🏈 Black quarterbacks at Alabama

You summed it up perfectly. I'm a northerner but I totally agree! I find folks up here are much more obsessed with race and stereotyping the south. I find the comments insufferable when I tell folks how much I love the state of Alabama and the people and the food and the football etc etc. it's my favorite place and even though I'm a Philly native, I defend it (except Auburn) like I'm Alabama born and bred. My dad's ancestors do hail from the south originally so maybe that's it :)

No mistake about it then. It's in your blood. :)

Your right Philly about the prejudices in the north. I now live in Michigan and they are more obsessed about razzing me about Alabama than they are at supporting Mich. or Mich. state. Some Mich. state people still hate Saban and I think that's hilarious. The women though, have another stereotype for me just 'cause I'm from the south and I think that's funny also., but I'm getting way off course. I find there is just as many or more "rednecks" near where I live than in the whole state of Alabama. Suffice it to say that most of my fondest memories of Alabama football is due to black players and /or what the team accomplished. That is all I'm going to say on this subject.

Couple of thoughts: (1) There are white Alabama fans who secretly don't want a black Tide QB, period, regardless of ability, but there are people of this mindset everywhere (not just at Alabama) and the people who think this way are not in charge of recruiting or player development at Alabama. (2) The absence of prominent black quarterbacks at Alabama is part and parcel of a larger problem, namely that Alabama has not produced an NFL caliber QB, of any skin color, over the past approximately 30 years. Richard Todd (circa 1982) was the last Bama product/NFL starter of any note, and Kenny Stabler (circa 1970) was the last truly great Alabama quarterback. So, by force of logic, if we are not producing starter NFL quarterbacks, at all, then we are not producing any black ones, which perhaps gives rise to the perception that we are not giving black quarterbacks a chance.

^^ This is true I've heard the "black QBs aren't smart enough" argument from people in the past unfortunately and I dont mean the distant past. My dad used to have that same mindset which is embarrassing but the many amazingly black QBs that have invaded football over the last 15 or so years has changed his mind completely. Michael Vick is his favorite player to watch, I mean its hilarious to see the man crush he has on Vick. He was actually more interested in Winston's recruitment than I was and he was devastated when he signed with FSU and is still bitter about it (so am I) lol Hes been cheerleading Blake Sims and the hope that he gets a chance to start because of his athleticism and mobility.

As far as the NFL QBs go Greg and Brodie have started... but I think AJ is gonna change that perception in the next few years.

The past is the past. Whether or not we've had black quarterbacks isn't relevant to his argument. He says we don't actively recruit black quarterbacks and won't play them now.

It's hard to believe that he doesn't know who our head coach is, and that would be the only plausible explanation for his argument. Because if he knows Nick Saban is coaching a Bama, (and I think it's a safe bet that he does) he also knows that if we haven't had a black quarterback since 2007 it's because our best quarterbacks have been white. Saban wants to win, and there is no way in hell he'd sit a black quarterback who gave us a better chance at winning. Furthermore, Can anyone really believe that Saban would allow some big money booster(s) to dictate what he puts on the field? If there ever was a day that some good ole boy with deep pockets had a say so in who played what position for Alabama, it hasn't happened in the last 6 seasons.

Every one of your post has been spot on. Please post more.

I guess some folks are just obsessed with skin color, be it black, white, brown, green, blue, whatever instead of how a guy can actually PLAY.

For example, take a look at this gem.

Here is a look at the other side of college football .. Folks who are convinced that it is white people who are being overlooked and under-recruited, and being passed over by less qualified black athletes.

"It is only since the late 1980s that certain positions in professional football have become for all intents and purposes black only.Might there be other factors involved? For example, did you know that the 119 major college football programs, with very few exceptions, simply refuse to recruit and develop white tailbacks and white receivers no matter how outstanding they are in high school? And that the media enforces this rigid segregation by using euphemisms and descriptions that demean white athletes?

Talented white athletes who want to play tailback, receiver or cornerback must go to a small college program or go the very difficult route of becoming a walk-on at one of the major programs. And since it is the major college football programs that supply almost all the players in the NFL, it is hardly surprising that the white running back and wide receiver has become almost extinct, as have whites playing defense in general.

The truth is that white football players, no matter how talented, are directed into a racial Caste System that limits them to being offensive linemen, kickers, quarterbacks (though more and more major college programs are recruiting blacks for that position), and the occasional defensive position, usually linebacker or defensive end."

"Please give this info to White players you know or their family/friends so they can choose teams that may give them a decent chance!"

"The Georgia football program left me.....I didn't leave them. That's why I'm pulling for Boise State, hoping that the SEC will stop the insanity of its current recruiting practices. I mean, seriously, its like watching HBCU teams these days.....with 95% of the fans being white....its really pathetic."

"It took me a while to realize New Miss had left me many years ago, and it is definitely pathetic to see the SEC DWFs [Dumb White Fans: applied to perceived predominantly white fanbases who root for perceived predominantly black teams, or that is my take away based on skimming this forum for a bit] literally live for "their" bank full of negroes."

There is even a thread for the Tide.

So here, we have a forum that chastises the SEC (which they believe stands for 'Systematically Excluding Caucasians') for being too BLACK lol. Why, why, why are people so obsessed with the color of a man's skin rather than his play on the field???

It looks like no one can win. Too much of this type, or, not enough of this type. To me I'm the type that if anyone wearing the Crimson & White is one. Yes, I too think that the Yankee or more racist than most of the people down here in the south. I lived a year in NJ with my wife.

Oh god you discovered castefootball... I got into a hilarious argument with one of their writers after that fool said that Matt Jones (former Arky QB and Jaguars receiver) was the best receiver in the NFL and someone sent me the link. Those people are the most delusional people in the world.

It made me depressed browsing some of their threads .. :icon_confused:

Like rick4bama said, the only colors I care about are the colors on their jerseys (and thank god the Tide are not Oregon with enough colors to make a person's eyeballs bleed!). ROLL TIDE!!!! :a::a::a:

^^ Good lord no. He was athletic as hell but the guy was never even a receiver before he got to the NFL and was constantly in trouble. This was post cocaine arrest by the way they were saying he was the best receiver in the league...

Philly check out that Alabama thread there again... someone just made a new post... and yes I registered there just so I could troll them... :)

Like I said, ton of potential, he certainly had the skills to be a good one, just needed the work ethic and drive. He played basketball at Arkansas too, he had the hands.

I remember reading this article about him when he was entering the draft, good read by the way. I'll never forget seeing him run around in the backfield thinking, how is a guy that big moving so damn quick. Speaking of fun QB's to watch, how about Jared Lorenzen at Kentucky since its Kentucky week :)
