🏈 Any inside info on Carpenter's absence?

what i read was he (Marquis) was at practice with a wrap on his thumb. maybe im wrong but hasnt his hand been wrapped for a few weeks?

yeah, supposedly injured last week per Gentry

-- Cornerback Marquis Johnson is wearing a cast to support a thumb injury sustained before the team broke for the holidays. Johnson was able to practice "some" today, said Saban, who added, "He should be able to play in the game."

If Saban's right, that's a big relief. It'd sure be horrible to have the whole team come down with something...

"We're taking the precautions," Saban said, "but I don't think this is the same kind of contagious-type stuff that we had before. But we're certainly taking the precautions because we don't want to continue to get guys sick on the team.
"This may be more the weather, in and out, that type of thing. We don't feel like we have an issue right now, and we're hopeful that we won't have one in the future."

I talked to the father of one of our DB's yesterday. Of course practice came up and stories starting flying back and forth.

Here's why I mention that. The son, along with a few others in our back eight, have been cautioned on more than one occasion that they need to hold back the force they are hitting with. Understand, this is "thud" contact and Saban's dialing them back.

Here's your told you so statement about this game.

We are going to see a few receivers for Texas rocked...

Cujo!!!!!! Down boy.

< Big ole' grin... >

I sure hope so. If we set the tone early with extreme violence...that could be a very (gulp) good thing.

A friend of mine mentioned the number of LSU players that went down in our game. As he put it, "I don;t think anyone's ever acused texas of being a physically dominating team." (I left your typo's in B  )

I had mentioned seeing UF have a half of a dozen injured sometime in that game.

What's your call? Over/under on the number of TX players that require a "breather?"

Six?

I had a vision that Rolando was spying McCoy when McCoy got loose and Ro had about 5 yards worth of steam on him knocking him back 5 yards! Man that would be awesome!

Replace RoMac with Anders and it would be a prophetic vision. From what I understand we are taking about the same defensive approach as we did with Florida.

Pocket containment and influence.

It's amazing how many times I saw that very same thing during games this season. At first, I just felt lucky that it wasn't our boys going down with injuries. As the season progressed, there was a definite pattern. Then I recalled CNS's first press conference when he talked about how physical he wanted his teams to be at Alabama. It seems his vision is coming to fruition. If Marquis' injury is any indication of their intended ferocity, I'd have to go with 6+. :elephant: :a:

Just as an anecdotal story about this philosophy.

My HS Sr. year we hit a lot in Summer camp. Over about a four day period we lost a starting TE and a starting OLB to broken collar bones and had a FB and DT suffer concussions from all the hard hits.

Our coaches decided at that point to dial things back and we went to something like the 'thud' rules Saban has in place - only moreso. The last week of camp and the week of the first game we practiced in helmets, tee-shirts, and shorts. NO contact at all.

On the opening kickoff of the first game we were so pent-up looking for contact we were caged animals. By the end of the first quarter, our opponents had abject fear in their eyes.

On one play, the other team ran an option play and our OLB forgot which back was his responsibility. Having been told by our coaches that if you do not know who to hit, hit the guy nearest you with all you have. So, while the ball was given to a dive back, this LBer hit the unsuspecting pitch man so hard you could later see on tape players heads turn and look to see what the heck happened over there.

I suspect every time the rest of the game one of their backs was the pitch man on that option play he had one eye on the ball and another on that LBer.

Sometime, withholding contact only makes you crave it more.
