This is purely my own opinion but maybe he has intentionally hurt his stock so that he could go lower and get picked up by a better team. I know he will loose a lot of money in doing so but he will still be making way more money than he or any football player is worth. If I were in his situation I would definitely be thinking about it...do I go to Detroit and suck year after year or do i give up a couple of million (but still make mega millions) over 5 years but go to a decent/good team who has a shot at the playoffs and the superbowl? If winning and competing are important enough...what would you do?

Absurd.

Had I told you a week ago that he was gonna leave the combine and fall to a possible second round pick you would have said the same thing.

I didnt mean to suggest that was the sole reason he did it. I just like coming up with other reasons outside of the norm to ponder and discuss.

If he has been getting (Bad) advice from agents, family, etc then whos to say they couldn't have planted the seed to sabotage him self.

From a possible #1 overall to the second round? Ouch...

2nd round, that ain't gonna happen.

if you are referring to my earlier post, Detroit has TWO 1st round picks.

Ah, that makes more sense. Like most folks, I didn't pay much attention to Detroit this yar, except to see if they could become the true definition of EPIC FAIL. :)

I think you might be looking at pro football with your college football glasses on.

Yeah man that's nonsense.

It may be absurd nonsense!!!

But it helps me try to figure out this whole situation. Here's a kid that has had no problems(that I've heard of anyway) for three years. He's shown good character, caused no trouble, been hard working and a leader for all that time. Now, all of a sudden (in the past two months) he's become slow, fat, lazy, immature, making poor decisions and seems to not care about his future.

Maybe some of you know more about him and whats gone on behind the scenes and off the field. It just doesn't add up or make sense to me that he has forgoten what it takes to be successful and go to the NFL in two months time.

First, remove the concept that he was a 'hard worker' from your equation, because that simply is not reality. I harken back to the comments captured by the camera and mic in the special done last (or was it two ago) Spring where Saban said to Smith (paraphrased) "You do not realize how good you could be if you did the right things all the time. You only work hard when you have to.'

Second, remove the concept that he has been a 'leader' because that too is not reality. (And, here, I am not being critical because not everyone is a 'leader' in either the vocal perspective. You cannot blame someone for 'not being' what they are not. Still, you can find fault in the fact he did not lead by 'example' because anyone - especially a star player, can do that.)

Third, remove the concept that he has 'caused no trouble' for three years because that too does not match reality. See his shaddy behavior and lack of cooperation that lead to his suspension from the team the week of the Sugar Bowl. Granted, that was an initial glimpse, but he has done little in the last six weeks to indicate those events were an outlier and not the norm going forward.

Now, when you remove those three things from your baseline opinion, I think you might not be so surprised by the more recent and public actions and statements by Smith.

IF Smith thinks this is a good way to fall in the draft to possibly latch on with a better team, then God Bless him. Knowing that he has for the better part of ten years had the notion that he would maximize his earnings potential by playing LT belies that former idea. In my opinion.

I must admit that his actions for the last couple of months have been puzzling to say the least. Gator I see your points and points well taken. I find it hard to believe that a player would purposely blow a chance to be among the top 2 taken in the draft. He could pull an Eli Manning and refuse to go to a certain team and make them trade his rights elsewhere.

Pulling the Eli stunt would have been a better option. But I am not sure Andre had the leverage Eli had.

Papa Manning, who is a pretty wealthy individual on his own, and, of course, brother Peyton could have subsidized Eli with a few hundred thousand had Eli's bet been called by the Chargers and he truly sat out for a year. Andre does not have that type sponsorship if the team that drafted him was unwilling or unable to make a trade for his rights. (But you have to believe such a deal would get done - the question would be if it was done in time for Andre to practice and make a contribution to his new team this year.)

What we might be seeing here is the NFL version of 'he is fat and lazy and too slow' that college fans affix to a recruit when the prospect spurns a scholarship offer to that fan's favorite school. :D Except this time it might be true. :?
