🏈 Bama's staff is complete with the hire of Brian Daboll

New England Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll is expected to interview for the Alabama offensive coordinator job, a source told Fox Sports on Monday. The 41-year-old Daboll, who has been an OC in the NFL for the Chiefs, Browns and Dolphins, was a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Michigan State from 1998-99.

Word is, another former Bill Belichick protege, former Houston Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey has emerged as a strong candidate for the Bama OC opening. Godsey is close with Tide offensive line coach Brent Key. Another option is Mike Locksley who is a former Illinois OC and was promoted by Saban last month to an on-field coaching role that FOX has learned was a co-offensive coordinator job. According to a source, one other potential OC candidate that could end up getting some consideration is UCLA offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch.

Give me Daboll, Locksley handling the WR's, Williams with the tight ends and working with Key, plus Pannuzio coming in as the 10th coach in the summer? Looks like a good combination to me.

Mac is a pro-style.
Tua is more of a passer than a runner.
Jalen, more of a runner than passer at this point.

Hard to call that a "cupboard full of dual threat QB's."

I don't think Bama is giving up on their spread concept or Jalen for that matter. Regardless of style, Saban has given his blessings on opening up the offense these last 3 years, that's not something I see us getting away from.

If you are trying to say Tua isn't a dual threat then you are extremely wrong.

I hope he's not saying that, but I don't think that's his point. A QB is SUPPOSED to be more of a passer than a runner - dual threat implies that a QB ALSO runs well, so that his legs are ALSO a threat - Jones is NOT dual threat.

Some will argue that Jalen isn't MUCH of a dual threat right now...

A team having the ability to move to a spread formation, or a hurry up approach to a spread offense, isn't something anyone expects the offense to lose. I do believe we will not hear as many fans, or commentators, talk about the RPO with the offense in '17.

I really wish some people would stop and look at the talent on campus right now--specifically, with two position groups, the offensive line and the running backs. If anything that should give a good idea which direction the hiring of an offensive coordinator is going to go, right? It's one that is going to fit with the talent on hand.

Everyone I've communicated with, everyone I've read (those who I know have connections within the athletic department,) literally, everyone say's Bama is going with a conservative, pro-style attack offense. And by conservative, I'm talking the opposite of what you'd find with a Big 12 offense, or any kind of "spread it out, toss it around 'air-raid'" type of attack.

Considering Saban was basically on a "working" vacation last week I am thinking we'll know the answer to many of these questions within a day, maybe two.

I know we are just kicking this new hire around the block but there are also articles that feel we have the best WR group in the nation coming in with Ruggs, Shaver, and Jeudy. With Ridley and, I think, the next handful with Diggs, that's a lot of uncommon talent at WR as well. But I would agree that the OC hire is going to be a strong indication of the way Saban see's the future for this offense. What did you think of the attempt to get involved with vetting the OK St. OC?

Vetting? Strong word there. Saban, as he always has, reaches out to a lot of people. he very well may have been contacted by Saban. It's HIGHLY unlikely he was offered a job.

If you recall, we've had people that were talked with only to get background and reference material(s.) Then, a day later, their school's fan sites come out with "turned down the job because he loves..."

BTW, let's not forget this wouldn't be the first time the Bama staff has worked with Okie State: worked with Gundy's offensive staff there recently.

Geez, this has me laughing a bit ...

Remember when Pitino's kid turned down the Bama HC job in basketball? Hell, just recently LSU fans were claiming Saban had offered the OC job to Canada (before the announcement for Sark) when, indeed, Canada was contacted...about game prep leading into the playoffs. It was inconceivable that that contact had to do with his job as coordinator of Pitt and their game against Clemson.

I would say anything we hear would be less that general info on the actual search, so there is always that. But names we are bantering about have run across the board with offensive philosophy. With our talent, we can literally run what we want, but it's interesting the names that have surfaced so far.

Can you read that back to yourself and understand what you were saying? :naughtydevil:

As far as the bolded sentence:

Over the past few days I've watched some people become incensed about offensive philosophy's and this hire. Some of the names, and ideas offered, have had me laughing, literally.

Here we sit today...same names as a week ago but since Saban is actually working again this week we should expect a little movement.

I think one of the biggest stories being missed is how differently offensive coordinator searches have been in the SECW this spring. Auburn's, LSU's, and Bama's have such different story lines.
