You and I typically see things the same way but maybe not so much on this subject. Thatās OK. Hereās more detail on why I said what I said. Weāre only in the beginning stages of what NIL money will do to the game. I hope youāre right and it doesnāt end up ādiminishing the quality and excitementā but Iād be shocked if that turns out to be the case. One of the reasons I love the college game is because every game counts. Once they expand the playoffs to twelve or even eight teams, the every game counts excitement will be diminished. The college game is also headed towards forming four mega conferences that will dramatically impact a lot of secondary rivalries that we Bama fans love. And those mega conferences formed from teams from the power five will break away to form their own college football organization. That organization will look more professionally oriented than amateur.
The transfer portal has already diminished the importance of recruiting. Now, add the NIL money into that equation and it will more resemble free agency ⦠again more like the NFL. On top of everything else, all of the money generated by TV contracts has made it possible for colleges to fire coaches with years left on their contracts in order to āstealā a winning coach who was supposedly already at his dream job (see Kelly and Riley). Iād be upset had I been a ND or Oklahoma fan.
Finally, GT F just imagine all of this was happening in the 80ās or late 90ās or early 2000ās when Bama wasnāt winning many games and Saban wasnāt winning a lot of championships. I seriously doubt weād be saying money wasnāt ruining the game we love. Saban has insulated us from feeling much of the pain all the changes we donāt like would have caused. And that I contend plays a big part inu what allows you to say the quality and excitement hasnāt been diminished.
