OK guys, you know me. My worry about the Auburn game started about a month ago. Serious question though. I wonder how we'll start out offensively.
I'll take the LSU game and the UTC as examples of my concern. Now I know we're talking a little bit different defenses here. Saban was hell bent on passing at the LSU game. I know he explained why, and after the game I totally understood. At the time I can't say I appreciated those 15 passes in a row when Ingram is sitting around not being used.
Flash forward to UTC. We start with Ingram out of wildcat and then attempt to pass unsuccessfully the remainder of that drive. Huh? Against UTC? Now, I'm thinking we didn't feel that we needed to open up the run by passing so I'm not quite sure of this philosophy. Maybe trying to get Greg comfortable against a UTC team that really wasn't going to force the issue? :headscratch:
I know it was just UTC, but we went 3 and out our 1st series. They won the toss, so our getting the ball first was wasted. No big deal as it turned out, BUT can we afford to start slow like that against Auburn? Again, no big deal that we didn't make that 1st down or score points on that drive because we scored 45 throughout the day. BUT, if we do that to Auburn and just give the ball back to them will they make us pay right away?
My concern is a slow start to an Auburn team that can score fast. My other concern is the play calling in the beginning of games lately (LSU, Miss. State and UTC). Do we really have to show pass to open up the run against these type teams? Maybe Miss. State, but AU and UTC? C'mon. I think I just read that Auburn is near the bottom of the SEC in rush defense. So, are we going to come out throwing against AU right away and possibly blowing early opportunities to run and wear them down?
I don't know; I know I'm making too big a deal out of all of this. I would just like for Ingram to set the tone early and often Friday. Is there any real need to get fancy? I don't know, maybe so. :headscratch:
