bear facts mando clip of the week (any genre)

Here's Mississippi native, Marty Stuart, paying homage to his late friend and one-time father-in-law, Johnny Cash, with his song "Dark Bird."

Be sure to check out Stuart's mando solo at the 5:05 mark; he's improvising from his song, "The Pilgrim: Act III," and bits and pieces of other tunes.

What a signature sound he gets with that thang! Unmistakably Marty.

I've showcased Mr Richter's talents before, with him paying tribute to Led Zeppelin, mandolin-style.

Now he's gonna entertain you with his mando reendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel."

And here Richter performs "Little Wing" on an octave mandolin.

Here's a little sing-along to get your vocal cords loosen up for the Iron Bowl.

I just wonder how many of you can hit that note near the 2:18 mark? :D

Folks, I apologize for not posting as regular as I used to--irons in other fires right now.

Anyway, I wanted to dedicate this post to Butch Baldassari, well-respected mandolinist and teacher of the instrument who passed away last month after a courageous 20-month battle with an inoperable brain tumor.

Here's a link with Butch's bio information:

Here's a link to a collection of youtube vids featuring Butch. The mandolin world has lost a remarkable human being and musician:

For any of you beginning mandolin players, Butch Baldassari has some great instructional dvds out on Homespun Video. Here's a sample of Butch as mandolin instructor:

And here's a tribute to Butch from a banjo picker:

I'm sure wiseace has been busy with a new young'un, but I know this gal's music is like a Siren's song to his ears. Maybe this will lure him over to say howdy.

It appears like I've got some cleaning up to do with the links on this thread since the site donned its new look. Be patient. I'll get to it eventually . . .

hey bearfacts, we have a section as well for your videos in the video section so feel free to add there as well

Thanks Doemasters for the heads up. I'll check it out.

In the meantime, I reckon it's time to break down (no pun intended) and post a little banjo music--just to add a little variety and make Bama66 tap his toe a time or two.

Enjoy!

New Monsoon & Honkytonk Homeslice playing together at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado.

Nice little mando solo around the 1:30 mark.

What I would give to have a tad of that talent. :frown:

That's just scary at how effortless that looks to her.

I enjoyed the videos, Factor!

Glad I could oblige, BayBear.

I thought I would showcase a man & band that could put on quite a bluegrass show. Had the pleasure to see this gentleman perform at a festival outside Durham, NC, in the summer of 2002. Bill Monroe may be the Father of Bluegrass but Jimmy Martin was the King of Bluegrass.

I apologize for the subject of this first song but the tune is kinda catchy and the mando player is from Arab, Alabama.

This next one is probably my favorite Jimmy Martin song--"Freeborn Man."

I liked both of those clips, Factor, but I am starting to wonder if I have lived in Tennessee too long. Is the Tennessee twang rubbing off on me?

I have a clip I'd like to add for you that I ran across while watching some Boston Pops youtube videos. I had wanted to see the Boston Pops for a long time, and I finally got the chance to see them last year. It was an amazing symphony hall. Very beautiful. This particular clip I found on youtube is a familiar song, but it has a nice little mando clip about halfway through I thought you might enjoy.

First, I must admit I felt a jolt of jealous when I read that you had the opportunity to see the Boston Pops in person.

As far as the videos you posted--great stuff, BayBear! I have not seen those Ricky Skaggs clips, so I really appreciate you sharing them. RS is a true ambassador for both traditional & contemporary bluegrass music and has discovered a lot of great new talent--Take his fiddle player, Andy Leftwich, for instance--he's one heck of a young mando player, too.

Skaggs is also the one who signed the following group, the Cherryholmes, to his record label and they go on to garner a few IBMA music awards.

The earlier Ricky Skaggs clips that BayBear posted jogged my memory about Andy Leftwich. Not only does he stand in as Skaggs fiddle player with the Kentucky Thunder, AL is accomplished at the mando himself:
