somehow... perhaps people think he can see the field quicker by moving to safety. I BELIEVE we are losing Arenas, Rogers and M. Johnson at the end of the year. Which will leave us with BJ Scott, Alonzo Lawrence and Kareem Jackson at CB. We will be losing Woodall, Sharrieff and King at Safety.. leaving us with Green, Lester and Barron. Green and Barron have already looked impressive. There hasn't really been much word on BJ or Lawrence blowing our staff away as of yet... so I'd say there is no chance of him moving to safety. Elite corners are much harder to come by than safeties IMO.

In the practice notes on the blog the other day I mentioned how Saban had talked about players and how some of them have been hitting a wall.

From what I've heard, two players I immediately put in that box were BJ and Lawrence.

BJ is understandable considering how little time he's spent there. Lawrence, and I don't know this for sure but suspect it, is taking a little more time because that book knowledge is taking some time to sink in.

From what I've been told, they understand a lot of what they are supposed to do, but aren't in the position where they do it instinctively but have to stop for the split second - "I'm supposed to do this.... :bolt: "

That'll come with reps.

FWIW, one of the players I'm going to keep a close eye on next fall is how Norwood does. I like him A LOT as a safety.
