🏈 Bama Spring Quarterback Battle

I get the impression that Bateman is the same tentative QB we saw against Ole Miss; a guy so afraid to make a mistake that he...makes a mistake. Even under Saban, every QB we've had has had some sort of moxie or leadership quality about him, from the quiet confidence of Blake and G-Mac to the brash gunslinger mentality of AJ and JPW. I think that will be the difference in the end for BB8 versus Cornwell or Bateman. Bateman hasn't changed who he is, and when the chips were down last year in the spring and fall to win the job, Cornwell flipped out and plummeted down the depth chart for his on and off the field behavior. BB8 may not be the strongest arm or the most experienced or the fastest or the most athletic, but I think he's the best total package we have at the moment and that's why I think he wins the job. But that's just my opinion. CKL and CNS got this.

Bateman has great throwing mechanics, a great release and touch on short routes. His long ball is quite sufficient. He is also going to be one of the fastest running QBs in the modern era at Alabama...

Sounds like a lot to worry about.

We won't know about his leadership until he is on the field for a game or two. That's the uncomfortable truth about any QB. Some guys show up on game day and aren't really practice guys. Some guys are quiet while others are loud. If Bama is winning by 20+ ppg, he will be called a "Good leader" whether he is or not.

Im not gonna throw Bateman under the bus or claim to have any inside knowledge here or even write him off completely, but when I saw him at the Chattanooga game in person I was convinced that he had regressed immensely since the season started. He was tentative, even more so than the Ole Miss game, and was absolutely missing almost every read. I couldn't believe how wide open receivers got SEVERAL times and Bateman just flat out missed it each time, and would instead force it in somewhere else. I think part of the Blake love is that he was obviously a very highly recruited player but also people are dying for another 2-3 year starter.

I didn't watch that closely but I've never felt like Bateman is the guy. At this point in his career, if he's not clearly ahead of Cornwell or Barnett, then it's time to let the young bucks take the offense. Would be awesome to have a 2-3 year starter and let someone develop confidence and leadership qualities. I know Saban/Kiffin have been able to win with 1st year starters, and obviously they will have to do it again this year, but there's no doubt it's nice to have some continuity.

Ya know, Monday Saban said "he has more experience and a better grasp of the offense" than any other QB on the roster. As I hear that, coupled with what we know about CNS and his MO, it tells me he's clearly ahead of any QB on the roster at this point.

Quite frankly, I've found nothing that leads me to think we'll see this team leave spring camp with the same rotational order that we saw at the beginning of spring camp.

I do find it interesting we see people talking about Barnett being the future because of his agility and speed, but Coop is just as good with the agility and has faster straight line speed. Equally, when I see people talk about arm strength it's rare to see David mentioned despite him having the strongest arm on the team.

Let me add this ... I could care less, but I'm a fan of the team so I'm going to be a bit emotionally involved as we all are/will be.

BUT, I'm not feeling the least amount of anxiety about the position. On that scale, I couldn't care less.

I'm finding it very encouraging that Hurts continues to get good reviews from literally everyone. Coaches, players, and connected media types all seem to be very impressed with Hurts.

Obviously he is not going to be the quarterback this year, but seeing as how I cant recall the last player to create this much positive buzz at QB this early in their career it would seem that QB play at Bama may be heading in the right direction for some years to come.

I really hope we get some stats from the scrimmage today relative to the QB's.

This years A-Day is gonna be a blast.

Sounds like Bateman is ahead of everyone. Not only did he not have as many bad moments, but he seemed to have a better grasp of the offense in general. The bad news is it didnt sound like he "wowed" anyone. He got away with a throw or two that would have stained his stats, but he was the more steady performer today.

BB6 was picked off three times; two went for 6 in the wrong direction. It sounded like to me that BB6 had the highest highs and the lowest lows of the day between the QB's. He did have several "wow" throws and runs. One REC member said BB6 looked like johnny manz on a few scrambles. So he flashed what everyone is excited about, but it sounds like the lows were pretty low.

