🏈 Black players @ Mizzou strike (UPDATE: Bill proposed in legislature, "you strike, you're out.")

Guess they need an excuse for not making it to Atlanta to get their asses kicked.

Their demands, they've lost their minds. Hire people based on merit, not their skin color. Why in the world would students have a say in the school president.

I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1950 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1950 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.

II. We demand the immediate removal of Tim Wolfe as UM system president. After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.

III. We demand that the University of Missouri meets the Legion of Black Collegians' demands that were presented in 1969 for the betterment of the black community.

IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.

V. We demand that by the academic year 20172018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campuswide to 10%.

VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.

VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals; particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campuswide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.

VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campuswide awareness and visibility.

So wait. They are going on strike because there isn't enough black professor and the president isnt black? They want mental health care professionals but only black ones? Curriculum on racial awareness? Oh everybody is aware that the people making these demands are very racist.

WTF is a legion of black collegians? So they just make up organization from existing organizations by adding the word black to it? This is college kids? Getting college educations, claiming oppression? Geezus I'm not saying all black ppl are stupid but it appears this group is

I'm not exactly sure how something like this works, but I know student athletes receive their scholarship money at the beginning of each semester. These boys may have been better suited waiting until that starts, before the football coach decides to cut their $ and reward some walk on's who are willing to practice and play with their teammates.

While I definitely understand their frustrations, and definitely believe they have a right to express them (within reason), one has to wonder if they would be so quick to protest in this manner if Mizzou was in playoff contention.

However .. Mizzou's president/administration absolutely needs to stand up and take a stand against the recent instances of racism on campus.

Systematic racism, whether perceived or actual, does not exactly endear you to a diverse student population.

You can't help perception, because that'S simply someone'S thoughts. I think we have all seen enough crazy ideas and thoughts from society today where facts and ideals are ignored, so in actuality you can't even count perception as any kind of indicator. Always know there will always be a group that wants to bitch about an issue. There will never be a time where 100% of people are happy.

I would be bitching too if my university president did not adequately address recent racist incidents on campus.

It helps to remember that this is taking place in Missouri, which has seen its fair share of race-related incidents over the past year or two. People are on edge as it is. It's the president's job to be sensitive to these matters and to at least try to address such occurrences on his home turf.

This is Higher Ed administration 101 kind of stuff ..

Once again, there is no possible way to make everyone happy. You use the term 'being sensitive', yet we have a group 'demanding' things while being offered a free education. Not to mention most were allowed to school due to 'sensitive' lowered requirements. I'm not saying ignore these people or turn a cold shoulder to their concerns, but acting solely on their threat is not how you go about solving an issue. Simply look at government and international threats. Black perception of America will never be the same as white perception, and you will never get a consistent perception from within the black race because there are many different views based on the many different backgrounds and upbringings. Perception is a thought, not fact, so hard to use that in an argument.

The article timeline that's linked above doesn't support any of their demands. Two individuals are alleged to have used a racial slur in separate incidents when the only witnesses were those planning to demonstrate? If there were rampant incidents of overt racism on or around that campus, I would think there would be tons of evidence. Their ambush of the college president during homecoming parade was bush league as well, and now they want his head because he didn't respond the way they would have liked when he was ambushed.

It's crap they are demanding hiring quotas, period. Hire and promote on merit. As to the players, if they choose to not participate in football activities they are well within their rights to do so. If the University chooses to rescind their scholarships for their non-participation, they are well within their rights to do so as well.

"perceived" systematic racism? If it's not actual, isn't it in the court of the perceived offended to learn reality instead of being wrong in their perceptions?

RTR,

Tim

Their ambush of the college president during homecoming parade was bush league as well,

Since Mizzou has been in the SEC, doing things (or saying things) that are bush league has become common place. From coaches all the way down to players ... there's a serious disconnect around that program. I know @planomateo and I have been talking about bush league actions/comments there since the day Bama softball had a "dog pile" after winning the SEC and their coach called our team "bush league."
