🏀 🏀 #4 Alabama at #14 Mississippi State 🏀 - The Tide outlast State, 88-84, on a Wednesday night road trip

No communication. You don't pick up his man and forget about your man rolling to the basket. Both of them didn't communicate.
Absolutely cannot happen this late into the season. Certainly not in a big possession like that. Our PnR defense was horrific. Tough win though. This team is definitely gritty on the road. It's not easy going into A&M, Mississippi State, and Kentucky and being undefeated. Hell you can throw in the 20-point win at South Carolina too, as they should have beaten auburn and Florida at home.

Take a minute, if you have it, and look at the defensive numbers from last season versus where they are now. I haven't in a week or two. I know DRtg finished last season at 111th. I'd be willing to bet they are inside the top fifty right now. (Defense, across the NCAA, has been better this season than last.)
You'd be correct. We're sitting at 44th in the country. 115th in defensive efficiency, which makes sense. We have stretches where we look really good on D (1st half vs OU, 2nd half vs LSU, 1st half vs Vandy). Think we've only had one true game where we played up to the potential and that was vs Houston.

Oats is aiming for that top 20.

This is far more common than you think. Half the teams in NBA struggle with PnR defense. I remember few years ago, Houston was one of the best team in NBA that could stop Golden State offense.

I think bama's issue is that they don't have a "QB" on the defense calling out assignments on the fly. Someone similar to Draymond green. Sherrell, Reid, Stevenson doesn't seem like the type to do that. Dioubate should be reacting and reading, and calling out "Don't switch, stay on him" let me go back and look at the film again.

Just a theory but I think guys that thrive in a game playing at Alabama's pace always shine in games playing us because we induce such a hectic pace and Josh Hubbard is one of those guys. The guy in North Dakota was another. I would love for either to hop in the portal and come to BAMA because they love our pace of play. Hubbard gave us hell last year too.
I'd almost guarantee Alabama's probably going to throw some money at Eaglestaff and Hubbard in the offseason. Also Simeon Cottle at Kennesaw State. And because of Alabama's style of play, there will be a lot of interest from the players.

Update: Miss St was moving fast, so common sense should say, Don't switch on that play. Stay with your man. If you help, make sure someone else is helping you. I think it's a lapse of communication in that moment and they didnt react fast enough.

Unfortunately too, we don't have a lock down on ball defender at guard. Youngblood and Philon are good defenders, but aren't as quick with their feet as you'd like on D. I think Nimari Burnett and Jaden Bradley were really good at being able to figh through high ball screens and utilizing their length to clog lanes. That '22 team was elite in a lot of areas and unfortunately got matched with SDSU.

Digressing though. I understand Oats' philosophy and his love for drop D. But man sometimes I do wish we'd run zone just a couple times just to see how well we'd do with our length.
