🏈 Barnett .....Baptism By Fire

Where have you heard that no one is good enough? No one has separated themselves yet. Two different concerns.

P.S. Barnett would be included in the QBs who aren't good enough (in your words).
Not wanting to argue with you but if no one has taken it by now why would you not choose him if everyone is still close in terms of production? If everyone is still having similar production in practices and scrimmages it would be wise to invest in someone for four years instead of one if they are equal. I should have clarified my thinking in the earlier post.

Not arguing with you either. Saban doesn't want a project for the future. He wants the best option for now. I don't think all QBs are "equal." IMO, Barnett is near the bottom because he has so much to learn. Today's scrimmage will help to separate the pack. He really doesn't need a starter until game week.

Fair enough. I want the best man to play. I was just voicing my opinion. Hopefully someone can separate themselves today. I do really like Barnett though. RTR

I think BB will be top talent in the future, but my bet is that he gets redshirted this year to learn and still have four years to play. Only Coker is a senior so we have plenty of talent for the next several years even if we don't recruit another QB (but we will).

Not happening.

Saban's comments about "not needing a QB to win games for us" tells me two things:

1) He firmly believes our D will be outstanding this year

And...

B) We have enough capable QBs on the roster to not burn the redshirt awaiting BB.

If BB is as good as advertised, his RS isn't a consideration. He RSs this year, starts the next two and leaves as a RS soph vs a true junior.

I don't think he'll win the job, but I think he'll get the call if the #1 goes down. He may see his RS burned to gain some game game experience this year even if the starter stays healthy.

Unless the starter is Morris. And with the way itse sounding, it'll be his job. He does a good enough job this year and doesn't get us beat, there's no way Saban passes over someone he trusts just because the QB2 may have a little more talent than the more mature and consistent QB1.

Regardless of the starter, I won't be surprised to see BBs RS burned under the conditions I laid out.

It has nothing to do with the talent level at this point. It has to do with decision making. BB's level of knowledge isn't there yet. He only got 11 attempts today compared to 27 (Bateman), 26 (Coker), and 21 (Morris). With about half the number of attempts as the next lowest (but we don't know about Cornwell), that tells me Barnett has a redshirt.

We're in violent agreement that experience is the only thing holding him back. My point is that he may be too talented to RS.

No difference in losing him in 3 yrs as a RS Soph or a true junior IF he is as talented as he appears to be. Even if he doesnt leave in three years, he almost certainly wont stay for 5. The point remains that RS'ing a QB with that potential does nothing but waste game experience options for him as a Fresh. A true fresh even being in the convo with two seniors is a testament in itself.

If we are to believe the hype and the named starter is injured, BB WILL get snaps this year if not pulled up to start.

Even if the starter isn't injured, I think BB may get game snaps as well with belief that he isn't here beyond 4 years in any circumstance, so a RS is pointless.

He has tons of talent, but there are a lot of QBs with talent on the team. CNS hasn't been one to give the #2 QB many snaps much less #3 and those snaps are just handoff time. He might get a snap or two against MTSU or L-M, but he can still redshirt after that (if I remember, a player can't play in more than 10% of the games and it must be in the first part of the season).

I believe CNS knows who the starter is. He is just keeping it a secret until we all are driven insane, or just have to wait two more weeks. We may not know until after the Wisconsin game. At this point I would just roll the dice and have faith in the process

Point 1: hyperbole

While "talent" is certainly subjective,
it appears there is one truly talented QB, a few good ones , and a serviceable one.

Point 2: 100 percent agree. Pointed that out in another thread as a contributing factor to our current QB situation. CNS has excelled at MANY (understatement) things, but QB depth development isn't one of them.

Point 3: that is not my understanding. I'm pretty sure the rules are pretty clear that playing a single second in any game negates a RS for that season. But, I guess everything is waiverable if you have the pull

Point 4, We are still 2 weeks out from Dallas and this thing ain't decided yet. If we played tomorrow, it would be some combination of Bateman and Morris, but we don't. This thing could change 2 or 3 more times before we kickoff on Sept. 3rd. All we know for certain is Cornwell is done, Coker is fading fast and Barnett APPEARS to be headed for a redshirt. But the last thing is the least certain of all.
