Glen Guilbeau and Maurice Patton probably have whiplash today from moving Alabama up to #1 and #2 respectively. They were unapologetic in their ranking Alabama 16 and 18 last week.
It would be nice if we got the homer vote. Segrest and Johnson both have us #2 and OU #1. An argument could be made that we should be #1 and that argument should not be needed with home state writers, when 2 out of 3 Florida writers pick Alabama #1. OU's hometown writers had them 1st.
While Guilbeau did an about face, you don't have to stray far to see anti-saban sentiment in Louisiana. Randy Rosetta of the Baton Rouge Advocate has Alabama ranked 4th. He must not have watched the game.
Bob Hammond from the Laramie Boomerang has Alabama 4th as well.
To me, the question that you have to ask after 5 games, is who has done the most? Alabama has beaten two top 10 teams on the road, and a home win over a solid Tulane team. They have a win on the road in the SEC at Arkansas, and a mid-major. I like OU, but blowout wins over Cincinnati, Chattanooga, and a terrible Washington team, are not in the same league as Alabama's wins. A 35-10 win at home over 24th ranked TCU hardly compares to what Alabama did in Athens Saturday night.
Based on comparing the body of work, Alabama should be #1.
Now I know that some of you will spout the mantra "it does not matter" and cite some Saban quote, but it does matter to fans and national perception - even recruiting...even if it shouldn't matter to the team itself. OU has losers row of creampuffs between them and the Big 12 title game. Texas is the only team that might beat them, and that is unlikely. If our win over UGA could not catapult us, I question if beating LSU in Baton Rouge will. It may take a head to head game to do it.
Now lets whip UK.
