All I keep hearing from UGA fans and the Atlanta media is how UGA beat Florida and UF beat A&M, which beat Bama. They don't mention the beat down UGA got from South Carolina. I wanted to look at common opponents, and I didn't realize that we had so many in common. I dropped FAU and only kept the four SEC teams. Mizzou, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Auburn.

Here are the totals:
UGA
Gained 1945 Net Yards (748 rushing, 1115 passing)
Allowed 1321 Net Yards (479 rushing, 924 passing)
Scored 167 points
Allowed 74 points

UA
Gained 1860 net yards (987 rushing, 873 passing)
Allowed 792 net yards (254 rushing, 538 passing)
Scored 168 points
Allowed 37 points

The Tennessee game was supposed to be the best offense Bama had faced at that time. The Tide shut them down to 282 total yards and allowed 13 points. UGA had to win in a shoot out against the Vols giving up 478 yards and 44 points.

The offenses are close in total yards and points, but Alabama gave up around half of what UGA did in yards and points. Any thoughts? I know stats can lie both ways.

Adding one point to this which bears mentioning.

UGA hosted UT, Bama was on the road.

Let me say this. I wouldn't waste time talking to UGA fans this week. It will not lead anywhere but down.

However, if they did drop this one...

All I keep hearing from UGA fans and the Atlanta media is how UGA beat Florida and UF beat A&M, which beat Bama.

The ass kicking they received in Columbia by South Carolina—when they had all their suspended players back—was from a team that went to Baton Rouge and lost. It was a close ball game against LSU.

The team they are trying to downplay traveled to Baton Rouge...and you know how that story plays out.

So, if they want to look at common opponents let's look at the one team who they lost to, see who this team also lost to, and then start to make comparisons.

At least, now it's on a level playing field.

Now it doesn’t matter if you’re a Crimson Tide or Bulldog fan, these numbers show that on paper, Alabama has an edge in every key aspect of the game. Perhaps the most telling key is that Alabama only allows opponents to get to the red zone just an average of two times per game while Georgia allows opponents to get there an average of three times. Given the apparent equality of the offenses, that means Alabama will have at least 50% more scoring opportunities in the red zone than Georgia.Despite Richt’s 3-1 record against Alabama, he is just 2-3 against Saban head to head.

Personally as a sportswriter I’ve learned to go by history as well and Georgia has a history lately of choking on the big stage while Alabama seems to have the reputation of shining. Plus Alabama was one pass from being undefeated this season while was simply blown out by South Carolina 37-7 and thoroughly embarrassed.

Also keep in mind that Georgia is the 11th in the SEC at stopping the run and Alabama is number two in rushing offense. Combine that with the fact that Alabama also has the SEC’s number one pass defense and the Bulldogs will see a much better defense than the one that held them to just seven points earlier in the year.

Given a mixture of the stats you’ve just seen, the strength of schedule, the losses they took and just a gut feeling, Alabama should win by double digits in this SEC game.

It's a good stat but very poorly explained.

In real numbers, Georgia has allowed opponents in the red zone 38 times, Alabama 23. Out of those 38 times, UGA's opponent has scored 27 times, Bama's 14.
