🏈 🏈 Alabama's Fall Camp~2021

I really liked the ability to have Kendall Randolph at TE and be a 6th OL in lots of formations. Maybe a frosh can win the RT job?
The progression of Latu at tight end frees up Randolph and brings a defensive mentality to the TE position. Yesterday it was Randolph, Latham, and George (who has really "come into shape" over the last season—he really looks like a different.)

I know the staff is very high on Latham so if he ends up running with the 2's we'll see plenty of talented depth on that side.

Good call on Latu - I expect good things from him. Even having the flexibility to use Randolph as a 6th OL on occasion would be nice.

Is Latham running #2 at RT, and Damien George #3? George is a massive human - glad he's in better shape.

Good to see George pushing for playing time. I know a lot were worried about his ranking and possible offer just to get Zach Evans to Tuscaloosa.

He was yesterday and has in several practices this fall. A few days ago George was working alongside Jaeden Roberts. Imagine that right side of the line: two guys both around 6'6" and both pushing 340-345lbs.

About a week has passed since Alabama football opened preseason practice.

Reporters have had a chance to view three 15-minute sessions over that span, the third of which was Thursday, the first day outside in pads.

Here are 10 observations and takeaways from the first week:

Evan Neal and Bryce Young look good

Offensive tackle Evan Neal and quarterback Bryce Young look good. Really good. Both players have all the fundamentals to be elite this season. They each have great mechanics and pass the eye test. For an entirely new-look offense, having a stud quarterback and left tackle is a good place to start.

Kool-Aid McKinstry is making a name for himself

There are plenty of Alabama folks drinking the Kool-Aid. Freshman cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry has received no shortage of praise from coaches and teammates during the first week of camp. Coachable, smart, disciplined, athletic and physical are some of the words they have used to describe him. Especially physical. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding said if they can get all that to be consistent, “he’s going to be a really good player.” How this translates to the way Alabama uses him this year remains to be seen.

Cameron Latu ‘very physical’

Speaking of physical, that label fits tight end Cameron Latu. During one drill, he demonstrated impressive pop when he lowered his shoulder into a person holding a dummy. Safety Jordan Battle, who has to defend him often, said Latu is “very physical and very,

very fast.”

Players are mostly healthy

Alabama is fairly healthy overall. Defensive lineman LaBryan Ray has not been practicing because of what coach

Nick Saban termed a “pretty significant groin injury.” Fellow defensive lineman

Braylen Ingraham also has not been seen practicing. Inside linebacker

Shane Lee was not spotted at practice Thursday.

D-line coach Freddie Roach is intense

One of the most fun things to watch at practice is a coach who gets fired up. Sometimes that’s frustration, but there are some coaches who just love to be intense. Defensive line coach Freddie Roach is one of those. You can hear him from about anywhere on the practice field. Defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis said Roach “brings a lot of energy.” Roach’s intensity and enthusiasm make you want to throw on some shoulder pads and jump in line for the drill.

Will Anderson Jr. is one to watch

Sophomore edge defender Will Anderson Jr. is just fun to watch on a football field, even a practice field. Expect

him to build on a strong first year.

Traeshon Holden’s role is TBD

I’m curious to see how Alabama uses receiver Traeshon Holden. Much of the conversation surrounding the receivers is about John Metchie III and transfer Jameson Williams, and rightfully so, but Holden could find a nice role on this offense. He’s connected well with Young in a few drills, one of which was a deep ball on a go-route that Holden caught cleanly over the shoulder, with nice ball placement from Young, too. Metchie said Holden has “grown tremendously” playbook-wise heading into his sophomore season. Depending on how he progresses, Holden as a big-body receiver could be potent with Bill O’Brien calling the plays.

King Mwikuta isn’t transferring?

Entering the transfer portal doesn’t mean goodbye, necessarily. Outside linebacker King Mwikuta entered his name in the portal in June, but he’s been practicing with Alabama over the past week.

Brian Robinson will run through people

It’s only fitting that the train often

sounds in the background while Brian Robinson practices. The Tuscaloosa native said he’s not really a hurdler like his predecessor, Najee Harris. “More than likely,” Robinson said, “it will be probably lowering the shoulder or dropping my pads.” Robinson could be more than a bruiser, though. Linebacker Christian Harris, who gets to face him in practice, said Robinson has developed a lot in the passing game with his routes and catching ability.

O-line is taking shape

We’ve gotten some glimpses of what the offensive line might look like based on who is running with who in drills. The first group is (left to right) Neal, Javion Cohen, Chris Owens,Emil Ekiyor Jr., and Kendall Randolph. Five-star freshman tackle J.C. Latham appears to be running with the second group at right tackle. Much can change before now and the start of the season. It’s early in camp and Alabama will surely mix and match to find the right fit. The coaches rep their offensive linemen in multiple positions so they can be prepared for all situations, especially when injuries strike and force O-linemen to be shuffled.

I think Holden is going to find a way onto the field... I'm thinking he eventually turns into that Kevin Norwood type that is dependable and consistent. Obviously the WR's are much deeper with talent than back in the Norwood & Mays days, but he's a good dark horse to have a great career.

