Yes, McElroy rarely took any type of risk throwing the ball. The game has changed a bit since then, but the idea was that if you have a dominant defense and a string running game you were not likely to lose unless you shot yourself in the foot with turnovers. The prevalence of the spread and the up tempo offenses caused us to adjust our thinking a bit on both sides of the ball.
