🏈 Dre Kirkpatrick

As far as the shoulder thing is concerned, his cousin - a regular in the store, said that he was recovering very well from shoulder surgery and that he should easily be ready for fall camp.

How about his teammate Kendall Kelley? I think his shoulder injury was more severe than Dre's. How is his rehab coming along?

Terry, I also really like Norwood at safety. Well, I also really like him at receiver, but I think the move could be justified. He has experience and has great height and frame for the position, not to mention some long arms. He also does a great job of getting up to a ball and not waiting. Good anticipation skills and can get physical with taller receivers. I can EASILY see him moving to defense. I think he's got the skills to excel on either side of the ball.

I'm ready to find out if Woodson qualifies. He did a good enough job on the ACT though so we're close. I really like him as a physical safety or rover. He could also end up struggling with the playbook though.

Terry P,
Just looking at the Safety position, there has not been a guy that has really stepped up at Johnson's old position. Not olny do you have to be smart, but ability to cover the angles with speed and timing, and good coverage skills. Dre has the size, and ability to play a corner, even at his larger size. Now if he can hit, like I've read in a few other places, that is good for run support. I could see him getting the feel at nickle and then becoming a starter by season end. Corners usually run about 6 foot or less, safetys are around the 6-2. If he is smart like a safety and can cover the field, and cover like a corner, run him to safety. Put some muscle on hima nd you have a George Teague.
It wouldn't hurt, only help. We can continue this dicussion in about 4 months....?

TWJUA... if you want to move the highest rated CB in the country to safety (where we will already have 2 YOUNG players that have impressed our staff)... who do you want to be playing corner in 2010?

That's a valid thought process based on his athleticism.

Let me counter that with this -

It wasn't Johnson athleticism that made him so good in his role. It was his understanding of what the defense was doing.

Playing a corner back role in our defense is a lot easier than playing a safety because they are put in man coverage so often. The safety position entails a lot more, namely in this case, the ability to call the defensive sets - a role that will be shared to a degree with Woodall, I'm sure.

Kirkpatrick may have an idea of what the defense is doing, but he'll be far, far behind our guys we have at the position right now.

For what it's worth, those things you mentioned about Dre can be said about Robby - except Dre has an inch or so in height on Dre. King is going on his third year working with the defensive backs as is Ali. Green, going into his second fall.

We don't know how this shuffles out in the end. But, when I look at the situation along with who is coming in with Dre...I simply don't see him moving to a safety position.

Can his beat our Marquis for the 5th DB off the bench? There's a question I'd consider worth looking in to.

Personally, I suspect we see a battle between Alonzo Lawrence and Dre for Javy's side. We lose our 1st and 2nd string player on his side on '10.
