I’m sure I’ve told this story, but I was in Wisconsin for Graduate School of Banking a few summers around ‘99. Northern Independent League, Madison Black Wolf played at the tiny municipal stadium, operating on a shoestring. Had the girl pitcher from the old Silver Bullets, about a 65mph fastball, but all sorts of off speed junk. At the start of the game, they named a “beer batter” from the opposing team. If they struck out, beer was a buck from then through the bottom of the inning. Guy has an epic at bat, slapping all sorts of nasty stuff foul, it absolutely was at least a 15-pitch AB, crowd whipped into a frenzy. Batter finally watched a tailing pitch that started out of the zone…and ended up well out of the zone…and the ump got caught up in the moment and rung him up. Chaos ensues. Ump throws the batter, manager and first base coaches out. Equipment strewn all over the field, probably a half hour before another pitch was thrown…and we’re drinking dollar beer the whole time.
