Easily the worst game Bama played so far... Grayson Hitt's control issues continue to be an issue.... but it was contagious. Brock Blatter who relieved him had only walked 1 guy all season, and he walked 4 in 1 inning of work. Defense was not good either and they even had a baserunning error that may have run them out of a big inning. UA found itself in a 9-2 hole, and to their credit, battled back (had the winning run at the plate in the 9th). Will also say, Columbia is a pretty good team from what I saw. Their starting pitcher tonight is SEC level good, IMO.

And I've said this already, but I really wish Bohannon would slide Colby Shelton out of the leadoff spot. I'm not real sure what his thinking is there, but from the outside, it looks like he's overthinking and outsmarting himself.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball fought until the final out but came up short in a 10-7 loss to Columbia on Friday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The 18th-ranked Crimson Tide move to 14-1 on the season.

Despite trailing from the second inning on, Alabama never stopped battling. The Crimson Tide traded runs with the Lions all night and headed to the ninth down four. Alabama was able to plate one in the final frame and had the bases loaded with two down, but a difficult over the shoulder catch on the run by the Columbia shortstop went for the last out and the 10-7 final.

Alabama's offense recorded multiple home runs in the game, this time from Will Hodo and Caden Rose. Hodo finished with a team-high three hits and four RBI to go with a run scored, while Rose added an RBI, two runs and a walk to his line.

Columbia starter Andy Leon (2-1) got the win, allowing two runs on six hits across 5.0 innings pitched. Justin Tucker picked up the save for the Lions, working the final 0.2 of an inning. Alabama starter Grayson Hitt (2-1) suffered the loss.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon

"For as well as we played the first 14 games of the year, we were every bit as bad tonight. It was a really poor effort from our club. Give Columbia credit – we made mistakes and they did a really good job of making us pay for them. They got some big hits when they needed and executed some things offensively, made some nice defensive plays, and that's the story of the game."

How It Happened

  • T2 | A walk followed by a triple brought in the game's first run. A wild pitch in the next at-bat then allowed the man from third to score. (2-0, Columbia)
  • B3 | Tommy Seidl singled and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. He would come across to score one out later on an RBI-single from Will Hodo (2-1, Columbia)
  • T4 | The Lions walked and singled to put two aboard, with a double then scoring one and putting a pair in scoring position. A 4-3 groundout in the next at-bat plated one more and moved a man to third. After a second out was recorded, the Lions doubled to bring across another run in the frame. (5-1, Columbia)
  • B4 | Caden Rose lined a ball off the scoreboard in left for a solo home run. (5-2, Columbia)
  • T5 | A pair of walks put two on before a double steal resulted in a UA throwing error that allowed a runner to score and moved the other runner to third. After a walk, a 6-3 groundout helped the man from third cross. (7-2, Columbia)
  • T7 | The Lions added to their lead, scoring twice on a wild pitch and an RBI-single in the frame. (9-2, Columbia)
  • B7 | Ed Johnson led off with a walk before a Colby Shelton double put two aboard. Hodo cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run home run to cut into the CU advantage. (9-5, Columbia)
  • T8 | Hayden Schott recorded a solo home run to widen the gap. (10-5, Columbia)
  • B8 | With a runner at second and two down, Johnson tripled off the wall in left to add a run. (10-6, Columbia)
  • B9 | Shelton led off the inning with a walk before advancing to third on a 4-1 groundout and a wild pitch. A walk to Andrew Pinckney put two on for Drew Williamson, with the senior singling over the first baseman to score one. (10-7, Columbia)

Havent dug too deep into the OOC schedule, but from what I've seen, this is one of the weakest Ive seen in a while.

With some exceptions, it is mostly in line with the rest of the SEC leading up to league play from what I've seen. The conference slate for everyone is hard enough that there's not much need to beef it up a ton in Feb/March.

One thing I wish would catch on more (they do it some), is for baseball to have more of these early season 4 team weekend tournaments like they have a lot in college softball. Just 1 per season would be nice... whether on campus or at a neutral site somewhere like a minor league stadium. Something like Bama playing FSU, Tulane, and Southern Miss at MGM Park in Biloxi one weekend in early March would be awesome.

This is brutal. If it was a fight, the ref would have stopped it. Bama down 15-0 in the 4th. This entire series, UA has looked like the Tide teams of recent years… mental errors, fielding errors, and inconsistent pitching and hitting. To Columbia’s credit, they are absolutely crushing the ball, 1-9.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball split a doubleheader with Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the split, the 18th-ranked Crimson Tide is now 15-2 on the season.

The Crimson Tide came away with a 6-2 win in game one before a 15-3 loss in the nightcap.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon

"You got to give Columbia credit, they just kind of took it to us in the second game and did a really great job doing what we did the first 14 games this season. They were the aggressor. We get a day tomorrow to kind of catch our breath and get back on track next week."

GAME ONE

Alabama used a six-run fifth to provide all of its offense in a 6-2 win over Columbia in game one.

The Lions were first on the board with one in the third but a six-run fifth proved more than enough. That fifth included a two-run shot by Colby Shelton and a grand slam from Ed Johnson. Columbia was able to add one in the sixth but would get no closer.

Alabama starter Ben Hess (3-0) was solid in the start, picking up his third win of the season. The sophomore allowed one run on three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts across his 5.0 innings.

How It Happened

  • T3 | The Lions started the inning with a double before a groundout moved the leadoff man to third. The next CU batter sent a single up the middle for the game's first run. (1-0, Columbia)
  • B5 | Will Portera struck out to start the frame but a wild pitch allowed him to reach for Colby Shelton. The freshman proceeded to give the Tide the lead with a two-run home run to right. UA then loaded the bases up for Ed Johnson, with the second baseman hitting a ball into the playground area in left for a grand slam. (6-1, Alabama)
  • T6 | A pair of walks followed by a two-out single added one for the Lions. (6-2, Alabama)

Postgame Notes

  • Alabama's five grand slams this season are the most by a Tide offense during the 'dead bat' era (since 2011).

GAME TWO

The Crimson Tide fell, 15-3, in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday. Columbia put together an 11-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach for the series-clinching win.

Columbia starter Joe Sheets (1-0) got the win while reliever Derek Yoo picked up his first save. Alabama starter Jacob McNairy (2-1) suffered the loss.

How It Happened

  • T1 | A walk and a single put two on for the Lions before a double crossed a run and put two in scoring position. After a strikeout, a two-run double to right made it a three-run ballgame. (3-0, Columbia)
  • T3 | The Lions added one more with a sacrifice fly. (4-0, Columbia)
  • T4 | Eight hits and four free passes led to 11 runs for CU. (15-0, Columbia)
  • B4 | Colby Shelton led off the inning with a double and moved to third on an infield groundout. Andrew Pinckney followed with a sacrifice fly to score Shelton. (15-1, Columbia)
  • B5 | The Tide loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly from Will Hodo brought a run in. (15-2, Columbia)
  • B6 | With the bases loaded, a William Hamiter sac fly scored one. (15-3, Columbia)

Postgame Notes

  • Game two of the doubleheader marked the first contest the Tide has not homered in this season.
  • Caden Rose has reached base safely in his last 33 consecutive games dating back to April 25.
