TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball recorded a 13-0 shutout win over Southern Miss on Tuesday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the midweek victory, the Crimson Tide improves to 24-10 on the season and a perfect 10-0 in midweek games.
Alabama wasted no time getting on the board Tuesday evening, posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff home run from
Colby Shelton to start the fifth, the offense left no doubt, adding six more runs in that frame. The Tide then posted two runs apiece in the sixth and eighth innings for insurance.
The offense was complimented by a strong effort from the Tide pitching staff.
Jacob McNairy (5-1) got things started, tossing 4.2 innings and striking out four with no walks for the win. McNairy then gave way to the bullpen of
Zane Probst,
Hunter Furtado,
Riley Quick,
Alton Davis II and
Aidan Moza. The relief group held the Golden Eagles hitless over the final 4.1 innings to secure the shutout victory.
"I'm really proud of our club. This was obviously a big win, a really well-played game. I challenged our team yesterday by telling them that we have to play our best baseball more consistently really soon, and the guys brought it tonight. Jacob (McNairy) gave us a great start. It was big when
Zane Probst came in in the fifth to get the final out, which gave us a chance to really break the game open there in the bottom of that inning."
How It Happened
- B1 | Jim Jarvis led things off with a single to right before moving to third on a failed pickoff that resulted in a two-base error. Tommy Seidl followed with a walk to put runners on the corners for Drew Williamson, with the Tide first baseman sending the first pitch he saw into center for an RBI-single. Both runners then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before a sac fly from William Hamiter added another. (2-0, Alabama)
- B5 | Colby Shelton got the rally started with a leadoff solo home run to right. Jarvis followed with a walk and then a hit-by-pitch for Seidl put two aboard. Williamson was next, singling to load the bases for Ed Johnson. The Tide second baseman followed with a two-run single through the right side that plated a pair. Hamiter then walked to load the bases once again, with an infield groundout from Dominic Tamez crossing one more. Will Hodo was next up, doubling to center for two more runs. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for a third time, Jarvis sent a sacrifice fly to right to cap the seven-run frame. (9-0, Alabama)
- B6 | Williamson led off with a single to left followed by a walk to Bryce Eblin. After a throwing error by Southern Miss put the pair in scoring position, Hamiter sent a 2-0 pitch into left-center for a two-run double. (11-0, Alabama)
- B8 | Jaxson West worked a one-out walk, followed by a double to left from Ryan Guardino to move both runners into scoring position. Andrew Pinckney then ripped the first pitch he saw into right-center for a two-run double to widen the gap. (13-0, Alabama)
