šŸˆ Bulldogs eager to avenge 2012 SEC title game loss

Two of the SEC’s winningest programs will square off this season for the first time since Alabama stopped short a last-minute drive by Georgia to hang on and win the 2012 SEC Championship.

Despite their storied histories, the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs have met on the gridiron only 15 times in the past 42 years, including just five times since 2002. This year the two square off during the regular season for the first time since the Tide won, 41-30, in Athens in 2008.

Georgia and Alabama are the preseason picks to win their respective divisions, so Alabama’s Week 5 game in Athens, Georgia, could be a preview of the SEC title game matchup.

3 things to know about Georgia

Chubb factor: There was no growth period with Nick Chubb, who immediately broke onto the scene last season to finish second in the SEC in rushing with 1,547 yards as a true freshman. Filling in when former No. 1 tailback Todd Gurley was suspended for four games midway through last season and then tore his ACL in his first game back against Auburn. During that time, Chubb finished the 2014 season with 8 straight 100-yard rushing games, including a pair of 200-yard games (with a season-high 266 yards against Louisville). With the team breaking in a new starting quarterback, the offense will likely go through Chubb early and often, potentially setting up a running back showdown with Alabama’s Derrick Henry when they meet in Week 5.

No mo’ Bobo: While players came and went, Mike Bobo remained a constant, guiding Georgia’s pro-style offense for the past seven seasons as offensive coordinator. Prior to that he was quarterback coach for six seasons. But now he’s moved on as a first-time head coach at Colorado State, where he takes over for new Florida head coach Jim McElwain. In Bobo’s place as Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator is Brian Schottenheimer, who comes to the collegiate ranks after 14 years in the NFL, carrying on the pro-style approach that has worked so well for Georgia under head coach Mark Richt. How well the offense transitions under Schottenheimer could mean all the difference if Georgia is able to return to the SEC title game for the first time since 2012.

Pruitt part 2: It’s Year 2 of the Jeremy Pruitt era and Georgia’s defense looks to continue it’s upward progress following a successful first season. Last year, after Pruitt took over for Todd Grantham, the Bulldogs’ defense improved by an average of more than a touchdown per game, limited opponents to 11 fewer touchdowns and was nearly 500 total yards better than in 2013. While there is always turnover, Georgia returns its entire secondary and both outside linebackers to give what was a weakness in 2014 — pass defense — into a potential strength, in Year 2 under Pruitt, whose pass defense led the ACC in 2012-13 as FSU’s defensive coordinator.

If I'm a UGA fan I'm thinking about two losses last year—to two bad teams in their own division no less—more than I'm thinking about a loss in ATL in 2012, right?

If you're rational fan maybe.... my sister is an UGA and also thinks this season is title or bust even though she's a NYC hipster now.

UGA and AU are the biggest threats and then 1 darkhorse somewhere. My honest opinion is JAWJA will have a rough time running the ball as they please on our front seven. They will have to find a way to pass and with the dumpster fire they have at QB i dunno.

Never forget ..

Highly doubt more than 2% of the Georgia fanbase is rational. They are king's of pre-season hype, and always pull a Clemson.

On a side note, anyone please let me know of any leads to tickets to this game. I want Lower Level tickets and I am looking for two, four, or six together. Basically sets of two since my wife and I are Alabama, and everyone else are Georgia fans, so I am looking to take members of my family as a family day.

I hope you can go! Give 'em hell

IMO Georgia has the most annoying fans in the conference, and that's including the Barners. I've never enjoyed being around the vast majority of Georgia fans. Also, they all have this sense of entitlement at every sport. You would think you'd eventually have to win something to be that freaking smug.

If it was still a Richt/Bobo combination we do know. I do think we'll see if the influence and development with their QB position has come from Richt or Bobo.

I don't know what to think about Brian Schottenheimer. I get the same kind of feeling as I did when Scot Loeffler was trying his hand in the SEC (and we saw how that worked out as well.)

YES. Living in Atlanta, I've had my fill of uga fans. They insist that they are among the best two or three programs in the nation, yet haven't won a national championship since the Iran hostages were freed.

They're even obnoxious baseball fans. I didn't think that was possible. LSU has rowdy fans, but they are usually nice folks. Most Georgia fans would seem to benefit by a swift kick in the behind.

Dawg fans use the "if" word as much as the damn longhorn fans. They are no doubt the most arrogant SEC fans without anything to be arrogant about..

they should use the "if" word for their coach. "if we had a different/better coach, then we'd probably have an SEC championship or maybe even a national championship by now."

of course they'll never admit that. they love him when he recruits and before and during the first part of the season, but after that they hate him him. it's like they're all schizophrenic.