Cornwell Sounds lost. REC guy on twitter at the scrimmage said DC looked at the left side of the field maybe once today. lol Me thinks maybe tarzan/jane situation there

Hurts Also flashed today. Sounded like he had a good scrimmage for a TF. Looks the part in pads; showed good wheels, and a strong arm. Still raw.

Conclusion:

Bateman = more experienced safer QB

BB6 = highest ceiling, but prone to decisions that CNS will not abide

DC = Transfer

Hurts = could be a good one down the road

Thanks TB!!! Glad I found it lol.

-Good for Bateman. Saban always looking for the guy who makes the least mistakes... Hard for me to grasp that he could be our QB on opening day but he's got as good a shot as anyone.

-Barnett throwing ally oops to the defense not a great sign. Good news is that is not your typical defense

-I've always felt like Cornwell was a serious project... He had a minimal amount of experience in high school due to some family issues, transfers, and injuries. So hard to make up all that time in a situation like this where we've had at least 4 scholarshiped QB's for his entire career.

-So pumped to hear Hurts is doing well. Really liked how he handled his recruitment and his attitude in general. It will be awesome to have another Blake type that can take off and make big plays

Saban was especially complimentary of the way Cornwell played, going out of his way to say he “threw the ball fairly well” in his opening statement.

So this really contradicts what was passed down by some folks at the scrimmage. Interesting.

To me, it is another confirmation that scrimmage observers are looking at different things, in different perspectives, than the staff. Breaking news there, eh?

We can certainly learn some things from scrimmages but the QB position, and how it's going to break down, really isn't one of them.

A few answers in Alabama QB competition after first scrimmage

This is routine by now.

The third straight spring of Alabama quarterback competitions reached the first mile marker Saturday afternoon. The first scrimmage of 2016 came and went without an indication of a leader.

But it's early – extremely premature given the timetable of the previous two seasons. Only the families and boosters sprinkled in Bryant-Denny Stadium got a first-hand look at the action, but Nick Saban offered a few insights afterward.

David Cornwell was the only name mentioned in his opening statement. Saban noted the rising redshirt sophomore "threw the ball fairly well." Junior Cooper Bateman, redshirt freshman Blake Barnett and true freshman Jalen Hurts are also involved.

By design, the first scrimmage wasn't structured to create separation. Quarterbacks were shuffled and swapped throughout the afternoon. That comes at the expense of continuity and rhythm.

A cross wind was also a factor. It made things difficult, Saban said, but there was plenty that can be taken from the first live action.

"They made some good throws today. There were some inconsistencies in the passing game When I say that, I'm not just talking about quarterbacks throwing the ball. I'm talking about the protection, the receivers running the right routes, the timing, all those things."

Perhaps the most important part of this situation is handling the mental rigors that come with a pressure-filled competition.

"I think the big thing they need to is, each and every one of them can't be thinking about where I am on the depth chart, what my position is and worry about that," Saban said. "They need to worry about what they need to do to be better so they can play winning football at the position and do the things that they need to do to become a really good quarterback. I think they've done a pretty good job of that so far."

Bateman is the only one in the group who's appeared in a college game. He completed 37 of 52 passes for 291 yards in mostly a backup role. A starter in the Ole Miss loss, Bateman was pulled for Jake Coker after an 11-for-14 night with 87 yards but ending with an interception.

A big part of the 2015 competition was the leadership component. It took longer than Saban wanted for someone to assume that role. After one scrimmage, this battle is a long way from that step.

"I think two things have to happen," Saban said. "I think a guy has to win his teammates over but I think you've also got to be put a guy in position to be able to do that. We rotated a lot of guys around today. We're trying to give everybody a chance right now. We'll evaluate how they did on film and divvy up the reps for next week."

I said in my quarterback prediction a little while back to watch him. If he was mimicking Deshaun Watson, he had to somewhat be half ass, because that guy is amazing. I think Hurts is going to be great for us. Barnett better watch out for him in the future.
