🏀 Avery Johnson hired

Good Lord, this is a great hire. The man has coached in the NBA. I'm as happy as a clam.

Alabama is relevant in basketball now. Imagine:

"Most of the time, in the NBA, we look for this, this, and this. You have it. I can work with you, just like I did with so-and-so, and you'll be ready."

Does that not sound appealing? And don't tell me an NBA coach doesn't know the game. I'll reiterate. This is a great hire.

+1

Here is a condensed documentary on him, worth a watch @ 14 mins. I haven't found the full length version yet.

@TerryP, great video of Coach Johnson. Thanks for sharing that with us. I have no doubts that he can recruit after watching that video.

I told my wife we may have just hired a Coach Saban caliber coach for our BB program.

To answer TerryP's question, Cal sucked in the NBA. Rick Pitino too. And it isn't looking so hot for Brad Stevens right now either

Going a bit further now that I've got a minute.

What does that tell you about any of those coaches in college? Nothing, really. Cal, happened to coach with the Nets as well.

I'm wondering if you're "hold back," maybe a better word is apprehension, is based solely on his time with the Nets? Do we discount his NBA Coach of the Year award? Or, do we accept that but with caveats? If so, what?

How much credit, or criticism, is deserved with using the job with the Nets? It certainly doesn't fit Cal, right?

Hell, I'm working through this myself. I've a lot of thoughts...nothing firm, but certainly nothing skeptical.

Avery's energy will ignite the Bama fans. I believe the lack of enthusiasm was Grant's downfall (mostly).

On another note, his press conferences are pretty amusing and similar to Saban if he is pissed off.

I give this move my "Big Shot Bob" seal of approval.

I agree about his enthusiasm. We didn't need another stone-faced coach. I just hope he recruits well. He definitely has selling points.

I didn't know that about his PCs. Looking forward to one, I think.

I agree with you 100%.

I just feel like his name came out of the blue. I think guys like Howland and Barnes are safer hires, but what do I know? They're known commodities in college where Johnson isn't. Avery Johnson could definitely be better than both. One thing I like is that he has a big personality. He'll get people excited about the program again.

Here's where this story gets interesting.

I could go on a diatribe now, but I can't afford the time at this minute.

It's my understanding that we didn't contact Avery; he contacted us. Much like Mel Tucker in football, he fell in our lap.

Now, before I can go any further (got a little shit to do) why did we attract his attention?

I'll be back with this as soon as I can...

Because of $$$??

Avery Johnson's net worth is listed at $20 million, so I doubt $$$ attracted him. I think he wanted back in the game and we had an opening. With him being from the South, what better place to be?

However this is along the lines I was thinking with Avery choosing Alabama.

"Playing off Alabama football coach Nick Saban, Bayless said Johnson can be "Avery Saban" and turn the Crimson Tide into a national power in men's basketball.

"I think that Avery is going to surprise, if not shock, some people with the job he does at Alabama, the football school," Bayless said. "He has high charisma. He is a lightning rod and I think it will serve him well in recruiting young men."
