From BOL
Hey guys, real Teddy here, not my evil twin. Lol. Just wanted to post my thoughts and get some feedback.
As I've said before I know several people who are very much in the know about the program. I wish I could give one name specifically, but thread would be zapped. All of the "info" I'll post has been posted elsewhere so I'm not breaking any ground. I'm really just wanting a civil discussion about our QB position.
A few facts:
-Cornwell had a chance to take the job at the end of Spring and didn't get it done. Doesn't sound like he's made any more progress this summer.
-A certain offensive coach doesn't think we can win an SEC title with Coker. Another offensive coach wants to take our lumps this year with BB and play for 2016. I could give a quote but this is a family website.
-The team seems to be behind Coker at this point. I like Coker. I'm friends with his cousin. So I'm not trying to be critical of him.
The Case For Coker: All the tools. Senior. If no separation among the QB's, go with the senior. I saw things in the spring game I really liked. But then in the second half, it all went flat.
The Case For Cornwell: Almost won it in April. That's gotta go for something. Maybe he performs well in the scrimmages and earns the trust of the players and coaches. We know he was highly regarded coming out of high school.
The Case For Morris: Maybe becoming a GMAC or JPW? With all the other talent on the team, I'd take that all day long.
The Case For Bateman:..........
The Case For Barnett: HERE'S where it gets interesting. Travis made a very huge point in his article. He stated that BB is the most natural at the position of any QB on the roster. Talked about keeping his eyes down field while rolling out. Yes he's a frosh who has been here since January. But here's where I make my point...
Blake Sims was the equivalent of BB under KIFFIN'S system. He was a Kiffin freshman. Kiffin held his hand all year long and Blake broke tons of records. Coker and the others are sophomores in Kiffin's system. Yet BB seems to be the one everyone notices. He's the most natural. He's got all the physical tools. He's already with George Whitfield. He's simply a special kid.
I've played in college. I've been on a team where the locker room was divided over who the QB should be. Did it cause team issues? No. Once the ball is snapped you go play. However, I didn't play SEC so I can't speak to that. If the majority of the team is behind Coker, that's huge and I can assure you Saban looks at that heavily. When you're in that huddle, and the QB is the only one allowed to speak, everything goes 1,000 times smoother when you believe in the guy calling the plays. Now, what happens when/if you lose a game you should have won but the QB throws 3 pics? That's Coker's biggest issue...consistency. You can most definitely lose your team when they're doing their job but the QB can't do his.
So let's say we lose to UGA and the QB play has been very iffy. Go back to certain coaches feeling we can't win with the older guys. When do you start to look at 2016? We'll lose Robinson, Reed, Allen, Ragland, Henry and Drake. But we will still be so disgustingly loaded that with a good QB we probably win another title. If you know where your future at QB is, when do you decide to get him ready for next year...or even a magical run like Tom Brady did winning the Super Bowl as a rookie. I think the biggest question for the staff, IF we don't get good QB play from the upperclassmen, is when do you pull the trigger on the future. Fascinating situation IMO. Thoughts? RTR.
