🏈 Cash sought for Cam Newton

Yep, I heard a Ted Roof interview today (lucky me). It was the first time I heard anyone from Auburn say "no comment" to "is Cam playing tomorrow" question. Of course then I come home to find out that's the party line as of now.

Cecil Newton admits talking about money with former MSU players but says Cam and Auburn are clean...

http://www.wsbtv.com/sports/25778803/detail.html

and of course, we all believe him because we are stupid. Please, obviously he's done nothing but lie up until this point. The Auburn and Cam are clean stuff is just more lies.

Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. (Not the story, the fact that Cecil is such an ass)

The nerve of an Auburn fan to come on this site and start chastising us for poking fun at Auburn. If you can't handle it, go back to your own message boards. Nobody asked you to come here.

EDIT: I will back-track here. I was in a horrible mood this morning and became what I despise ("that" kind of fan on our boards) and for that I apologize. Ordinarily I would've laughed the comment off and went about my way, obviously this morning that judgement was lacking. No excuses, no explanations.

Although for the record, I do not claim anything from '04 other than the SEC title

According to the ncaa, the mere solicitation of extra benefits renders a player ineligible. According to an "expert" on a sports show. With Cecil admitting this, it is only a matter of time before TSHTF. Since Bama is eliminated from the NC race..........I have found myself wanting da barn to win it all.............................................then watch it all taken away from them and get crippled with sanctions.

My guess would be we end up sitting Cam which greatly reduces the chance of making it to Glendale.

It is noted in the article that the guy attended Auburn and remains active in the liberal arts department. Another aside, he also used to write for "The Plainsmen". I sincerely doubt this is another sensationalized piece of journalism. Granted, it still cites a "source" but I have a hard time believing an Auburn grad, still active with the university, would quote bogus stats.

I was wrong for defending Cecil and I will eat my crow. Cecil Newton is apparently an absolute ass. I sincerely hope he is telling the truth and that Cam and Ms. Newton didn't know anything about it although given his track record...

At this point my only hope is that Cam didn't know, which looks increasingly doubtful and that "discussing" and "soliciting" are different in the eyes of the NCAA. Also doubtful.

Not chastising you for poking fun at Auburn--at this point this is a twenty-five page thread mostly mocking Auburn. I simply pointed out an ironic statement. I didn't attack any of the posters, simply noted the irony of someone mocking Auburn for claiming titles that no one credits them with. I also referenced the fact the university claims one.

Nothing I said was untrue or hostile, with the exception of the reference to the 41 title which yes, crossed a line being that I am on a Bama board and for that I apologize.

What the hell do you mean "Didn't know". of course he KNEW.
Before Cam Newton committed to Auburn, one of the Mississippi State recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take “more than a scholarship” to land his son, the ESPN.com report said. The recruiter said the school would not be willing to do that. After committing to Auburn, Cam Newton phoned another recruiter and said his father had chosen Auburn because “the money was too much,” according to ESPN.com.

Allow me to paraphrase that statement:
As in daddy says i can't go to play for Coach Mullen cause they won't pay and Auburn will, and the money Auburn is offering is too much to pass up.
Sounds to me like he knew every damn thing.

:panic:I hear ya!!!!! He knew something. Had to.

I said hope! It is possible he knew.

The only thing that really seems fishy about the Cam phone call to MSU is why he wouldn't call Mullen. His sense of loyalty was to Coach Mullen, not the school. Calling another "recruiter" and being upset and apologizing just doesn't add up to me. Again, I'm not saying definitely Cam didn't know about any kind of discussion about money. But it seems if he were going to call and apologize to anyone it would've been Coach Mullen. A good friend of mine that was in the band at Bama (the Orange Bowl year, actually) called me today and asked that very same question. I can't say with any certainty it did or didn't happen. But it just seems like it would've been Mullen he called.

This is flea'd from one of the mods over on AUF in re: a Bama fan quoting the ESPN statement earlier that the solicitation, even in the absence of improper benefits, constitutes a violation:

Bama fan: "First off I feel bad for all you Auburn guys it's not fair that y'all have to go through this bs. All I'm saying is that I saw ESPN quote the NCAA Today saying that its a violation if a someone attempts to gain improper benefits for an individuals, even if no money was actually exchanged, or even if the player knew about it. So even if it was with Mississippi State and Auburn had no contact, Cam Newton could be declared ineligible. It all rests on if Cecil did really try to get money."

TitanTiger (also a member here): "Not exactly. ESPN did you a disservice. It was explained in much more detail on Finebaum and elsewhere by lawyers familiar with the NCAA rule and process on these things. It is technically a violation but not all violations result in loss of eligibility. It's a case by case thing. For instance, if a person asked for or discussed improper benefits but no money changed hands and the matter was dropped for whatever reason and that's all there was to it, you're not likely going to see them sit a player. If someone was out there shopping him all over the place, starting a bidding war with potential suitors and so on...that's a whole other degree and probably would."

So, according to Finebaum, attorneys, etc it is possible that Cam's eligibility may not be in question. It is also possible that this is something the NCAA/SEC already know. It seems like daily we are hearing something newly reported that they already know, who knows. All of that being said, I am now actually anxious and I'm pissed at Cecil and if Cam did actually know, pissed at him also. It is a damn shame that any possibility exists that the young men on this team may have 8-9 months worth of hard work erased because of one selfish dad or one selfish dad and his selfish son.

What I do know for sure, Cecil Newton is apparently a magnificent b--tard. I'm sure you get the meaning; I'm not sure how the mods feel about profanity.

Even though Cam had a relationship with Mullen, a head coach would/should always delegate the dirty work to a subordinate. The logic being that if the worst happens and someone finds out - you can always fire a subordinate and claim you knew nothing. There is still a lot of speculation out there right now. But, obviously, Cecil's admission isn't good for Auburn fans and I would be very surprised at this point if Auburn comes out of this thing unscathed.

I really have mixed feelings about this whole thing. As a fan of an Alabama program with their own recent NCAA issues, I admit it's entertaining to see 'the Barn' fans suffering a little. And a lot of your own posts DO have a smarmy tone. At the same time, I can't help but feel a little bad for any college football fans who may be looking down the barrel of the NCAA's shotgun of wrath.

Whatever happens from here on out, a lot of damage has already been done to Auburn's image. Cam will probably still win the Heisman unless they get this thing resolved in the next couple of weeks. And, I'm not sure that sitting him out for Georgia or Alabama would help anything at this point and would probably even make it worse. They might as well take their chances and go 'all in' at this point.

Fair enough.
