Former NFL coordinator expected to interview for Tide vacancy

Former college and NFL assistant coach George Godsey was expected to interview for the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach vacancy at Alabama on Wednesday, two sources told BamaOnLine.com.

Godsey spent the last six seasons in the NFL with the Houston Texans (2014-16) and New England Patriots (2011-13). Prior to that, he spent the beginning of his coaching career at Central Florida, where he earned his start as a graduate assistant. Godsey was elevated to quarterbacks coach at UCF in 2005 and moved over to coach the Golden Knights’ running backs coach in 2009-10.

He previously worked with Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key and associate athletics director for football Ed Marynowitz at Central Florida. In addition to working together at UCF, Godsey and Key were teammates at Georgia Tech.

Most recently, Godsey served as the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He coached quarterbacks for the club in 2014. Godsey and the Texans agreed to a mutual parting of ways following the 2016 campaign.

Godsey also served as an offensive assistant (2011) and tight ends coach (2012-2013) in New England.

As a player, Godsey was a two-year starter at Georgia Tech, where he guided the Yellow Jackets to consecutive bowl games while behind center.

God, his offenses at Houston were horrendous.

Well that eliminates Helfrich, Kelly and Godsey...

Frankly, I could see Enos and drudging through that goofy non-compete clause he signed rather than Helfrich and Kelly. There was talk that Mr. Nike was willing to throw 10 mil at Kelly to get him to come home this season. He's got to know there are at lease 5 powerhouse teams out there next season who would stand in line for his services as HC?

I disagree. Kelly's teams' performance in the pros was atrocious and no pro team wants to touch him (for head or assistant roles). He needs a role to redeem himself but I don't know of any team that is standing in line. I don't see the personalities of Saban and Kelly getting along. Of course that didn't stop Saban from hiring Kiffin. Saban needs to find some stability in the role. Kelly could likely be a one-and-done.

Which is why I said I would take Enos over Kelly, schematics, and HC persona. But Kelly's reputation in college is still totally different than the NFL. Oregon came a calling with a heap of cash, so real in fact that Kelly felt compelled during the middle of the 49er season to make a public comment that he wasn't interested in going back to college coaching. I do believe that Kelly will easily find a college HC gig sooner rather than later. This isn't even close to being Sark or a Kiffin situation.

Cecil seems to believe our defense being on the field for 100 plays will shape the next OC choice. Let us pray.

By all accounts that points back to a more traditional pro style offense.......I have no problem with that. We just have to learn to deal with the HUNH a little more effectively. Look at the last 4 or 5 bowl games. OSU put a ton of points and yards on us, same for Clemson in 16 (although we won) and then this year they gashed us pretty hard, considering how stout our defenses have been the past 2 years. OU when Trevor Knight had his coming out party against us was a mediocre defensive performance.

I'm not saying our defense is bad or anything stupid like that. It's just that we still struggle to an extent with the speed of the game. I wonder if Saban thinks of slowing the offense down again and grinding it out a little more offensively will help to keep the defense off the field for 99 plays.......

One thing is for sure....Saban knows what he's doing. How many of us knew who Jim McElwain was before 2008?

From my vantage point, this was an offensive failure to do enough to win a championship. I believe even with Sark, the HUNH, RPO, was going to get tempered with a more powered/balanced offense. I'm just hoping for an OC that relates more to our past than the present.

Yep, the fact that 2016 defense didn't win a championship and now people can argue it isn't in the 'best ever' conversation is a travesty

I have thought that we should teach a simplified version of both offenses, the HUNH and the Pro style. Teach 6 plays in each with perfecting those 6 plays in each. Also throw in about 2 special plays in each, that are run only occasionally. Then we come out run the HUNH for the first half, switch to pro style for second half. Switch it up in some games Pro first, HUNH second.
