🏈 Does being undefeated guarantee you a spot in the playoffs?

As soon as i saw Oregon jump FSU for the no.2 spot, it was confirmed that being a top tier undefeated team in a power conference does not automatically put you in the playoffs. I know FSU only dropped to 3 but, what if there were two more teams that were equally impressive as Oregon in the playoff commitee's eyes? Would those teams be numbers 3 and 4, which would put FSU out of the mix? I know the rankings mean jack right now, but what if it were the final rankings and FSU got left behind while 3 one loss teams equal to Oregon go to the playoffs? What if it was an undefeated Bama that was left out behind 3 one loss teams? This is all just a product of an active imagination, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. It just makes me wonder if the bias towards Alabama could really screw us somehow in the future. Just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this. RTR!!!

Well if Bama beats MSST and doesn't move into the top 4, we'll be in trouble. This committee is a bit of a intangible, we really don't know how they'd react to anything until we get a larger sample size of their rankings. If Bama wins out and wins the SEC Champ game, will we still hear that Bama doesn't have a quality win? I mean the same people who think TCU is amazing for pulling out a victory over WVU on the road seems to think ALA (Who beat WVU earlier in the year) doesn't have a single quality OOC win. If this is the way the committee is viewing it I'm a bit scared at the influence the media can have on those members.

I like the playoffs, although I would prefer 8 teams. I liked the BCS selection method much better. It was far more objective, and the subjective portion of it was done by college coaches, who are far wiser than this bunch of bureaucrats and former Secretary of State we have now.

In a round about way, the committee is going to force teams to beef up their OOC schedule. Even though Baylor beat TCU, we see that they think more of TCU because Baylor has a weak as pond water OOC. Also, alot of talk about Miss State's OOC should they drop a game down the stretch.
I too would prefer an 8 team playoff but suspect it will take 3-4 years before we reach that point. I would rather have the BCS system to determine the teams rather than a committee of 12-13 people.

This just made it almost impossible for the SEC to place two in the playoffs. The winner of the game this weekend, provided they win the SECCG, make the "playoff". The rest go bowling. There's a scenario where zero, zilch, nada SEC teams are in the playoff.

That is why I want an eight team playoff. The five conference champions plus three at large teams chosen by the committee..

I was thinking that too, PJ. Weak, weak conference and they haven't looked good in it. The Notre Lame squeaker didn't help either now that everyone realizes how pathetic the Golden Domers really are. It must be nice to be in a weak conference that has no defense (talking about TCU and Baylor and Oregon) and be able to score a gazillion points and impress members of a committee who know nothing about football. Meanwhile, it's a battle of attrition in the brutal SEC.

Changing the subject but I can't believe we haven't seen a post about McElroy being an idiot. Remember him picking LSU before the season? Plus he said that Sims wasn't the most accurate quarterback in the world. I figured he would have been separated from the fold by now. McCarron mentioned the team's perceived lack of leadership and the villagers carried torches and pitchforks to his castle.

True! IF the SEC East Champ was to win out, no team from the SEC will be in the playoff!! I think that the only way two teams from a conference will EVER get in is with a tough as hell OOC and we expand from a 4 to an 8 team playoff!

On Mike and Mike this morning they were going over how another overtime game with Bama winning has the distinct possibility of MSU staying in the top four. I could see that considering how they treated the Ole Miss loss earlier...

That's the more logical outcome the way I see it, Terry. The worst scenario, God forbid, Bama wins this weekend, loses to the Barn, Miss State wins the Egg Bowl and loses to Mizzou in the SECCG... not one SEC team in the playoff due to the cannibalism. Grad's scenario posted previously and realized.

Still, STILL, probably three of the top five teams in the country preside in the SEC. @uagrad93 I'm with you. Until this "playoff" goes to 8 (I wish 16), the SEC is screwed.
