šŸˆ Clowney: Saban's recruiting/system lead to signing with South Carolina

When Jadeveon Clowney was coming out of high school in Rock Hill,South Carolina in 2011, he was the consensus number one prospect in the nation and had every college coach vying for his services.

Ultimately Clowney narrowed his list to Alabama and South Carolina. While most recognize Nick Saban as possibly the greatest recruiter in the history of college football, Clowney found him boring, according to excerpts from ā€œSaban: The Making of a Coachā€ obtained by The State.

When Saban came to Clowney's home to give his recruiting pitch, the first thing the massive defensive end noticed was the coach's small stature.

ā€œI don’t see no big deal like everybody else. They’d say, ā€˜He’s the king of all of football.’ The guy ain’t nothing but 5-5. He’s a short guy. Everybody’s going crazy on Nick Saban."

Ouch. Clowney didn't stop there, as he also found the Crimson Tide's coach to be quite the bore.

ā€œHe talked the whole time he was there. I was dozing off. He can talk. A lot. He talked for a whole straight hour.ā€

Clowney also indicated he would have been more likely to sign with the Tide had the run his preferred 4-3 defensive alignment, as opposed to Saban's 3-4 scheme.

While Clowney's decision worked out for both parties, as the defensive end went on to become the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft following a 33-6 record at Carolina and Alabama went 36-4 in that same span, it's scary to think how dominant Clowney and the Tide would have been together.

Apparently Clowney has about the same ability to read people and their character as he does NFL offenses. So what if he's 5'5, Spurrier ain't tipping the scale in the height direction either. You can't win them all, but you can't help make fun of a dipshit 21 year old that talks about one of the greatest coaches ever as a "bore". I think his record, rings, and NFL draft picks say everything you need to know about the guy. Maybe Clowney dodges all the criticism of slacking if he came to Tuscaloosa and was forced to keep his motor running? Maybe he builds strength and more core strength to where he doesn't get injured. Have an opinion, but don't come off as pompous.

The Clown knew he'd have to work if he played for Saban. That's why he didn't sign with Alabama.

These entitled kids that are given grades, perks and a free ride. The ones that are told by every school how great they are and how much they are needed. They end up not wanting to give effort to get prepared and when they finally get to the NFL where everyone is supremely gifted and work their ass off too.. it becomes a rude awakening.

Guaranteed he saw Alabama all the competition he was gonna have to fight thru instead of it being given to him and how hard the other guys were working and pussed out. Guys like that expect you to give it to them and don't want to have to fight for what they feel you owe them for coming. He would have been a bad fit for Saban.. he made a good choice.

LOL, I doze off when I watch Clowney play football. How bad is that...

Dude has no heart, all he's heard is how great he is. He gives up on plays, gives only partial effort most of the time. Never understood the Clowney hype...I know he has a ton of potential, just hasn't lived up to it yet.

Perhaps JJ Watts can help him, but a big part of me thinks that if he hasn't learned how to be a pro at this point, I doubt he learns it in the NFL.

I knew this article seemed familiar. Have to wonder why folks are regurgitating quotes from an article from Feb 2011.

Nice find. Yep the reason this was recycled by someone I am sure is because its July and there is nothing to talk about in college football for another three weeks.

Also, If you are a writer and want to get attention say something bad about nick Saban or Alabama. Sucks but it's true

No matter if it was regurgitated, he's still an idiot. Mainly because after all of this, it was still between South Carolina and Alabama! If it was bad recruiting and a bad system how did it come down to us and Carolina for the #1 recruit that had a hundred total offers? He sure liked the idea of something.