Saw this from the rant..

quote

Bryce had 3 tds, and 1 int. 8yd td to Jojo, 13yd td to Latu, 20yd td to sanders in a 2 min situation. T Arnold had the int on Bryce. Jahquez Robinson picked off milroe. Tyson had a 60 yd td to Jones-bell. Tyson Almost led the second team offense to score in a 2 min situation but Story forced a fumble at the 2 yd line.

Offensive line struggled today with Neal and Owen's not participating(don't think its anything serious)each qb was sacked at least 5 times. To'oto'o and Harris was first team ilb and had a really strong day

That looks like a synopsis of Zenitz's report from On3.

Alabama held the first of its two preseason scrimmages Saturday. While the scrimmage was closed to the public and media, here are some tidbits that sources shared with On3:

— One of the positive developments of the day was that former five-star running back Trey Sanders, who has been working back from injuries suffered in a car accident last year, had a few standout moments. One was a touchdown catch from new starting quarterback Bryce Young. Sanders also broke a run of about 30 yards at one point.

— The Alabama coaching staff is optimistic about the defense and this scrimmage won’t change that. As was the case during the Crimson Tide’s two closed scrimmages in the spring, the first-team defense “looked great” Saturday. As during the spring scrimmages, outside linebackers Will Anderson and Chris Allen consistently caused issues for Alabama offensive linemen.

— Young and tight end Cameron Latu continue to build a nice connection. After combining for touchdown passes in each of the Tide’s spring scrimmages as well as the team’s spring game, they combined for another TD on Saturday.

— Backup quarterback Paul Tyson had a touchdown pass of about 60 yards to second-year wide receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell and finished without any interceptions.

— Young was intercepted at one point by freshman cornerback Terrion Arnold. Redshirt freshman cornerback Jacquez Robinson also had an interception. His came off of freshman quarterback Jalen Milroe.

— Highly ranked freshman wide receiver JoJo Earle, who enrolled this summer, flashed some and connected with Young for a touchdown early in the scrimmage.

And of course, @TerryP - Any word on the scrimmage today? I suppose no news is good news... Avoid injuries at all cost!
Nothing discouraging. Things are falling together about the way we thought they would with an exception or two. IE: I'm not convinced the right tackle spot is settled but I believe the other 10 on offense are pretty set.

I don't think it's possible to look at the defense and say "here's the starting groups" because there's so much talent and depth. They're up to rotating nine at times on the defensive line leaving me wondering who are those first three or four lineman. With a guy like Branch coming off the bench it tells the story of the secondary: talent and depth again.

I remember talking about the linebackers two years ago and saying "we're asking them to do things normally seen from RS sophomore's, or juniors. We'll see what we expected two years ago this fall.

Did you have something/someone particular in mind?

Great update! Always curious about that RT position, as well as the RB rotation. With a note about Sanders being back in the mix last week, I'd be interested to see where he and the others are falling in line.

Ok here we go.......I report and you decide...

quote:

The Truth… The defense was expected to dominate and then Neal and Owens sat out with sore knee. Then Randolph went down with sore ankle. It was very hot……Will Anderson, Chris Allen and Harris were dominating.
Branch, Wheaton,Hellams also got minor injuries and came out.
The day started out one offense against two defense then two offense against 1 defense. Then they did 8 third and long plays 1 defense against 1 offense and so on. They also put ball at 20 and did 2 minute drill.
Some appox stats..Bryce was 12 for 29 for 150 yards. He had 3 TD and 1 INT. Paul was 14-28 for 190 yards with 1 TD and No INT. Milroe and Barker Neither had TD, Milroe had 1 INT by Robinson.
Trey Saunders had a great day rushing and caught a TD pass. Brian Robinson ran really hard!! Latu had nice TD catch from 15 yard line. Jones-Bell caught 55 yard TD pass. Brooks had some good catches. Baker made some plays. Williams made a few catches. Williams was open a few times deep.
Bryce had 2 chances in 2 minute and scored once capped off with 20 yard pass to Trey S. Twos led by Tyson had one chance in 2 minute and drove to 2 yard line and had fumble with hit of the day by Story on a blitz. Players said he blindsided RB.
Defense dominated third down plays. 1 defense stopped 1 offense on all 8 attempts. 2 offense was 3-8.
With Neal, Owens and Randolph out. They moved OL a lot. Dalcourt was first team center. Seth was second team center. Tackles were Latham, Kight, George, T Brockermeyer. Guards were Cohen, Ekiyor, Brown, Quick, Bowles.
DL dominated with some great tackles by Eboigbe, Mathis, and Dale.
Some new faces in secondary played well. Story had great day. Koolaid played good. Khyree Jackson played well. Jackson will take your head off. Battle, Jobe and Armour-Davis played well. Branch played good until hurt.
The truth… Defense dominated but offense had some good plays and finished strong in 2 minute drill.

12 of 29 150 yards - not completion percentage desired. Same with Tyson 14-28. No context so these numbers are probably misleading or they may be running for their life which is still a problem.

Early in the fall camp but sounds like at a high level we are where we expected we would be.
