SEC Sports

Caesar's Sportsbook released its initial over/under figures on total wins for college football teams in the 2022 season and Texas A&M's mark was set at 8.5 victories. This trails only Georgia (over/under of 11.5 wins) and Alabama (over/under of 11.0 wins) within the Southeastern Conference and is tied with Kentucky from the SEC East. The rest of the SEC West lines up as follows: Ole Miss (7.5 wins), LSU (7.0 wins), Arkansas (7.0 wins), Mississippi State (6.5 wins), and Auburn (6.0 wins). A&M is at -170 on the over and +145 on the under. Among their first three opponents, Miami also has an over/under of 8.5 wins and and SEC East opponents Florida and South Carolina have over/unders of 7.0 and 6.0 wins, respectively.

This got me to looking at the entire 2022 CFB schedule(s). Is it my imagination, or does the Week 0 schedule increase every year? I thought games allowed in this week were limited to games played outside of the US or games involving Hawaii and/or opponents of Hawaii. There are 11 games on the schedule in 2022 with 8 of them being those such games. I'm scratching my head over the other three. Two of them are actually Conference USA conference games. Why are those allowed? The third, Florida A&M at UNC, is mind boggling. Why would a P5 school host a FCS opponent in Week 0? And why is that allowed?

They must have some kind of permission under the rules. I'm not sure, haven't delved into the rules, but that's what it looks like.
If it wasn't, the P5 school couldn't do it.

@252BAMA I'll have to make time to look more closely at each schedule to see how far this carries. I noticed several of the teams that have Week 0 games don't get the second bye week that the Hawaii trip affords. (Vandy does.) I looked at several and see breaks of six days and eight days—largely as a result of Thursday and Friday games—but don't see any of those I've looked through have two, true open weekends.

They're adding more because it's been a ratings bonanza—there's no competition for sports viewers that weekend.

Actually the Hawaii opponents get the option of scheduling an extra game or taking two bye weeks. Only one, WKU, is playing the extra game in 2022. In order to exercise either option, the school must play in Week 0 which they are allowed to do by virtue of being on the Hawaii schedule. Five of the 2022 Hawaii opponents chose not to schedule in Week 0, therefore they get neither the extra game nor the extra bye week.

Home or away games for those five?
I always thought that was a factor in the rule and you are correct. All five of those are playing Hawaii at home. Hawaii's sixth away opponent, New Mexico State has the extra bye week because they are playing Nevada in Week 0. They are allowed to do so because Nevada is a Hawaii home opponent.

Bottom line is, to be allowed to schedule in Week 0, a school must be playing in Hawaii or playing an opponent that does play in Hawaii.

Or be selected for the TV audience. (Was it Illinois vs Nebraska last season? I think it was.)

It's not limited to just Hawaii (though that appears to be a conditional with getting a 13th game/extra bye week team.)

What I don't recall is this ...

The Week Zero thing started with ESPN petitioning the NCAA for a game during the celebration of the 150th year of college football. Did the Hawaii waiver start before then?

Oh, I know it's not just Hawaii. In my original comment I stated outside of the US or Hawaii. The waiver has been in effect for as long as I can remember. The 150th year was 2019. Bama used the waiver in 2002 and 2003.

...specifically referring to it being associated with week zero. Curiosity, I can easily look. When was the first Wk 0 game? I know it was associated with the holiday weekend and I want to say it was also marking another event. I don't recall. It was a kickoff classic titled special. Did that first game have other games on the same weekend (Hawaii teams?)

Hawaii has been allowed to play an extra game since 1985 and they did play the same weekend as the Kickoff Classic. That game ran from 1983-2002 and was always played in what is now called Week 0. The Hawaii Waiver began in 1971 when Hawaii began playing football.

Yes, because they will not prepare for the first 5 games. As in 2021. Scored in the last minute to beat Colorado. 4-8 Colorado! Lost to Arkansas and MSU.

You guys will have to forgive me for all the scheduling posts. It has always been of great interest to me and became obsessive in 1992 when Roy Kramer took over the SEC scheduling and began screwing Alabama while favoring ut. Every. Damn. Year.

It led to the 6 byes in 2010, and believe it or not, although long retired, he was responsible for that. How you ask? Because he made out the first two schedules in 10 year bundles. 1992-2001 and 2002-2011. He retired in 2002 after submitting the second bundle to the membership in 2001.

Looking at the PAC this morning....love the observations.

Ever since the Pac went to 9 conference games I have checked out their schedules to see which of them would be receptive to a future away game without requiring a return game. In hopes that the Bama AD was doing the same and would schedule one of them.
