Today marks 33 years since his death, but I just came across this post ..

The Sometimes Suspect Sartorial Splendor of Bear Bryant

The Sometimes Suspect Sartorial Splendor of Bear Bryant

Paul W. Bryant could be more than a little preoccupied about his personal appearance. From insisting on favorable lighting when filming The Bear Bryant Show to the face lift he underwent in the early 80s, Bryant knew the camera would be on him a lot and wanted to look presentable for it.

And from his years as a student at Alabama, Bryant had a penchant for dressing well. That carried over to his gameday apparel when he became a head coach. Throughout the 60s he mixed solid-colored blazers, sweatervests and brown fedoras for a winning combination. Yet as much as Bryant dominated college football in the 1970s, the decade certainly had its revenge on the Bear.

Fashion of that era wasn't exactly at its apogee and viewing any episode of Here's Lucy or Dean Martin's Celebrity Roast will attest it was particularly cruel to sexagenarians. Like many of his era, plaid and polyester conspired against Bryant and lets not even talk about some of the houndstooth foisted on him in his later years.

So here are six outfits that only Bryant could get away with wearing because... well, he was The Bear.

Seersucker-esque

The fedora may have been stolen from Tom Landry's wardrobe but that jacket almost certainly came with a free mint julep. The outfit has lines going so many directions it can make you a bit dizzy if you look at it too long.

The Living Room Sofa

Colorwise, this one actually kind of works. The problem is it looks exactly like that sofa your parents had when you were a kid. You remember, the one where the dark lines were the roadway for your Matchbox cars.

The Herb Tarlek

The only thing that would make this absolutely perfect would be if he was wearing a white belt and white and white shoes. And Loni Anderson, of course.

Monochrome Madness

Not many people know that Bryant was on the front of the curve when it came to ska music and fashion. Somewhere a young Ranking Roger saw this ensemble and was inspired to found The Beat.

The Picnic Tablecloth

The fact that matters here is that the jacket is not pink. And we'll cut anyone who suggests it is. Which is ironic since polyester that thick could probably stop a knife bla

Oysters Rockefeller

Sure it looks like something you'd be served at Antoine's but this jacket was actually an early experiment in Magic Eye technology. Stare at it long enough and you can see the words "Furman Bisher is an asshat."

They then took a poll to see which outfit was the viewer's least favorite .. this was the top answer:

Are you kidding? It's Bear Bryant. Whatever the man wore was superb.

When I see houndstooth and Alabama, I have to chuckle a little bit because most of the Pictures with the Bear's hats were checkerboard. Was there a hat that looked like houndstooth? You always see the ones he wore were like these. When did someone use the black houndstooth.

Okay but thats not what you said lol
I am sorry I intended to say "When did someone use the little black houndstooth".

Can someone in the house please stand up and answer the question and not be my poor grammar and English teacher?

When did someone start using the little pattern houndstooth. I can't find any examples of hats that he wore, but here is a houndstooth boot for you.@Birdman37

Thanks for that article. I have read it before but it doesn't answer the question. Why the little houndstooth vs the big houndstooth. Why was that adopted to be black and white instead of the grey and other color patterns in some of his hats. I guess I am just looking at the details too much. Houndstooth by definition has a lot of variations as all the pictures of hats he wore does.

@Birdman37 I hope your feelings are OK. I meant the boot as a joke.:D

Bear is wearing the "little" houndstooth pattern on the 1966 SI cover. I believe that's the hat he received from NY Jets owner.

If your question is why do the majority of the retail items today have smaller vs. larger patterns then its probably due to a supply and demand thing. If larger patterns sold better than smaller then you'd likely see more of them. Maybe people just prefer the smaller pattern. I'm not sure that question's really answerable unless you were to do a little more research. If its that important to you, I say have at it. Let us know what you find out.

^That is basically what I said earlier. I think the peeps see the smaller print as more fashionable. Now, only old farts like Bill and hipsters would wear the hat anywhere except at a game.

That is obviously a great photoshop pic. It still doesn't answer my original question. I will try to find out more information about it. All natural pictures of the Bear have the larger houndstooth or checkerboard square.

It was from a photoshoot with Sports Illustrated, why the hell would they photoshop a different hat on his head?

Well they wouldn't have photoshoped it because photoshop wasn't around then. They just colored it in that way. Find another picture with that hat. I have looked all over the internet. The only thing I can think of is that small houndstooth got favor from the BAMA logo Queens from being too cool for school.

Also the houndstooth is a fairly recent event like when the twins started wearing the hats. It caught on and maybe it was just coincidence.
