šŸˆ Basketball post that deserves a little attention. National papers talking about coaching job...

I must retract my earlier comments on this issue. Surprisingly, to me at least, the U of A is willing to open up the checkbook. Marshall's comments are non committal, but he did say that he would listen to what we have to say, and he would be foolish not to. If we get him it would be a home run hire for sure. A two out in the bottom of the ninth, bases loaded grand slam home run.

Cecil Hurt: HERE YOU GO: Summing up a few questions
First, I am not being vague. I can't give a definitive yes or no about a candidate who may not know the definitive yes or no himself at this point.

As I've said all along, Alabama will step up financially to attract the candidate it feels is best for the opening. They did not fire Anthony Grant to tread water. You have to be wary about putting a firm $ figure on it, because those things get negotiated along the way. Certainly, many people, feel that Geegg Marshall is the best coach available who is likely to move. He won't be at Wichita forever, regardless of what happens this off-\season. Does he want $3 million a year? 4 million? Those things get negotiated. Would Wichita match a "crazy offer?" Don't know.

Sometimes, coaches like to be perceived as the "top guy." Shaka Smart doesn't want to be a second choice, one would think.

Archie Miller is a promising young coach and Alabama is aware of that. I think Miller would be the next name considered.

Bill Battle is in a spot similar to what Mal was in with Coach Saban. Some people think things always work out like that did, but it isn't always the case. But it is sometimes the case.

I lumped Forde into that category because of his football comments. I saw the twitter feed of Bob Lutz. I know his comments were meant as sarcasm about 12 fans, but anyone should know you don't take jabs at a program that just fired their coach because he simply wasn't winning.

We can add Forde due to his basketball comments now. Cecil Hurt touched on it a bit in his piece linked over on the basketball forum. I saw where you "liked" an update @Bamabww posted where Forde made the statement, "Sources told Yahoo Sports that Marshall already had signaled Alabama not to waste its energy putting together a whopper offer for his services, because he had his eyes on Texas."

I'm not going to accuse Forde of simply making things up on they fly. I am going to say he's completely wrong with that statement. I have to wonder what he's thinking with Battle headed to Wichita (may be there already) for a meeting with Marshall this morning. He seriously can't be thinking Battle is going to Wichita just to hand over some brochures about UA and ask his secretary to leave them on his desk.

Today very well may end up being a very interesting, and pivotal day, for Bama basketball.

Another thing I got from the Texas web site was that there are a lot of mixed signals coming out. We zeroed in on Marshall from the beginning, while their choice seems to be Marshall/Smart/NBAguy in no particular order of presence. More chaos in their athletic department. We have seen this play out before.

Former Texas coach Rick Barnes finalizing deal with Tennessee

Tennessee has offered its opening to Rick Barnes and, barring a late snag in negotiations, the former Texas coach is expected to accept, a source told CBSSports.com.

A deal could be finalized by the end of Monday, a source said.

Barnes made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances in 17 years at Texas before formally resigning his position under pressure Sunday afternoon. He peaked in 2003 -- when T.J. Ford led the Longhorns to the Final Four. That's the positive on his resume. But the negative is that Barnes only escaped the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament five times in the past 17 seasons. His last Sweet 16 came in 2008.

Barnes, 60, was, prior to Texas, the coach at George Mason, Providence and Clemson. He was the CAA coach of the Year in 1987 and the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1999, 2003, 2008 and 2014. But this season's team that underachieved ultimately convinced Texas' administration that a change in leadership was needed, sources told CBSSport.com. So Barnes was essentially removed at Texas and thus available to pursue the Tennessee job that opened last week when Donnie Tyndall was fired after one season because of NCAA violations he allegedly committed while coaching at Southern Miss.
