🏀 🏀 Alabama vs Tennessee: No. 6 Alabama Loses on Buzzer Beater at No. 5 Tennessee

I just hope the team responds well to this. So many times in the past before Oats, Alabama would play a really great game like this and lose, but it would greatly affect their mentality in the next games and they'd lose. You have to put it behind you and get ready to win the next one. Can't take off either because Florida is really good. Golden is one of the best young coaches in the game right now and understands matchups better than anyone.
Yeah I would say they are better than the Viles. They dug themselves a hole by crapping the bed the last 30 seconds.

you been saying this throughout the season. This team hasn't put together consistent game on defense. We need to be able to say "the defense has been real good the last four games..."

I didn’t watch the game and I’m glad I didn’t. Sounds like a classic “remote thrower” type.

I saw a clip of the 5 second play and the three.

Um, why did oats not call a timeout there? No way you can turn it over like that and give UT a shot to win it.

What I read is that UT coach was trying to call a TO?

The last 35 seconds of the game:

Then the unraveling began. Here’s a list of the errors.

  1. Grant Nelson fouled Chaz Lanier on the layup. That put Lanier at the line with the chance at a three-point play. “Tough call on Grant’s verticality late there at the end,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said. “This is the game of basketball. There’s a lot of tough calls in the game.”
  2. Oats subbed out the rebounders for the guards before the free-throw attempt. Out went Mo Dioubate/Cliff Omoruyi and in went Mark Sears/Chris Youngblood. “Subbed our bigs out to get the rebound before I should have,” Oats said. “Should have subbed them out after we secured the rebound.”
  3. Jarin Stevenson committed a foul during the free-throw miss. That put Jahmai Mashack at the free-throw line, and he made both attempts.
  4. Oats doesn’t call timeout during inbound play. Alabama had a chance to inbound the ball with about two seconds left on the shot clock on its offensive end. Then Tennessee blanketed the Crimson Tide. There was nowhere to go. "I should have called timeout," Oats said. “Coaches can call timeout on the underneath out of bounds play. At four (seconds), I should have called it."
  5. Philon commits five-second violation. He didn’t get the ball in on time and committed a turnover. That gave Tennessee the ball back with three seconds left on the game clock. "I thought we were getting it in,“ Oats said. ”That’s on me."
  6. Oats subs out the guards for the bigs. Out went Sears/Youngblood and in went Dioubate/Omoruyi. "We probably could have had better guys in,“ Oats said. ”Get a little bit smaller at the end with 3.8 on the clock to make sure they didn’t get the ball up the floor."
  7. Mashack gets too open of a look. He had a good bit of space to make the game-winning 3-pointer, and he did.
Oat dropped the ball on this.

At least he acknowledged it. Good thing is while Oats is stubborn, he does adjust certain things that and he's still a relatively young coach. He'll learn from it.

The timeout thing is just inexcusable but can't do anything about it now.

Correct

At least this type of dumb crap is happening in the regular season. I know, might cost us a chance at a #1 seed, but really……I almost don’t want a #1 seed. I almost feel like it causes a team a ton of pressure. I’d almost rather be a #2 or #3 going into the tournament.

Was funny. All the "#1" seed talk during bama- Tennessee game was funny. Bama sttill had florida n AU. And there was still sec tournament....
Was a lot of bball before seeding. ...
it was a game between 2 highly ranked teams on Tennessee court.
We need them in ttown next year. l

I didn’t get the chance to watch the game. Just saw key highlights. Really, it doesn’t really matter that much if you are a #1, 2, 3 or even a 4. Most of those first games are against inferior opponents anyway (yes, there’s upsets, but not all that likely).

Don’t get me wrong, a number 1 statistically speaking when’s the tournament about 60% of the time. It’s a good thing to be a number 1. But, I feel like there’s so much more expectation. We tend to play like crap with high expectations.

We need to get the stupid games out now and start getting to the peak about final four time. Haha

Flame throwers ready....we basically beat them on THEIR court. This team has some promise....we didn't go up there and suck buzzer to buzzer, so there is hope for all you "die with every missed shot/turnover guys".

Exactly why the tournaments are fun even for casual bball fan.
They say " there are no sec officials " but there sure is a lot of home court calls Everywhere

Would ghere have been a 5 second call on inbounds play in Ttown or neutral court. Probably not. Had to be looking for it

Officials play to crowd. I guess they get caught up in fan- delirium. When they do a demonetize ?? signal on a call. Thats playing to crowd.

I wasn't going to even mention it because not many would have taken it seriously and just scoffed at it, without really thinking about it. But then yesterday, I noticed Bryan Passink tweet out pretty much exactly what I had been thinking since the game ended on Saturday. Here it is...

Obviously, Passink knows way more than I do, to the point that it would be laughable to even make some wild comparison. But him putting that out there gave me, at least, some validity to my thoughts on it. Yes, Alabama has been playing pretty damn good. The Tide is also closing out with a schedule filled with "could be" final 4 type teams. Had Bama closed with LSU, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Vandy, and Georgia... then Bama probably wins them all. But heading into the Tournament (the real one, not the SEC one), what does Bama get out of that? Me personally, as long as they are playing well, I'm ok with them dropping a few to close out the year. Oats isn't exactly Saban in the realm of artificial motivation, but where he does hit the right buttons is when the team is losing games. This squad will be much more motivated after this hard landing, IMO. Couple that with the idea that they are playing pretty well, and I kinda like their odds on making some noise again.

Feels damn good that Oats has taken Alabama Basketball to a level where the SEC Tournament is now meaningless for us.
Its not really meaningless. Sec championship is a badge of honor. Like making to final 4.
Or cfps ( when it was 4 teams). Or getting to college softball/baseball World Series... mens or womens.

Theres more than just the national championship. Before Saban i would get near a 100% agreement. Nick spoiled us.
And carrys over to all sports.

The regular season SEC championship is much more meaningful than the SEC Tournament championship. And we have more than enough data points in recent years to show that the late season stress that the SECT puts on champions, isn't worth the price when they get bounced early from the Dance because they don't have their legs back. And yes, 10-15 years ago, it would have been great for Bama to win it. Usually because they had to win it because they were a perennial bubble team (which I alluded to in the previous reply). I have zero issues admitting that and am glad and thankful that Oats has the program at this level now where it doesn't matter.

I'll also add, and I know some don't want to believe this, but again, data points (and their own words)... the Committee basically ignores league tournament results other than the obvious bid guarantees that the winners get. So, from Bama's perspective... meaningless (or way overrated if one prefers that word).
