ESPN is reporting that UGA has offered Kirby around 800,000 for 3 years. I love Coach Smart, as he has helped us tremendously recruiting the state of Georgia, but I'm not sure UA should match the UGA offer.

Smart is a great DC, don't get me wrong. But so was every other DC under Saban. I hope we keep Smart and it won't bother me IF we match what UGA has to offer, I just don't think it's necessary. We're going to stay at the top of the conference and nation defensively as long as Saban remains the head coach.

I would think that Richt is on a short leash, so Smart going to GA could be a very good move in terms of an opportunity to land a HC job.

Bama needs to pay the money to keep Smart! We can't afford to lose a great coach who might I add has earned that raise! He is a great recruiter, the players love and relate to him...SEC Title & National Championship...If Coach Saban can do it all then there's no reason to have any additional coaches on his staff! That's pocket change for Alabama. If we can afford to pay Coach Saban a King's Ransom then we need to take care of the supporting staff to ensure winning and we sure don't want Coach Saban in the same position that Meyer is in now. Having a great team of coaches around Coach Saban takes a great deal of stress off of him! if anyone could be hired to take Coach Smart's place and be great why don't we have the greatest offense in the nation?! Look at the other top schools and they all take care of their coaches and pay them very well! Coach Saban preaches working as a team and the importance of having a great team of players and coaches in order to win national championships and in order to remain on top year after year! We all know how good Coach Smart is and what he's done for Alabama...and so does everyone else in America! And they are trying to take him from us! BAMA can and needs to show Coach Smart how important he is to the program and send a message to other schools that they are not going to have any success if they try to come hire our top coaches! Its time for BAMA to protect our family and send a message loud and clear....

You do know that he played for Georgia, right? You do know his wife also attended UGA, right?

Sometimes it's about more than money. Even if we match, and it appears we have(although I don't agree with the deal), I believe he's leaving. And I can't really blame him.

A chance to go back to the school you played for, the state you grew up in and love? I'd probably go too.

I agree. I think Smart has benefited from Saban's scheme just as Steele did. I like Coach Smart, but I'm not sure UA should pay him this kind of money.

Well, I think learning and coaching with Saban's scheme has made him an outstanding DC. Same can be said with Kevin Steele and Will Muschamp.

If he goes to GA, it will be a dumb "career" decision. If he stays with us for one more year, he is a head coach the next year some where. If he goes to GA, and falls flat, bet you wont hear his name again just like Steele.

I agree with this. $$$ aside, a lateral move to a lesser program right now is very risky. What does he hope to gain? If UGA turns it around, Richt stays anyway and he is still stuck as a DC. IF UGA sucks and Richt is gone, do you think they give the HC to a first year DC as opposed to going after a higher profile name? What if he can't produce the same results with UGA's players? I just think it is a big mistake on his part.
