šŸ“” Police close 'The Strip' Over Rowdy Visitors After Alabama's A-Day - Tuscaloosa Thread

Police in Tuscaloosa have closed the Strip after crowds in the bar-and-restaurant-filled district near the University of Alabama campus got too rowdy on Saturday afternoon.

Police said at 6 p.m. on Saturday that the Strip would be closed and would remain closed for the rest of Saturday night "to maintain public order."

Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner blamed out-of-towners for the disruption in Tuscaloosa after A-Day, saying the troublemakers were coming from Lipscomb, Bessember, Ensley, Hale County, and elsewhere into the city to "cause crap" after the spring scrimmage in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

It's not the first time this has happened - large crowds and people with guns have caused the Strip to shut down after several A-Day games in recent years.

TPD said no one is allowed on the street and vehicle traffic is closed in multiple directions. Everyone who was on the Strip should find somewhere else to be, and those planning to go there will have to wait until Sunday.

Says it's happened several times after A day. Does it happen after games as well or is it the difference in the ticket paying crowd vs the free crowd?

If you pull up the A-day thread from last spring a few of us talked about it briefly. For the lack of a better description, picture the teen "street takeover gangs" without the mopeds. It's part of the same ilk who have created the restrictions you see in spring break destinations.

Using Internet slang, "the Amish."

I've seen stories about some of the kids trying to break into the dorms last night. I don't know if it's true. I know a few parents who told there kids, "stay home." The same parents did the same things last year. It's a scene you would avoid knowing how it will likely end.

Please forgive me for being blunt. The situation could be reduced if not solved with a lot of arrests, clubs & rubber bullets.

To hell with being ā€œcivilā€. Some people only understand pain. When your actions put other people in danger, then violence is called for.

I was helping my daughter do prom photos at the Federal courthouse this past Friday evening. There were 4-5 other photographers & probably 125+ friends, family, & prom kids.

Around 6 pm 8-10 Challengers, Mustangs, etc doing up doing 60+ mph down 5th Ave, sliding into turns at the intersections, just acting like fucking fools. Mark my words, one of the dumbasses will eventually slide into a crowd & kill a lot of folks. Of course Birmingham PD was no where to be found.

This occurs almost every weekend at this location (so don’t say that the PD doesn’t know about it)

My view is from 500 miles. It appears they are following the same path as those spring destinations I mentioned. Instead of addressing the problem with confrontations, they just shut everything down.

Now, from my view? They are going to go somewhere else which is the intent. Where? They are coming from areas an hour away. Are they just going to say, "okay, let's go home?"

You are correct about the ā€œjust push them somewhere else ā€œ attitude. I guess that’s easier & cleaner than actually doing the job.

Kinda what I figured but wasn't sure. I've got a daughter starting college next year who has UA high on her list. I'm trying to talk her into going elsewhere.

It's her choice. She likes UA, florida, and utah. Some places list UA and florida as 2 of the most dangerous campuses so I'm kinda leary about my daughter going to either.

If it's that same study posted here before, I can assure you with 100% confidence that it was complete bullshit. And I don't say that out of some loyalty to UA... I have my issues with them, especially on the academic side. But that study was either a hit job on UA and UF (which I suspect), or that group of attorneys who researched it are among the dumbest humans, let alone attorneys, walking this earth.

I'm friends several local law enforcement officers and investigators, from UAPD, to TPD, to TCSO. I'm also close with the parents of several current students and a couple that are enrolling this summer/fall to start their freshmen years. While there are certainly some sketchy areas in and around Tuscaloosa, it's not different than any other city of it's size. The campus itself is extremely safe. Many schools don't even have their own police department. auburn did away with theirs several years ago and just turned patrol/enforcement over to the city, for example. UA's is well staffed and well equipped, plus they are backed up by and work in coordination with the city's department.

This A-Day takeover that's turned into an annual event is a problem, but the last couple of years now, it has sorta fizzled out. People don't realize that this takeover event has been going on for years now... it's one (of several) reasons we quit doing A-Day tailgates. We had to have people stay with our stuff every possible minute or groups of teens (some older) roaming campus would steal everything. Even yesterday after the baseball game, I about had an issue with a group in the parking lot of Foosackly's. Meanwhile, there were 3 police cars with lights on next door at the gas station dealing with some other dipshits. But, that annual "block party" is limited to just 1 night a year, and as I said, it seems to be losing some steam now that TPD is being more proactive.

Bottom line, the campus, The Strip, the riverwalk area, downtown, 15th St, Northport, etc... It's all safe. There are pockets of places that students don't need to be, but if they have any awareness whatsoever, they'll know those places when they see them. I'd send my own daughter to UA if that's where she wanted to go. And if yours does decide to go there, I'm only 10-15 minutes away if she were to ever need anything. I'd help however I could.

Thank you for the information and the offer. I'm sure I'll be nervous wherever she goes. First cousin's daughter just graduated and she's working near campus now and still loves it. She's going to take my daughter on a tour in the next few weeks. She's applying for Navy and Air Force ROTC so part of where she ends up going will depend on which branch she chooses. She really likes the Navy nursing program and wants to be an NP but only Air Force at UA. I've seen how small towns in south Alabama have changed since I left and I guess that gives me a bias. I've been trying to stay of the choice as it's one she has to make but I kinda like utah personally. UF campus seemed nice enough, as does UA, it's really her decision. She's a good kid and not one I'm really worried about hanging out in the wrong areas, just an over protective dad I think.

Sounds like she has a really good plan. And IMO, your concerns are normal. And I think a good thing in general. I’ll be the same way, if not much worse, when mine leaves the nest in a few years.

Atlanta has that in Midtown. Cars, motorcycles, four wheelers, marauding about in numbers to prevent any one officer from making a difference. On the interstate, us heading home from a show, I've almost been overrun by building traffic, with dozens doing a slow rolling roadblock so their brethren can do wheelies out ahead. During that evening, "cow mover" and "50 cal" flashed into my wishlist of truck implements.
