🏈 Doug Marrone to be the Tide's new offensive line coach

In regards to Eddie Gran...

He would be a great fit IMO, even as an analyst if he's not the RB coach. Said recently I was surprised Kentucky let him go... he didn't have a decent QB to work with in Lexington, but still did some good things with that offense. Look what he did with Lynn Bowden in a pinch. Gran is a very well respected RB coach who also has experience coaching WR's and QB's and calling plays. If he is added to the on-field staff at UA, he's a more than formidable recruiter (who'd get the Saban recruiting bump) who knows the SEC extremely well and knows how the recruiting game is played.

Pat Smith mentioned today that Jay Boulware (most recently the Texas TE/Special Teams coach) may be in the mix for an analyst position. Several of those spots to fill...

IF IF Nick were to actually the BOB and Doug Team then I assume other members of the staff will have to pickup the slack on recruiting over these two NFL guys. I just don't see them out and about and that can still work if the young guns can get the recruits to visit then the two NFL guys might be able to close the deal. Every coach isn't a great recruiter. I believe this duo is far from being a deal at this point with the NFL still making hires.

Marrone certainly knows the score on recruiting. He has been on Donnan's staff at UGA, and Fulmer's at ucheat, as well as HC at Syracuse. He's 56 - don't know what impact his age might have. Flood is 50. Here's an article on Marrone from al.com - neither good nor bad -

the guy has a lot of experience, sounds like he knows the OL, and of course he does have a lot of connections to the NFL over the years. Being a good coach and a nice guy and having connections would sure seem to go a long way with recruits - we'll see......

As for O'Brien, again, I think the guy knows the score. You HAVE to recruit on Saban's staff. The guy is 51, coached under Belicheck, coached Brady and Watson, rebuilt Penn State. He HAD to recruit to get players to come to Penn State when it was a disaster. The resume is there. How it translates to recruiting? Not sure, so again, we'll see..... But again, if you're a good coach, that itself it going to go a ways with recruits....

Gran has a HUGE amount of experience - the experience on the offensive side of the ball, IF he joined Marrone and O'Brien, would be incredible. As I mentioned earlier, in regard to recruiting, you'd have a 51 yo OC, a 56 yo OL coach, and a 55yo RB coach, IF Gran was hired AND put in as RB coach. Not sure how all that impacts recruiting, but as far as guys being coached up, if those three were together and worked well together, it would be an amazing amount of knowledge and coaching and concepts. And Gran is EXTREMELY familiar with the southeast and SEC recruiting, for sure.

Recruiting is the least of my worries with Saban in T-Town.

That's kind of my thoughts. These guys having so much NFL experience and being able to go into a HS kids living room and tell them what it takes to get there, is a plenty of clout IMO.

Joe Pendry is 73 years old. That means he was 60 when he was coaching OL for Saban in the early years here at Bama. 2007 thru about 10/11.
He did alright.

I stand by the quoted statement of Mando. As long as Saban is in title town, recruiting will take care of itself.

My Texas folk say he's not impressive...
Another example of Texas folks eating their own.

2020, the one season he's been back, didn't feature much of a passing game from the 'Horns. Hell, their leading WR had 30 receptions on the season, leading TE had 15.

Special teams? Now we're talking about Herman's playbook versus Saban's and there is no qualitative comparison.
