🏈 Barnett, Cooper and Cornwell are going to have some competition.

Sorry if I am late for the Jalen train but this is the first time I have had time to watch this video of him. After the rave reviews from Saban about his playing the role of Watson in practice, I believe this guy could be the real deal. A lot of talent for Lane (or whoever) to work with!

I didn't see any rave reviews... But I did see he was playing Watson for a week or so.

I like Hurts a lot. That being said, he ain't playing next year... And I'm guessing not until Barnett gets drafted or hurt. But hell, I've been dead ass wrong on our QB situation for 2 years now... So Hurts prolly win the job lol

I would say these are pretty rave reviews:
Tide coach Nick Saban said Saturday that he couldn't remember another early enrollee playing such an important role during game preparation after just arriving on campus.

"Jalen did a really, really good job," Saban said. "He's very athletic, and I think that was a real plus for our team to have him there for a few days to be able to have that kind of quickness for us to try to react to."

"He got me a couple times," Alabama All-American linebacker Reggie Ragland said, via Yahoo. "He's quick and fast just like Deshaun is, so he gave us a great look the whole time he was at practice."

Inside Alabama early enrollee QB Jalen Hurts' eventful first week on campus

Anyway, it's weird at the sampling of comments here already that seemingly are ready to ordain a guy (Barnett) that hasn't even taken a snap yet. Hell, I hope Barnett is the next greatest QB to come out of the SEC too but if, for some reason, whether it's injury or not being the next Savior as advertised (how many times have we seen that happen?) It's nice to know that we have up and coming talent that will be vying for the QB position. Whatever happened to just being happy we continue to get good players without having to qualify where they will be ranked in the pecking order? To me, that WAS lofty praise coming from Saban about a new player. If not, show me another instance where he has said something like that.

Yes it was lofty praise... I truly had not seen that article. Good find!

As far as putting them in a pecking order, only one can play.... And do you really see Saban playing a true freshman at QB?

No sir, I really don't. On the other hand, I am excited to see someone like Jalen playing for Alabama. I think we all saw how dangerous Watson could be both in the pocket and when he extended plays. I see that in Jalen. I am also anxious to see how Barnett grows in the system. I followed him closer in his recruitment than Jalen and was just surprised about how little hype Jalen got when he committed to Bama based on what I saw in that video and his help with Clemson prep. It's good to have deeper talent at that position even if only one can play at a time.

Yeah Hurts was a 3 star when he committed and not really seen as an "elite" QB recruit at the time... He had a really nice senior year and got his just due throughout the process... Now it looks like we got a steal! I'm really excited to have that athleticism at QB, but he's also super intelligent and was real loyal to UA. Good pickup

I'm very interested in seeing how this year plays out and who ends up winning the role this year. It has been said more than once on here that if you look at the past we probably will not know until about 3 games or so into the season. Before the season started I heard Lars Anderson on the radio talking with the locals and he stated that he felt like Jake Coker would win the job. Saban's MO has been, going all the way back to LSU days, that the senior most QB has always won the job.

That has been the case at Bama as well, save the fact that Sims/McAaron battle. I think this years QB race will be particularly interesting. I'm not counting out Jalen, but if ever a true freshman would have started I think it would have been last year with Barnett and all of the media fellatio that followed with him signing and coming to Bama.

I have high hopes for Barnett based off everything I have read and would love for a young QB to win out and know who will be behind center for the next 3-4 years. Only time will tell, but if Barnett gets the nod this fall, I fully expect there to be some transfers.

I agree, @rammerjammer , transfers are going to unavoidable especially at the QB spot.

I honestly hope we decide on a QB a little faster than game 3 again this year or one of the QB's takes the clear leadership role faster, whatever the case. We have another date with the Black Bears in Oxford at that time so I hope the battle is settled by then.

Think about the general conversations about the QB position in May and June this past summer...not as surprising now, is it?

Yeah Hurts was a 3 star when he committed and not really seen as an "elite" QB recruit at the time...

I think you may be confusing him with someone else. He was at the Elite 11 camp when he committed, ranked as a four star at the time (betting that was 247's Composite ... only one I really pay attention to.)

Last freshman qb to not redshirt?

Every year there's some hotshot coming in that gets people fired up. That's great, but if history is any indication, Nick won't be playing a true freshman at qb.

BB could not have possibly played in the SEC last year; he would have been killed. Several of the shots Coker took last season would have decapitated BB.
BB looked to have gained about three pounds last year so....

Hurts is built in a way that he could play as a fresh.

Contrary to what I have seen posted by a few others on the web I actually LOVE Hurts mechanics. Finally a QB that has a natural quick looking release. He's not just an "athlete" he makes very accurate passes to all areas of the field. His drops are very advanced IMO. Natural quick feet. He stood out IMO when doing drills vs other "elite 11" QB's.

When was the last time anyone heard ANYTHING positive about a Bama QB during a camp or season ? It has been a total debacle. I recall seeing a few positive reports about Cornwell before he lost his mind last year, and then supposedly his performance tanked immediately thereafter. So... the last legit time I can recall ever hearing anything positive coming from practices during a season was when word started to leak out toward the end of 2009 that AJ McCarron was looking like the best of the bunch.

So with that said... Not one single returning QB on the Bama roster has ever managed to create even enough buzz to create a positive rumor. Not a report, rumor, article... nothing. I watch all the player and coaches interviews during the season, and I have never heard any of them mention a younger QB as doing anything above ordinary.

The hype around Hurts during preparations is literally the most that has been said about a younger QB at Bama since McCarron as far as I know.

With all that said I'm not sure CNS would start Tom Brady if he wore a disguise and enrolled at Bama as a freshman. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Now I could see Lane maybe having a package for Hurts this season if he is what some think he could be.

The big ? in my opinion this year will be BB. If we dont start to hear positive news about him coming out of spring ball I will be disappointed.

Solid post and again, I friggin understand it's not likely he will avoid a redshirt. How many times does that need to be said? :bandhead: On the other hand, no one can tell me he won't be pushing for a spot in the lineup if need be and accordingly, pushing the other QB's to step up their game. Saban is going to play the best option given him so if you get into a Baylor-like situation as in 2015, who's to say Jalen can't contribute? Damn all of the wringing of hands over who starts when, I'm just glad we snagged a QB with his skill set.

It's interesting that so many claim that BB is the man this year when he was supposed to be the man last year. He has a lot of experience (on the team, not necessarily in a game) ahead of him. It will be interesting to see if he "takes control" this spring and summer to make it his team.

I hope he is good, but an 11 minute video of tossing long bombs to wide open receivers doesn't tell me a whole lot.

After how embarrassingly bad some of the people on this board, who represent themselves as knowledgeable regarding QB's, whiffed last year, I'll just wait and see who Saban and Kiffin send out.
